Understanding the New Magic: the Gathering God Packs
Posted by Magic Madhouse on 7th Oct 2026
Many card games have "God Packs", random, incredibly difficult to find, boosters that are completely packed full of rare cards.
Starting in 2027, with the release of the set Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, god packs are coming to Magic: the Gathering. Here's a breakdown of everything there is to know about these divinely inspired boosters.

Starting in 2027, with the release of the set Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, god packs are coming to Magic: the Gathering. Here's a breakdown of everything there is to know about these divinely inspired boosters.
Regular Booster God Packs
Play boosters (previously called "draft boosters") are getting their name simplified and will now just be refered to as "booster packs".
One in every one thousand MTG booster packs will be a "god pack", and inside you'll find...
- 1 God pack celebration card (A nonplayable card congratulating you for opening a god pack).
- 10 non-foil rare or mythic rare cards.
- 2 non-foil "booster fun" rare or mythic rare cards ("booster fun" cards are cards with alternative art treatments).
- 2 foil rare or mythic rare cards.
Collector Booster Gods Packs
Just like regular boosters, it's also possible for collector boosters to be god packs. In fact, collector boosters are actually significantly more likely to be MTG god packs, When you open a collector booster, you have a 1 in 300 chance of it being a god pack.
The contents of a collector booster that's a god pack are also different compared to what you'll find inside a play booster god pack. Here's what to expect...
- 1 God pack celebration card.
- 1 Foil land.
- 3 Foil rare or mythic rare regular art cards.
- 3 Non-foil "booster fun" rare or mythic rare cards.
- 5 foil "booster fun" rare or mythic rare cards.
What happens if I open a God Pack during a Limited event?
Imagine this: you're in the middle of a draft, or cracking open a prerelease kit for some sealed play at your local game store. To your delight, one of the boosters that you open up happens to be a god pack. What should you do? If you're drafting, you don't want to share your rare cards with the rest of the table, and if you're playing sealed then any player opening a god pack gains a massive advantage.
Never fear, Wizards of the Coast have accounted for this possibility. They have advised stores and tournament organisers to give players who open a god pack during an event an additional booster. That player can then use the cards from that extra booster during the event, and they also get to keep the god pack and take it home with them.
Other Changes Coming to MTG Boosters
As well as the introduction of Magic: The Gathering god packs, Wizards of the Coast are also making a few additional changes to Magic Boosters from 2027 onwards...
- Foil commons and uncommons will no longer be available in booster packs.
- Because of the above, there is no longer a guaranteed foil card in every booster.
- Collector boosters are removing two commons and one uncommon from their foil slots.
According to an announcement from Wizards of the Coast, these changes are being made to open up room in their printing capacity.
The Rise of God Packs
God packs are coming to in-universe Magic: the Gathering sets in 2027, and will start appearing in Universes Beyond sets in 2028.
