Characters from Disney worlds of all kinds come together in Lorcana, a TCG based on the musical animated movies in the Disney canon. Some of these characters step directly from the screen to the tabletop, resembling their cinematic counterparts down to the smallest detail.
Other characters adopt a different approach, Taking the stories that they come from and twisting them in new and exciting directions. Today, we're going to talk about Storyborn, Dreamborn, and Floodborn characters in Lorcana and examine their different characteristics.
Storyborn, Dreamborn and Floodborn
So first of all, let's talk a bit about the story of the game (the lore of Lorcana, if you will). Players in Lorcana control Illumineers, magic users who can conjure 'glimmers' from ink and light. Every character, item, and location in your Lorcana deck is a glimmer, a magical representation of a person, place, or object from a Disney film or cartoon.
Characters in Lorcana all possess a variety of different classifications. For example, Woody is a toy, Stitch is an alien, and so on. Every character will either be classified as Storyborn, Dreamborn, or Floodborn. But what do these terms mean? Let's define them one by one...
Storyborn
Storyborn characters are glimmers that are pulled directly from the plot that they originate from without any changes or modifications. They are effectively glimmers that represent the unaltered 'canonical' version of the character.
Sometimes, different Storyborn glimmers can be pulled from different moments in a character's arc: for example, Simba - Scrappy Cub represents the little lion as a child, while Simba - Rightful King shows him when he's fully grown and ready to reclaim his rightful throne and become the titular Lion King.
Many, though not all, Storyborn characters occupy lower rarities, and they often have simpler effects than their Dreamborn and Floodborn counterparts.
Dreamborn
Dreamborn glimmers are special variants that represent alternative versions of Disney characters that never came to be.
Sometimes Dreamborn versions of characters have achieved a goal that their cinematic counterpart were unable to accomplish. For example, Jafar - High Sultan of Lorcana has succeeded in his scheme to seize power, unlike the actual Jafar from Aladdin, who ended up sealed inside a lamp.
At other times, Dreamborn characters are their alternative counterparts who appear in spin offs, like Mickey Mouse - Musketeer, who represents the version of Mickey that appears in the 2004 movie Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers.
Finally, some Dreamborn characters have simply taken a different path through life than their storyborn counterparts, like Belle - Inventive Engineer who took up tinkering like her father Maurice.
Dreamborn characters, while different from their Storyborn characters, are typically recognisable, and their tales doesn't diverge too much. Unlike...
Floodborn
Floodborn characters are glimmers that have taken a completely different path through life than the one they took on TV. They were created by a magical event known as the 'flood', which permanently changed them from their previous Storyborn form.
What if Stich became a rockstar? What if Tinker Bell was 20 feet tall? What if Hades was the king of the Gods? Floodborn characters in Lorcana allow us to glimpse these untold possibilities and see radically different versions of familiar characters.
Floodborn characters are distinguished by the 'shift' ability. You can play a floodborn character on top of another character with the same name at a reduced cost. The first character will then transform into their new floodborn coutnerpart and be ready for action right away.
Exploring the differences
| Classification | Meaning | Mechanics |
| Storyborn | The familiar version of the character transported directly from their story. | Often, though not always, simpler than Dreamborn and Floodborn cards. |
| Dreamborn | An alternative version of the character, where they have taken a different path in life. | Often more complex than Storyborn characters. |
| Floodborn | An entirely different version of the character from a completely different story. | Has the ‘Shift’ ability, allowing other characters to transform into them. |
A Floodborn Conclusion
So now you know the distinction between Storyborn, Dreamborn, and Floodborn characters. Hopefully, this knowledge will enhance your Lorcana deckbuilding and grant you a different perspective on the game's story.
