The Red Army used massed PTRD anti-tank rifles to protect their infantry from enemy armour. While one anti-tank rifle was not necessarily particularly deadly, a dozen or more could be very effective; infantry flexibility and mobility allowed for flank shots in a way that anti-tank guns could not.
