If you could please start by telling us about yourself, what games do you play, when did you start playing?
I’m Roberta, I’m 38 and work as a retail manager for a makeup brand! I’ve always loved Pokémon but only started collecting the cards a couple of years ago and dabbled in the TCG itself more recently around 6 months ago.
If you play a TCG what is your favourite deck, game format and card?
Since I’m quite new to the Pokemon TCG I can’t say I ever played with any other decks than the pre-built ones when you first learn to play - I’m still getting used to the rules and how cards play in to each other :)
Do you feel you find that more females are getting involved in gaming since you started playing?
Definitely! I have seen many content creators share their favourite decks and celebrating wins recently, a lot from in-personal tournaments; when I’m more confident with the rules to play without the hints online I can’t wait to participate in one!
Can you tell us about a gaming character or game developer who has inspired you and why?
Not TCG-related and I hope I’m not too off-topic, but I have to say Lara Croft! I’m old enough to remember the first Tomb Raider game coming out and how it was so refreshing to see an independent female character behaving like a tomboy, shooting to kill and solving mysteries along the way! I think she inspired me to never care what anyone will think of you, and all that matters is what you think of yourself!
What challenges do you think women face in the gaming world and How can the gaming community be changed to make it more inclusive for women?
Certainly the space in which I find myself has been very welcoming to me, especially as a new collector. It might seem like an obvious one but I think the main challenge women face is the gaming world is a presumed lack of knowledge and understanding of what we are doing purely based on being female. Although I haven’t really experienced this first hand, it’s important to look out for one another and call out your friends when they assume something they shouldn’t or make silly comments.
How do you see the future of women in gaming, both as players and as creators of games and gaming content?
Honestly I am very excited about the future of women in gaming! The Pokemon community on Instagram and the Magic Madhouse Discord truly feel like a great space to chat and share info, and it feels like every day I discover new profiles ran by women who inspire me and make me so excited to share my next post.
We really are one community with a similar passion and with so many awesome females in the sphere, the only way is up!
Please let us know how we can find the content you create, and what our readers can expect to see.
