Analysing All 5 Bilbo Cards From the MTG The Hobbit Crossover

Next up is the uncommon variant of Bilbo: Bilbo, Luckwearer. Just like his common counterpart, this Halfling Rogue is an adventure card, and a pretty tricksy one at that.

The Burglar's Plot spell, on the left side of this card allows you to switch control of two permanents that share a type. So if your opponent plays a massive creature, you can gain control of it in exchange for a 1/1 token. You can also nab their Sol Ring in exchange for a clue or a food token.

When Bilbo enters play as a creature, he's an unblockable 1/1 that draws and then discards a card whenever one of his attacks gets through. This can come in handy whether you plan on kitting Bilbo out with plenty of equipment to make his unblockable attacks more formidable, or you use his discard effect to load up your graveyard with valuable reanimation targets.

The final version of Bilbo to appear in the main set is Bilbo, Thief in the Night. Skipping over the regular rare rarity entierly, this pluckly robber is available as a Mythic Rare.

Bilbo, Thief in the Night makes any spell you cast from a zone other than your hand one mana cheaper. Bilbo Thief in the Night provides a discount on any cards cast from unusual places. You get mana off whether you're bringing your commander out of the Command Zone, casting an adventure spell from Exile, or playing a card with flashback from your Graveyard.

Bilbo's second effect capitalises on his first by allowing you to cast instants, sorceries, and artifacts from your graveyard whenever he attacks, applying his discount in the process.

There's actually some built in synergy between this card and Bilbo, Luckwearer. The Luckwearer can load up your graveyard, while this card brings everything that gets discarded back into play.

You can find this monogreen hobbit in an unexpected place: the Crack the Plates Scene Box. In Tales From Middle-Earth we saw a massive selection of Hobbits that cared about generating food tokens, Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator is no expection to that rule, as he creates a treasure token whenever a food would enter play under your control.

Humorously, since this version of Bilbo hasn't yet been recruited into Thorin's adventuring party, if you look at his type line, unlike every other card here, he's just a citizen and not a rogue yet.

If you're running a deck that cares about mass producing artifact tokens, or just a food deck that needs some mana acceleration, letting Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator in on your plans can help you turn games to your advantage.

Currently, Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer only shows up in MTG The Hobbit Collector Boosters, although in 2027, a new Battle of the Five Armies Co-op Kit will launch, featuring this card and a selection of other cards that are currently collector booster exclusives.

So just what can this final version of Bilbo offer? Well, he's colourshifted from blue to white, but he retains his focus on slipping past the opponent's blockers and fetching cards from the graveyard.

Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer can only be blocked by creatures with power 3 or greater, and whenever he damages an opponent (or a battle card they control), he puts a nonland permanent with mana value 3 or less from the graveyard onto the battlefield under its owner's control.

This variant of Bilbo works best in go-wide decks that are stuffed full of small creatures. Bilbo can keep the momentum of your attacks going by repeatedly reviving any creatures that fall along the way.

It's hard to keep a determined Hobbit down, and no amount of blockers or removal spells can keep Bilbo the Burglar from sneaking through for some damage and some card draw.
