Even after such a long time, Yu-Gi-Oh! is still among the most popular games in the world with over 25 billion cards sold. Of course, the amount of cards sold each year does not always matter as much as the number of duellist actually playing the game and how many of them you may be able to meet at local and national events. In other words, how is the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card community?
Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game is among the most long-lived TCG still played considering that it celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
Well, anyone playing this amazing TCG will likely say that there are still a lot of players in love with it even after 25 years. And there is no better way to prove their words than pointing out that Yu-Gi-Oh! broke this year not one but two Guinness World Record during the 10th Yu-Gi-Oh! Champion Series Japan tournament held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Centre on the 28th and 29th of April 2024. With 7,443 Duellists, this event set both the record for the most entrants in a TCG tournament and also the one with the largest number of people playing against each other in the same venue at once.
As impressive as it can be, YCSJ TOKYO 2024 is not the first Yu-Gi-Oh! event that enters into the Guinness World Record. The previous record was in fact held by the 100th Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series held in Long Beach, California in March 2012 where 4,364 duellists competed against each other by summoning monsters and activating Spell and Trap cards to be crowned as the King of Games.
How the largest trading card tournament was like?
That massive amount of players joining 10th Yu-Gi-Oh! Champion Series Japan tournament in April all faced a impressive challenge, worth of being added to any of the Yu-Gi-OH! story arcs.
To start, all Duellists were randomly matched with an opponent and competed in the tournament’s first round. The losers were eliminated immediately while the winners of the first round progressed to the second round, repeating the process for a total of 16 rounds. This means that through the tournament, the finalists had to play for as long as 4h considering that each duel was allocated a time limit of 25 minutes. Of course, some of these matches ended in less than 5 minute in a very typical Yu-Gi-Oh! way.
At the end of this long marathon, Yutaro Takahashi was the last duellist standing out of the 7,443 competitors that entered the tournament. His deck, built on the Voiceless Voice archetype, was able to beat a variety of different decks including the ones used by the runner-up that included Tenpai Dragon, Melodious and Salamangreat. If you are interested in the statistics and to get more details on the decks used at the tournament, you can check the official tournament link.
The prizes for ranking in the 1st place included an amazing Trophy, a "Destruction Dragon Gandra" Special Card in Stainless Steel and FULL COMPLETE SET of Infinite Forbidden. After being rightfully crowned as the winner, however, Yutaro Takahashi commented on his success with a high level of humbleness saying “I am happy to be a champion! It was thanks to the practice with my friends whom I met through ‘Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG.’ I will do my best to win the next event as well!”.
Guinness officials were also ready to mark the end of the event with a special ceremony in which they presented Konami with the two Record breaking certificates. Konami, on their end, shared the celebration for the Guinness World Records with all the players that attended in the tournament by giving each of the Duellist a limited-edition card to commemorate the day. This card looks really stunning and it is one-of-a-kind thus it is expected to be quite desirable on the secondary market in the future considering also the fact that there will always be just over 7000 copied of it.
What the next for Yu-Gi-Oh! and its competitive Gameplay?
The number of players that participated in the event in Japan and the history of similar large events that characterizes this TGC can only be considered a clear testimony of how strong is the Community and how Yu-Gi-Oh! is still one of the most TCG played globally.
Shunsuke Kazama, the voice of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime protagonist Yugi, also shared the same feelings in the message he sent to the Players attending the record-breaking tournament: “Congratulations to all the duellists for being recognized by Guinness World Records. I believe that this record was only possible due to the cooperation and strength of bonds between each and every duellist. As a result, I think the Yu-Gi-Oh! card games will deepen the unity and bond between duellists, and an even more amazing world awaits. I believe that your passion will continue to be passed on to us for many years to come and will become a road to all of us duellists. Dear duellists, please continue to keep your pride in your heart and keep pushing forward.”
This is not the only very positive message shared during and after the event by key figure in the hobby, Konami officials and, of course, by a lot of players around the world. The level of community and friendship shared by everyone involved in this hobby at any level is really astonishing and even more impressive, if we think that this record-breaking event happened on the year Yu-Gi-Oh! also celebrates its 25th anniversary from the OCG first release on February the 4th ,1999. Although Yu-Gi-Oh! is not the oldest TCG, it managed to find its way into the hearts of one generation after the other and it is clear from the volume of cards sold every year, that this game is still very much one of the top three games played in the world.
Speaking of cards, Konami has been also working tirelessly to release a number of celebratory sets to pair with all the events scheduled for their year-long celebrations. The most recent one, the 25th-anniversary Rarity Collection II, follows-up on the impressive success of the first Rarity Collection that released at the end of 2023. In this new set, the size of the booster packs has been increased from 5 cards to 9 while pull rates have been boosted to make easier to find cards of higher rarity. In this case, statistics suggests that players should be able to find at least one Collector's Rare or Ultimate Rare every two booster packs that is an amazing opportunity for every collectors.
