Marvel and MTG come together again for Darkhold Destiny, a new original story

Marvel and MTG come together again for Darkhold Destiny, a new original story

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 12th Oct 2026

Magic: The Gathering and Marvel have come together before, but never like this. Darkhold Destiny breaks new ground in our universe and tears open the walls of reality in the Marvel universe by telling a brand new original story about Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death, laying claim to the mystical and malign power of the eldritch Darkhold tome.

No other MTG crossover has ever tried to tell a new original story before using the characters of the world it's adapting. When Darkhold Destiny releases on April 9th, 2027, it will be accompanied by a storyline told through several comics, presenting an epic tale featuring the characters of Marvel that you'll then be able to reenact on your tabletop using cards from the set.

Here's everything we know about MTG's Darkhold Destiny so far...

Card Reveals

Three headliner cards from the Magic: The Gathering/Marvel crossover Darkhold Destiny Magik, Ilyana Rasputin, Hela, Mistress of Darkness, and The Darkhold.

In their panel at Comic Con announcing Darkhold Destiny, Wizards of the Coast revealed a selection of upcoming Magic: The Gathering cards pulled from within the fathomless depths of the Darkhold.

Hela, Mistress of Darkness is a black 6 mana 6/5 God Sorcerer Villain. While she is in play, once per turn, when a player loses life during her controller's turn, she can create that amount of tapped 2/2 zombie tokens. So if she hits an opponent for six damage with an attack, she can follow it up by spawning six undead minions to support her.

As the goddess of the afterlife, Hela's work isn't done when she dies. She has a new 'vengeance' ability, which can be cast by exiling her from the graveyard. 'Dark Tutor' allows Hela's controller to search their deck for any card and then put it into their hand or into the graveyard. Putting all of the tools of the underworld at their disposal.

Next is Magik, Illyana Rasputin, one of the heroines of this story who will be opposing Hela. For three mana, one of which must be black and one of which must be red, Magik is a 3/3 that exiles a card from the top of your library every turn, providing card advantage by allowing you to potentially play the card she casts away.

If you sacrifice two or more permanents while Magik is in play, then she transforms into Darkchild, Demon Uncaged. This buffs her up into a 4/4, allows her to become indestructible at the cost of four life, and increases the number of cards that she exiles from the top of the deck each turn, providing even more versatility.

Finally, there's The Darkhold itself. This devilish book provides power at a price. For three mana, two of which must be black, it can be tapped to gain a "sin counter". Its controller then draws cards equal to the number of sin counters on The Darkhold and takes damage equal to the number of cards in their hand.

While using The Darkhold is undoubtedly damaging, its second ability allows you to turn the tables on your opponents. By paying eight mana, The Darkhold reduces the life total of every player to match the life total of the player with the least life at the table. This means that you can use The Darkhold's first effect to deliberately trim away almost all of your life, and then its second effect to inflict that same harm upon each of your opponents, enabling you to finish them all off with a single dramatic attack.

The Commander Decks

The Four Commander decks from the MTG/Marvel crossover Darkhold Destiny: Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Lord sof Hell, and Midnights Sons.

Darkhold Destiny will feature four Commander decks, each emphasising a different magical faction from the world of Marvel.

Lords of Hell, a red/black sacrifice deck commanded by Hela. Midnight Sons, a white/black vampire typal deck commanded by Blade. Gods of Asgard, a white/red/green equipment deck commanded by Thor, and Strange Academy, a white/blue/black blink deck commanded by Doctor Strange.

Each of these four mystical decks are available to pre order from Magic Madhouse.

Spellcasting and Dimensions

Three Magic: the Gathering cards showing off the Arcane and Dimension mechanics from Darkhold Destiny.

Darkhold Destiny features a mechanic returning from more than 20 years ago, and another mysterious brand new mechanic that we currently know very little about.

Arcane spells debuted in the set Champions of Kamigawa, which released in October of 2004. They are a subtype of instants and sorceries with mysterious implications. When Marvel Superheroes released last year, arcane spells returned for the first time since their appearance in Kamigawa on the cards Hex Magic, and We Say Thee Nay. In Darkhold Destiny, however, arcane magic will be returning in full force, given the sets focus on the mystical aspects of the Marvel universe. Two new arcane cards have already been revealed, with more certain to come prior to the set's April 2027 release.

Even more mysterious than the return of arcane cards, however, is the introduction of 'dimensions'. The land Temple of Khonsu has been revealed, which enters play tapped unless its controller also controls a 'dimension'. No other information has been provided on just what a 'dimension' is. Dimensions could be a whole new card type, or something else entirely. We'll just have to wait until more of the mysteries of the Darkhold are revealed over time.
