While The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth previews don’t begin in earnest until May 30, we’ve already seen plenty of exciting cards from the set, from Commander staples to colour-sifted classics. Here are some of the best so far.

The One Ring

The One Ring will be a Commander staple for years to come, providing an indestructible stream of cards for life. And it’s dripping with flavour; indestructible, protects its owner, and provides knowledge at a great cost. Add in the gorgeous variants, including the serialised 1/1 version, and you’ve got one of the coolest cards ever printed.

“Rings of Power” Sol Rings

Sol Ring is one of the most iconic cards of all time, and an auto-include in any Commander deck. These special serialised versions depict the Rings of Power with different artwork for those given to mortal-men, Dwarves and Elves, and certainly rule them all.

Frodo, Sauron’s Bane

Frodo, Sauron’s Bane is a story on a card, showing the halfling becoming a scout as his journey begins, before turning to a rogue with the power to destroy his enemy, powered by black mana to show the impact the Ring is having on him. And it’s powerful too, reminiscent of Figure of Destiny and friends.

Reprieve

Remand was one of the strongest tempo cards in the game. This set brings with it Reprieve, an identical but colour-shifted version that could be a game changer in aggressive white desks in older formats.

Tom Bombadil

The intriguing bard is not only perfect as a five-colour, sagas-matter commander, but heavily implies that sagas will be in the set – what a perfect way to help capture the fathomless lore of Tolkien, from the Hobbit to The Silmarillion.
