Released almost 25 years ago, the Pokémon TCG has gone on to become one with the most widely played and collected trading card games of all time. Over a thousand Pokémon and nine generations later, though, and it’s still that original 151 that people hold most dear.

Enter the Pokémon 151 set. Due to launch on September 22, 2023, this special set brings back every single one of the original Pokémon with new art, new mechanics, and new special treatments. If you grew up loving the Kanto region, and miss the days where Eevee only had three evolutions, Pokémon 151 could rekindle that passion.

The Pokémon TCG has evolved a lot since the days of Red, Blue, and Yellow. Pokémon 151 reflects this, bringing back every single one of the original 151 Pokémon in one expansion, but with the mechanics, designs, and balance of the current Scarlet & Violet game.

An important aspect of this set is its nostalgia factor. For many, the original 151 were the top tier of generations, and the one plenty started their Pokémon journey with. Though there have been excellent Pokémon in every generation, it’s hard to deny the impact this first lot have. The Pokémon 151 set ensures every pack you open will be bursting with first-generation nostalgia, and, with every Pokémon in one expansion, there’s a real chance of building the gen one deck you’ve been dreaming of since Silver & Gold burst on the scene 20 years ago!

A particularly important part of Pokémon 151 is the return of Kadabra. Famously barred from appearing in the Pokémon TCG for many years thanks to its inspiration, magician Uri Geller, Kadabra is making its triumphant return to the game in Pokémon 151 following a surprise change of heart by Geller over three years. That makes Pokémon 151 not just a neat throwback to older, simpler times, but also a bold step forward in Pokémon’s history as well.

This expansion continues the updated card style introduced in Scarlet & Violet, including the more tasteful silver frame and better readability of things like Energy and Item cards. On top of that, we’re also getting a whole bunch of new ex Pokémon from the Kanto region. ex Pokémon are stronger than usual, but are also a bigger threat by costing you two prize cards when they’re knocked out. For collectors, their art is amazing, breaking out of the frame with eye-catching illustrations showing the Pokémon at their strongest. So far, we’ve seen not just Vensaur, Charizard, and Blastoise given the ex treatment, but also fan-favourites like Nintetales, Wigglytuff, Arbok, and Mew.

Thanks to its combination of nostalgic Pokémon and more up-to-date gameplay, Pokémon 151 is going to be the perfect place to jump into the game if you haven’t already. Fortunately, there’s a whole organised play scheme out there, where you can find players and get games in, right from your local game store. Ask in-store or keep an eye on their social media, as most game stores that sell the Pokémon TCG will also host prerelease events where you can play with the new cards early, in-store leagues, or even casual play sessions to help you get started.

Playing in your store can be a fantastic experience. You can meet like-minded players who become close friends, trade cards, and get advice on improving your deck. Hobby stores are lovely bastions of people coming together to enjoy card games, so why not make Pokémon 151 the one you take the first step for and get involved?

Pokémon 151 is going to be a massively popular expansion, so you’ll want to make sure you get your preorders sorted lest you be disappointed come launch day. One option is heading into your local store and asking about preorders, or you can go to an online marketplace like Magic Madhouse and get them there at the click of a button. While local stores have the community aspect, online retailers are the winner when it comes to convenience and availability – they’ll likely stock every card you need to complete your deck, or the Elite Trainer Boxes you’re hoping to crack in September.

If you’re wanting to buy Pokémon 151, the best tip is to get in there quickly. Special expansions like these are in high demand, and can become out of stock everywhere within hours of being put up for sale.

You don’t need to break the bank and drop serious cash, though! If you’re a newcomer to the game, an Elite Trainer Box is a great way to break in. If you’re a more seasoned veteran, keep an eye out for the specific singles you want, and come the Pokémon 151 launch, you’ll likely find a whole lot entering the marketplace.

Of course, the crème de la crème of Pokémon 151 is the Ultra-Premium Collection. Containing exclusive etched foil cards, pa deck box, coins, 16 boost packs, and even a playmat, you’ll need to be ready to leap on it within seconds if you find it on sale anywhere. You could always follow Magic Madhouse on social media to see when it’s next coming into stock, but you’ll need to be faster than a Rapidash if you want to get what is easily the most sought-after product in the whole expansion.

Pokémon 151 is a set for Pokémon fans, both new and old. Whether you remember sitting with a Game Boy trying to take down Misty’s Starmie, or were introduced to the Kanto region through Pokémon Let’s Go! on the Switch, this generation is the one that set the tone for the decades of adventures that were to follow.

The entire of the Kanto region is confirmed to be in Pokémon 151, though we’re still waiting to see which ones will get the new ex cards, and plenty of it has yet to be revealed. Personally, I’m most excited to see my favourite Pokémon ever, Porygon. It’s always a delight when that little digital dude pops up, and for something as special as Pokémon 151, we’re sure to get some fantastic new art to really let him, and the rest of the generation, shine.

The Pokémon 151 TCG set launches on September 22. Make sure you preorder your packs, boxes, and cards through Magic Madhouse today, as this is going to be one people from all corners of the Pokémon community will want to get in on!
