Avatar: the Last Airbender was a cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 through to 2008. It told the story of Aang, and his friends (known by fans as “the Gaang”) in their quest to master the four elements and bring peace to their wartorn world. In the world of Avatar, people with power over the elements are known as benders, Airbenders control the winds, earthbenders can manipulate rock and stone, Waterbenders control the waves, and Firebenders are masters of flame. Avatar is the latest series to crossover with Magic: the Gathering, following on from Spider-Man, and Final Fantasy earlier this year.
It had a sequel series called The Legend of Korra which aired from 2012 to 2014. If this set ever gets a sequel we might see some Korra era cards, but for now it’s Aang, and the Gaang all the way.
Whether you’re planning a draft with your pals, or you just want to crack some packs and dive into the world of Avatar, play boosters are a great way of picking up some element bending cards.
If you’re looking for the rarest treasures that Avatar: the Last Airbender has to offer, like the Neon Ink Battle Pose cards, or the raised foil version of Avatar Aang, you’ll find them in Collector Booster packs.
Bundles give you everything you need to get a collection going. 9 play boosters, plenty of lands, a spindown to track your life, and a foil promo card with exclusive artwork. With one of these, you’ll be well on your way to challenging the firelord.
Choose your element, and get your hands on a prerelease promo and a special seeded booster pack themed around a character from the show, with an Avatar Prerelease pack. Build a deck and battle it out with a friend to determine who has a greater mastery over the elements.
Commander is the game’s most popular format, and this bundle provides several staple Commander cards, alongside a plethora of boosters, and a Click Wheel to keep track of your life.
If you’re looking to get playing straight away, Jumpstart boosters are a great option. Just slam two packs together and you have a ready to play 40 card deck. The packs inside are based around a variety of themes, from cabbages, to +1/+1 counters.
The rivalry between Aang and Zuko was one of the cornerstones of the Nickelodeon show. With this Beginner Box, you can recreate that feud, while also learning to play the game, and picking up some playmats.
There are two available Avatar scene boxes. Both contain several boosters, as well as a selection of cards that recreate an iconic moment from the show. You can add these cards to your deck, or spread them out in your binder to create an Avatar-tastic panorama.
Key Cards
When you’re breaking open your Avatar Boosters, here are some impactful cards to keep an eye out for…
It wouldn’t be an Avatar set without the man himself. Avatar Aang may just be the flashiest card from this crossover. This card acts as a payoff for utilising all of the new bending mechanics in the set, transforming into the avatar state, and granting you an incredible five mana discount on all of your spells. Thanks to the ability on its reverse side, Avatar Aang has five colours in his identity, making him the ideal commander for some multicolour mayhem.
Everyone knows about the Black Lotus, but the White Lotus Tile is also capable of producing plenty of mana. It adds X to your mana pool, where X is the number of creatures that you control that share a type. Whether it’s Vampires, Dragons, or Goblins, typal decks are always a blast, and this tile will ensure that you always have enough mana available to keep your board crowded with creatures.
Just because this ponytailed monk doesn’t have a name doesn’t mean they aren’t formidable. Monastery Swiftspear is one of the most impactful Aggro cards of all time, and Firebending Student is following closely in its footsteps. Firebending Student has prowess, but also grants extra mana whenever it attacks, thanks to its firebending skill. Because of this, you can sling even more spells and pump up their power up even higher.
This adorably fluffy fella is much more than meets the eye. Not only is it capable of earthbending, bringing a land to life to fight for you, but it also makes all of your creatures that can generate mana produce an additional green. This effect buffs up the land that the badgermole has just animated. 3/3 worth of stats for two mana is already great, particularly with this added upside.
There’s nothing in the game that feels better than casting cards for free. Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong lets you cheat out your best cards, once per turn, by allowing you to cast the top card of your deck for free after you’ve scryed or surveilled. Not only that card, but this card enables itself, thanks to its ability to scry 2 every single turn. If you’re the sort of player that loves charging out colossal creatures, or brewing big spells, you’ll want to gaze up into this Planetarium.
