Ever since the Pokémon Trading Card Game launched back in 1996, it has been a smash hit with kids, and adults as well. If you’re a parent who’s uncertain about whether Pokémon cards are the right fit for your family, we’ve put together this guide to ensure that you know what you’re getting into, and to assist you in picking up the right sort of cards to ensure that you’ll be able to have a positive experience learning the game and collecting cards with your children.

What is the best Pokémon card age range?

Pokémon cards are designed for children aged 6+. While children younger than 6 can still enjoy the artwork and the colourful characters, to play the game and get the best experience, kids will need to have some preliminary knowledge of maths and the ability to read. Cards from the My First Battle set and from the Battle Academy tutorial product are designed to be accessible and easy to play with, due to their simplified abilities and uncomplicated attacks.

Decks, Booster Packs and Singles: Where should you start?

There are three ways to engage with the Pokémon TCG. Let’s go through them to discuss which option might work best for you and your family…

Decks

In order to play the Pokémon Trading Card Game, every player will need a 60 card deck. It’s possible to build a deck yourself, but you can also buy premade, prepackaged decks that will ensure that you’re ready to play straight away. Some products like V Battle Deck - Lycanroc vs Corviknight contain two decks, giving you everything that you need to play a two player game right out of the box. Other products like Deluxe Battle Deck - Miraidon ex contain only a single deck, but can be paired up against another deck like the Deluxe Battle Deck - Koraidon ex to have some evenly balanced matches.

Booster Packs

Every current Pokémon TCG booster pack contains 10 cards. The selection that you’ll find inside is randomised, although, you’ll always get 4 common cards, 3 uncommon cards, and then a selection of three rare cards that might be powerful ex Pokémon, full art illustration rares, or regular rare Pokémon.

Boosters come from a variety of different expansions that feature different Pokémon drawn together in a variety of novel themes. For example, the November 2024 set Surging Sparks is all about Pikachu, the May 2025 set Destined Rivals is themed around famous Pokémon Trainers, and the recent set Ascended Heroes is about Dragonite. You can find a theme that appeals to you, grab some packs, and see what you get.

Singles

But maybe you don’t want a preconstructed deck, and you’d rather have some specific Pokémon rather than the randomised selection that comes inside a booster pack. You can just order singles instead. Individual Pokémon cards are called singles, so if you, or your child, have a favourite Pokémon, then you can order a single depicting them to start building a collection or working towards a deck.

Whether you’re a fan of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charizard, or any of the other thousands of Pokémon that are out there, you’ll find a single depicting them somewhere in the game’s history.

Why Pokémon is great for development

As well as being an entertaining game, Pokémon cards are also a fantastic educational experience. Reading and interpreting the effects of cards tests children’s literacy, calculating the damage attacks deal requires knowledge of addition, subtraction, and multiplication, and learning to win and lose gracefully teaches children valuable lessons about good sportsmanship.

Looking for an alternative? Try Disney Lorcana

But maybe you’re not really from a Pokémon family, and you prefer a bit of Disney. Not to worry, Lorcana, the Disney card game, can scratch that itch. Just like with Pokémon, you can grab Lorcana decks, booster packs, and single cards. It’s a whole new game, with a different rule set, and you’ll get cards with Mickey Mouse rather than Pikachu on them.

Lorcana is new in the TCG space, it has been around since 2023, so it’s innovative and fresh. Aimed at a marginally older demographic of children aged 8+, it can further develop the math and literacy skills that Pokémon teaches.

Frequently Asked Questions from Parents

  • How many cards are in a Pokémon deck?
To play a round of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, both players will require a deck of 60 cards.

  • What is an "Evolution" in the Pokémon TCG?
Many Pokémon are capable of evolving. This powers them up and unlocks additional attacks. Basic Pokémon (like Charmander) evolve into Stage One Pokémon (like Charmeleon), and some can then evolve again into Stage Two Pokémon (like Charizard).

  • How do I keep my kids’ cards organised and stop them from making a mess?
Cards can be stored in binders, kept safe from damage in plastic sleeves, and slotted into deck boxes to keep them safe, secure, and out of the way when not in use.
