Disney Lorcana’s newest set, Winterspell, has brought a late Winter joy to all Illumineers with a great theme, new franchises and tons of amazing Characters. Most important this set truly brought a magical blizzard of exciting new cards to the game and we have already seen how impactful they have been on the meta game in the recent Disney Lorcana Challenge events around the globe. Unwrap the Christmas presents – Set Highlights

Winterspell, the 11th set of Disney Lorcana TCG, released on the 20th of February with pre-release events taking place a week before. The set includes as usual a core set of 204 cards evenly distributed between six Ink Colours with no dual colour cards. On top of this, the set features 18 Enchanted cards, 18 Epic cards and 2 Iconic Cards (“Pocahontas, Peacekeeper” and “Moana, Curious Explorer”.

All cards can be pulled from any of the products from this set that includes Booster Boxes and Packs, an Illumineer Trove and a Stitch Collection Starter Set. This last one is a new type of product released for the first time for set 9 (Fabled) that includes 4 booster packs (48 cards total) and a

4-pocket Binder portfolio themed around “Stitch, Rockstar” card. This set also include a Glimmer foil “Stitch, Carefree Snowboarder” promo card.

Among the Winterspell product line-up it is also worth mentioning that Ravensburger released two premium mats together with the standard ones featuring Dragon Fire and Ariel Sonic Warrior. The first one is the first ever foil play mat showcasing the Mickey and Minnie artwork from Fable and the other one is a on-line exclusive on sale at the moment featuring “Belle, Hidden archer”.

In addition, a collector-friendly bundle themed around the world’s most festive miser has just been released although it is important to mention that no Winterspell packs are featured in this product. “Scrooge McDuck Gift set” in fact includes 5 randomly selected packs for all set in rotation and a great promo card of “Scrooge, S.H.U.S.H. The main theme of Winterspell, “Flurries of Fun” links deeply into the fun and excitement of the snowy season with a lot of cards and Characters re-imagined to fit this theme. The most notable ones are obviously those from Lilo and Stitch as the set expands the franchise to include also stories and Characters from the animated series. Angel, Reuben and Dr. Hamsterviel are only a few examples of new Glimmers that are debuting in this set. Linking straight into the Winter theme, Winterspell also features cards from “Disney, a Christmas Carol” movie and Frozen.

In addition, this set also sees the addition of Glimmers from Darkwing Duck that was announced last year when set first previewed, Pocahontas and “The Fox and the Hound” making Winterspell a very rich set from a thematic point of view.

In terms of Gameplay, Winterspell features the first card to substantially alter a major game rule. The new Sapphire card “Moana, Explorer” in fact allows the Player to use cards their discard pile when performing the “put a card into your Inkwell” action. This means that once Moana is in Play, Players can take any Inkable card from their discard and put it into the Inkwell the same way as they would do when using a card from their hand. This effect works also in combination with other cards that allow to perform additional Inking actions (like “Sail to the Azurite sea”) although it does not apply to cards with more detailed instruction, for example “put the top card of your deck into the Inkwell”.

The new set also continues to expand the new mechanics released in Whispers in the Well, in particular around the Whisper cards and their Boost abilities. In Winterspell we have not only the very first Location with a Boost effect but also plenty of cards that interact with Boosted cards including some with de-boosting effects like the Action card “Come out and Fight”. Among the new Whispers, “Bambi, Ethereal Fawn” and “Pete, Ghost of Christmas Future” are the most notable ones considering they grant a consistent draw ability to Ink Colours that usually do not have much. “Genie, Magical Researcher” is also a very interesting card considering it can quest for as much lore as the cards underneath him.

Winterspell - Standout Cards

Looking through the Disney Lorcana Winterspell cards, there are a few ones that are getting more and more popular among players, in particular for their impact on the meta-game. Interestingly, the two most notable ones are not Legendary or Super Rare cards but the Uncommon “Granmother Willow, Ancient Advisor” and “Nani, Stage Manager”. The first one has a passive ability that reduces the cost of the first Character played in a turn by one while the second one has an “on play” effect that allows to take a Character with a cost of two among the first four cards of their deck. In both cases, these Amber cards can accelerate and provide consistency to the very popular Amber-Emerald Dogs Deck centred around Lady and the Tramp card.

To help Players deal with Aggro Decks, Lorcana Winterspell card list features “Angel, Experiment 624”, the most expensive non-Enchanted card of the set currently. Angel is extremely handy in any Steel Deck considering her ability to deal two damages per turn to any Character by discarding a card while also gaining Resist +2 if the Player has no cards left in hand. Considering these two abilities, it is pretty easy to see how Angel can fit any deck using Steel improving the ability to deal not only with Evasive Characters but also with those that usually never exert like Grandmother Willow.

Conclusion - Why Winterspell Is Worth Watching

Overall, Winterspell is a very rich set with plenty of cards that are both beautifully illustrated and very well design from a gameplay point of view. Being a Player myself, I feel this set brought a very fresh look to the game environment with a much larger variety of Decks becoming more and more interesting to play. It is true that Amber-Emerald, Amethyst-Steel and Amethyst-Sapphire are still the main three contenders for the top spots at most of the competitive events but we have seen many other Decks getting more and more attentition.

Among the most interesting ones, Players should be on the look out for Amethyst-Ruby and Sapphire-Steel that gained some very well deserved card draw in this set together with some interesting tech cards. Ruby Decks can also benefit from the new Action “Grab your Bow” that finally adds back some good removal to this Deck. Interestingly, Ruby cards can now synergise quite well with Amber leading to a very fun and cheap deck that we will surely see a lot during next set championship.
