Twilight Masquerade Setlist: What's New in Scarlet & Violet

Twilight Masquerade Setlist: What's New in Scarlet & Violet

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 23rd Apr 2024

To say Disney Lorcana has taken the TCG world by storm would be an understatement. No other game since Yu-Gi-Oh! debuted over 25 years ago has a game generated so much hype and provided a real challenge to the status quo of the genre.

The brand new set from Pokemon, Twilight Masquerade, is just around the corner and we are going to take a look at what we know so far. It seems like only yesterday that the first Scarlet and Violet set was being released, but here we are at the 6th main expansion already! There is a lot to love about Scarlet and Violet Twilight Masquerade as we are introduced to loads of brand new Pokemon.

According to Pokemon’s official set description, Twilight Masquerade is a trip to the land of Kitakami, where people and Pokemon live harmoniously with nature. We will “uncover the mystery of the masked legendary Pokemon Ogerpon” and “team up with more newly discovered Pokemon, like Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex and Sinistcha ex”. It also gives us a sneak peek into some of the Tera ex’s that are coming, including Greninja, Dragapult and Magcargo, as well as some brand new ACE SPECS.

We don’t have long to wait for this set, as the official release date is May 24th, with prerelease events taking place from May 11th. So, without further ado, let’s put on our favourite masks and dive into Twilight Masquerade!

Dive into Twilight Masquerade

As we said, Twilight Masquerade is already the 6th main expansion in the Scarlet and Violet series and it brings with it tons of never before seen Pokemon. The set is based around The Teal Mask, which is the first expansion of the Scarlet and Violet video games. If you have played that part of the game then I’m sure you will be familiar with all of the new Pokemon that are coming and are probably as excited for them as I am! Most of the Pokemon featured in Pokemon’s official release information are brand new Pokemon, first introduced in the Teal Mask, so have never been seen before in the TCG.

As well as 4 different versions of Ogerpon, there are other superb new Pokemon coming, including Fezandipiti, Okidogi and Munkidori as well as loads of new trainers.

Key Features of the Set

Pokemon have been kind enough to let us know some details of the set. There will be 167 cards before any secret rares, of which we expect there to be at least 50, meaning Twilight Masquerade will likely be at least 200 cards in total. This is not uncommon though, as all illustration rares, special illustration rares, ultra rares and hyper rares count as secret rares.

We will be treated to 6 new ACE SPEC cards, which have been a massive hit since their return in Temporal Forces. These powerful trainer and energy cards are so good, you are limited to 1 copy of 1 ACE SPEC per deck. Alongside these we are getting 7 new standard Pokemon ex cards and 7 new Tera Pokemon ex cards. The regular ex’s include Bloodmoon Ursaluna, Sinistcha, Scream Tail and Iron Thorns as well as 3 others which have not been revealed yet. The Tera ex’s are the 4 versions of Ogerpon (Teal Mask, Hearthflame Mask, Wellspring Mask, Cornerstone Mask) alongside Magcargo, Dragapult and Greninja. Magcargo’s Tera type is to be Fire, Dragapult will be Dragon and Greninja will be Fighting type.

Twilight Masquerade is packed full of chase cards as well. There will be 21 illustration rare Pokemon, 11 special illustration rare Pokemon and Supporters and 6 gold hyper rares. On top of all this goodness, there are over 30 trainer cards in the set, which is excellent for all you deck builders and players out there.

Spotlight on New Pokemon

Pokemon have teased us with some of the new and never before seen Pokemon in the TCG, including the 4 versions of Ogerpon ex. These look amazing and we have seen previews of these cards already. Each one has 210HP and is a Basic Pokemon. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex (grass type) has a fantastic ability that lets you attach a grass energy from your hand to that Ogerpon and then draw a card. That is really powerful and can help get you out of a bind! Its attack requires 3 grass energy and does 30 damage plus 30 more for each energy attached to both active Pokemon. Being able to attach energy with its ability just makes its attack even more powerful!

Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex has 2 attacks, the first costing 1 fire and 2 colourless and does 20 damage for each damage counter on Ogerpon. You could use Magma Basin to power this up which also puts 20 damage on the card it accelerates the fire energy to, therefore damaging Ogerpon. Its second attack costs 3 fire energy and does 140 damage plus 140 more if the opponent's Pokemon is an evolution Pokemon. So that is hitting a huge 280 damage against evolved Pokemon. That is enough to knock out loads of evolved ex’s, including Pidgeot ex. The only drawback here is that you have to discard all energy from Ogerpon.

Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex is a water type Tera ex Pokemon and it also has 2 attacks. The first costs just a single colourless energy and does 20 damage, however your opponent's active Pokemon cannot retreat during their next turn. Its second attack costs a water and 2 colourless energy and does 100 damage. However, you also have the choice of shuffling 3 energy from Ogerpon back into your deck and if you do that, the attack also does 120 damage to 1 of your opponents benched Pokemon. This can be excellent for taking out a support Pokemon, like Bibarel, or finishing off a damaged attacker. However, Manaphy is a pretty hard counter against that and will stop any damage going onto their benched Pokemon.

Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon ex is a fighting type Pokemon with a superb defensive ability. It reads, “prevent all damage from attacks done to this Pokemon by your opponents Pokemon that have an ability”. That is really powerful in today’s game, where lots of Pokemon have abilities. Its attack costs 1 fighting and 2 colourless energy and is a Shred attack which does 140 damage and isn’t affected by weakness, resistance or any effects on your opponent's Pokemon. This means it can hit cards like Mimikyu, which ex Pokemon can normally not damage. This is a fantastic card that is sure to see some play as a good defensive piece in some decks.

Pokemon have also shown us a new trainer card called Ogre’s Mask which looks like it could allow a tool box type deck to be built using all of the Ogerpons. It is an item card which allows you to switch an Ogerpon ex from your discard pile with one of your Ogerpon ex in play. Any attached cards, damage counters and effects stay in play. This can be great for getting that Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon out to deal with a Mimikyu or switching types to make sure you hit for weakness. This card has lots of utility and it will be interesting to see how Ogerpon Box decks will be built.
