As of 2026, there are more than 112 Charizard cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, spanning six major eras from the 1999 Base Set to the modern Mega Evolutions series. Charizard has actually appeared in more cards and sets than any other Pokémon other than Pikachu, becoming the hobby’s most recognisable chase card.

This guide walks through six distinct eras from the 1999 Base Set to the modern Mega Evolutions series to celebrate all Charizard cards from the rarest 1st Edition Holo Charizard (which PSA 10 sels for six figures) to the modern Special Illustration Rares and highlights the rarest, and most valuable cards Collectors should look for today.

The Original Charizard Cards — Base Set Era (1999–2002)

The Original Base Set counts some of the most valuable Pokémon cards ever printed including the very first Charizard (Holo Rare). This is widely considered the most iconic Pokémon card of all time with PSA 10 copies of this 1st Edition card regularly topping the six-figure prices. Collectors also chase the Shadowless variant of this Charizard card that is characterised by the absence of a black drop shadow to the right of the artwork box, non-bold HP font, and a lighter red background, indicating it is from an early "first print run" immediately following 1st Edition cards.

This first era also includes the Base Set 2 Charizard, a reprint with lower collector value, and the Expedition Base Set Charizard from 2002, an e-Reader card with wider borders that could be scanned using a Nintendo e-Reader for the Game Boy Advance. This variant is surprisingly valuable due the scarcity of PSA 10 cards as a result of print quality issue. Just as note, it is important to remind that Charizard did not appear in Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, or Neo sets.

The EX Era — Charizard Gets a Star (2002–2007)

The first Charizard card of the EX era was from FireRed & LeafGreen in 2004. The Burn Down attack on this Charizard ex was extremely effective in taking down any enemy by ignoring any defence and it synergised pretty well with the Double Rainbow Energy to help reducing the cost of this attack. Skyridge Charizard released in 2003 is also a pretty valuable card considering it is the only Colourless-type Charizard ever printed and it was made available in very limited amounts.

The crown jewel of the era is however the Gold Star Charizard from EX Dragon Frontiers, released in 2006. This card is particular for the era as it features a Shiny Charizard with its distinguished Black palette, and a dual typing to align to the Delta Species lore of the set. Most importantly, the 2006 EX Dragon Frontiers set had a low print run due to Pokémon TCG's losing some of its popularity at the time. As a result there are far less copies of this card compared to other notable ones from late 90s sets.

The XY Era — Mega Charizard and the Evolutions Reprint (2013–2017)

The XY Era introduced Generation VI Pokémon from the Kalos region, and the groundbreaking Mega Evolution mechanic. The most famous release of the era is definitely the 2016 Charizard as it was designed to faithfully recreate the Base Set artwork. This card gained progressively value in the last 10 years disregarding the large amount of copies printed and it is now a staple in any Charizard collection. 2016 was also the year when the Full Art M Charizard EX released in the Evolutions set.

The era also introduced the two alternative forms of Mega Charizard EX in the Flashfire set (2014): the black-blue Mega Charizard EX X and the more classic Mega Charizard EX Y (Flashfire, 2014).

Collectors and Players definitely favoured the first one over the more classical Y variant but both of these cards are pretty notable for the era.

The Sun & Moon Era — Charizard GX and Tag Team Power (2017–2019)

With the video games and the TCG moving away from the Mega Evolution mechanics, the Sun & Moon era was the time for Charizard to shine again in the competitive setting. The major release standouts of this period were the Burning Shadows Charizard GX (2017), and Tag Team card Reshiram & Charizard GX from the Unbroken Bonds set (2019), two very playable cards that quickly found their way into the meta game. Disregarding the competitive value, these cards are still quite popular among the collectors.

The era’s most iconic chase card, however, is the Shiny Charizard GX from the Hidden Fate set released in 2019 showcasing a gorgeous full-artwork. This card quickly became one of the most hyped cards in modern days Pokémon for players and collectors alike due to the playability of the card itself combined with the high popularity of Hidden Fates set.

The Sword & Shield Era - Charizard V and VMAX (2019–2022)

The Sword & Shield introduced V and VMAX mechanics in the TCG to match the Dynamax and Gigantamax forms used in the video games. These cards featured very powerful attack, extremely high HP (often over 300) but they were worth three prize cards when knocked out pushing the players to build their decks very strategically.

The two Charizard cards that stood out the most in this period came out in 2020. The first one is the Charizard VMAX from Darkness Ablaze while the second one is the Charizard VMAX Rainbow Rare from the Champions Path set. While Darkness Ablaze had a very large print run that made the first one largely available to all Players and Collectors, Champion Part was a special set with limited distribution. As a result, the Rainbow Rare version of this Charizard is among the most desirable modern Charizard cards for any Collector.

Overall, Charizard was a great protagonist of this era that interestingly concluded with the release of the Sword & Shield Ultra Premium Collection Charizard VMAX (2022). This premium product featured etched foil version of some of the most notable cards of the era including Charizard V, VMAX, and VSTAR plus a gorgeous playmat of a terrifying Gigantamax Charizard!

The Modern era Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolutions (2023 to Today)

The Scarlet and Violet and the Mega Evolutions have been one of the best Pokémon TCG eras for Charizard fans. The Obsidian Flames Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare released in 2023 is without any doubt the most desirable Charizard of the modern era considering its striking full-art holographic treatment, and gorgeous artwork of Akira Egawa.

One of the best aspect of this era for anyone in love with Charizard is the large amount of premium products featuring this Pokémon starting from the TCG Classic Charizard Deck Collection, the Charizard ex Super-Premium Collection and the Mega Charizard X ex Ultra Premium Collection that released just in 2026. In all cases, these collections featured amazing promo cards, exclusive accessories (including a Charizard card holder) and tons of Booster packs. The Mega Charizard X ex Ultra Premium Collection is likely one of the most sought after one with a newly illustrated Mega Charizard X ex card with a modern holo patterns and frame.
