Now that the festive season is here, let’s talk about some board games that make for great gifts. We’ve gone for a broad selection here. Sometimes you want to give a game that everyone can cozy up around the fire, and play cooperatively. Sometimes though, Christmas can bring out a competitive edge, and once the turkey is all eaten, you want to lock in for something challenging and see who comes out on top. Here are some titles that should appeal to board gamers of all kinds.
Ark Nova is a multi award winning game in which 1-4 players compete to establish their own 21st century zoos.
Gameplay involves frequent decision making, as you choose from a wide selection of available strategies. There are all sorts of paths that might lead your zoo towards success. Maybe you want to focus on research and conservation, maybe you want to build an aviary and fill it with exotic birds, maybe you just love lions and want to gather as many of them together as you can.
Ark Nova presents a highly competitive multiplayer experience, as you'll need to keep a close eye on the animals, sponsors, and strategies that other players are utilising. You can also take Arc Nova on singleplayer, and test your zoo-building skills in the game's solo mode.
Games of Arc Nova last for several hours, making it a great choice if you really want to lose yourself for an afternoon in a deeply tactical experience.
Earthborne Rangers is a branching narrative campaign, told through tactical card-based gameplay. It’s renowned for its deep character customisation and the way that it makes decisions matter, as choices made early in the campaign can have meaningful consequences during later sessions.
If you’re a fan of the Arkham Horror Living Card Game, Earthborne Rangers offers a similar card-driven narrative, although with a focus on nature and community, rather than on unknowable cosmic horror.
This is a game that’s fantastic for any story seekers looking to play a part in a longform adventure that will gradually unfold over weeks of play.
There are also plenty of expansions available to make the game more replayable. Stewards of the Valley adds a variety of new character creation options, Moments on the Path adds more events to the game’s travel system, while the Legacy of the Ancestors expansion adds a whole new campaign to explore.
The Game takes its environmental themes seriously, and it practices what it preaches. Its designer has claimed that all of its components are fully recyclable or compostable.
Dobble is a classic. This picture matching game of reflexes can be completed in snappy 10-minute sessions, but with five different game modes to choose from, it’s also replayable for hours at a time.
If you’re looking for a game that’s low on cost, but high on replay value, it’s hard to do better than Dobble. The simple rules make it a great game to play with kids, while also appealing to the competitive streak in all of us. Since Dobble is all about speed, anyone can pull off a win, regardless of age.
Dobble is also available in a series of fun, themed variants. You can pick up Star Wars Dobble, Marvel Emoji Dobble, and even Animal Crossing Dobble.
Arcs was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2024, winning a wide selection of awards. It's not difficult to see why. This tabletop space opera combines trick taking hand management with tactical map based battling.
Arcs has an ambitious interactive scoring system, where players can choose their objectives during gameplay, enabling a variety of different approaches to victory.
Arcs is great for 1-4 players looking to experience some tactically rich sci-fi battles. Games last for over an hour, giving you plenty of time to get stuck into strategising.
The Blighted Reach expansion adds a three act campaign that lets you weave a character-driven story across the distant depths of space.
If you’re looking for a quick and breezy card game, Sushi Go! offers 15-20 minutes packed full of flavourful fun.
Sushi Go! Is a drafting game, where players are given a handful of Japanese snacks, and they need to choose what they’ll take for themselves, and what they will pass along to the rest of the table. Whoever has gained the most points, by putting together the tastiest meal wins.
You can experiment with a spicy wasabi based strategy, collect as many dumplings as possible for a big payoff, or keep things cool by breezing into the endgame with heaps of frozen yoghurt.
This tenth anniversary edition increases the variety of food options available and amps up the game’s charm by including an adorable chibi strawberry pudding mascot.
Sushi Go! is one meal you won’t want to miss.
Heist movies are great, but what's the best way of divvying up the loot once you've grabbed it and run? Cash N Guns aims to answer this question, pitting players against each other in a frantic standoff to make off with the most money.
This chaotic party game offers 4-8 players the chance to aim foam guns at one another, and bluff their way towards a big win. Will you keep your calm through the bullets spraying around you and get your hands on bag loads of cash, or will you hobble away with nothing?
Games of Cash N Guns are over in half an hour, making it easy to get a round or two in during a game night.
A Christmassy Conclusion
Whether you’re drawn towards the cozy charm of Sushi Go!, the strategic competition of Ark Nova, or the storytelling possibilities of Earthborne Rangers, there’ll definitely be something here that you’ll enjoy.
