What Is the MTG Star Trek Universes Beyond Set?

Magic: The Gathering Star Trek is the next Universes Beyond set, which is where Magic crosses over with other famous IPs to bring famous worlds and characters to life on Magic cards for the first time. Star Trek is a huge franchise, with fans all over the world, and despite Magic’s history in ‘high fantasy’, it’s a perfect fit for sci-fi too, especially off the back of space-themed set Edge of Eternities. Magic has vehicles, strange creatures, equipment… all very Star Trek.

Characters and Factions Fans Are Watching Closely

Something really interesting about Magic The Gathering Star Trek is how all the different ‘factions’ of the franchise will be translated to cards. From Starfleet to the iconic captains, like James T. Kirk, to crew, like Spock, and of course the wonderful array of spaceshifts and aliens, friendly and hostile. It will also be fascinating to see how key themes, like ‘exploration’ and technology will be represented on the cards.

Possible Mechanics and Gameplay Themes

Star Trek themes should translate very well to Magic: The Gathering gameplay. We don’t know all the mechanics, but we’ve had a few clues, and some actual key words, and can have a good guess…

• Exploration-based gameplay – we’ve seen actual ‘explore’ included in the set which is brilliant
• Legendary creature focus – at the very least we’re going to see a lot of legendary creatures, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if we have some kind of ‘legends matter’ mechanic too, possibly linking to particular creature types
• Artifact and vehicle themes – we already know spacecraft are in the set and I’d expect vehicles too, and we’re bound to have more artifacts in the form of space technology and equipment
• Crew or teamwork mechanics – it’s likely one of the many ‘teamwork’ type mechanics will return, or we’ll get a new one, representing the crew working together. We’ve already seen that James T. Kirk produces Officer tokens too, so I imagine there will be many more of those
• Commander-friendly build paths – with so many legends, we’re going to have great new Commander options, likely with some brand new build ideas

Why This Set Matters for Commander Players

More so than in world sets, Universes Beyond have a strong Commander appeal because players get to build decks around some of the best loved characters of all time. UB sets also tend to have a lot of legendaries, providing lots of fun new options to run as commanders, as well as ‘faction’ identities (e.g. alien creature types, like Borg) or deck themes to build around.

Collector Appeal: Starships, Showcase Cards and Franchise Nostalgia  

Star Trek is going to have an unbelievable collector appeal. Firstly, Star Trek has a huge fan base of collectors who are going to love this set and all of the iconic characters and ship. Second, it really taps into nostalgia, especially with some of the premium cards and treatments.  

They managed to get real actors to sign the headliner cards – that’s never been done before! There are also stardate cards; reprints, but with Star Trek art, representing iconic moments. LCARS are brilliant treatments that show the iconic Star Trek user interface on cards with a font straight from Starfleet systems! And for the super nostalgia hit, the Classic Enterprise cards capture the iconic retro posters that are featured in cinemas around the world. There are also scene cards, and Beam Me Up Bundle cards depicting iconic spacecraft.

What Products Could Be Included?  

Based on previous product announcements, we’re certainly going to get Play and Collector Boosters, and Commander Decks (including Collector versions) have been announced too, along with bundles, scene boxes and prerelease packs.
