The latest Universes Beyond set in MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender is nearly upon us, and it’s fair to say players are pretty excited.

Full transparency – Avatar: The Last Airbender has been on my watch list for a long time, but I’ve never fully got round to delving in. Now is the perfect opportunity to dive in!

Full transparency – Avatar: The Last Airbender has been on my watch list for a long time, but I’ve never fully got round to delving in. Now is the perfect opportunity to dive in!

Just like the show, the set will likely follow the adventures of Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph and their quest to topple the Fire Lord Ozai.

Let’s see what the upcoming release has in store for us.

When Is the MTG Avatar Set Coming Out?

MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender will be the final standard-legal set of 2025, releasing worldwide on Friday 21 November 2025. In line with the usual scheduling, the pre-release will be the weekend before (Friday 14th November), giving players the chance to be amongst the first to get their hands on the new cards and sample the limited format.

MTG Avatar: the Last Airbender will release digitally on Arena just before the global paper launch, on November 18th.

What Is Universes Beyond and Why Avatar Fits

Universes Beyond is where other famous franchises – from Lord of the Rings to Warhammer 40K, Lara Croft to Street Fighter – appear on Magic: The Gathering cards. This can take many forms; we’ve had Secret Lairs with just a handful of cards (e.g. Tomb Raider, The Walking Dead, and Street Fighter), we’ve had Commander Decks only (e.g. Warhammer 40K), or full, draftable sets (e.g. Lord of Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth). A big change this year is that now these Universes Beyond sets are also legal in the Standard format, not skipping straight to modern as has been the case in the past.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is the perfect fit for Magic – not only having a strong fan base which both overlaps with current magic players, but will also bring new players to the game. What’s more, the ‘elemental’ nature of Avatar already fits really well with the Magic: The Gathering colour pie, meaning the four elements get a colour each (possibly leaving black out for villains?). Not to mention, with the continuing growth of the Commander format, players love legendary creatures, and there’s sure to be a lot of new options based on the set.

Official Artwork, Themes, and Confirmed Characters

From the cards we’ve seen already, MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender has a stunning art style, leaning into the dynamic manga roots but with art pieces that really pop with colour and texture.

We’ve seen some of the core characters of course, too. Ang is here (obviously) and, as common with Universes Beyond releases, we get to see him in different forms along the journey, from being The Last Airbender in mono-white, to a five colour Avatar form. Zuko too has various forms, from exile and an Avatar Hunter to ultimately becoming the Fire Lord. Katara also features on a number of cards, showing her waterbending skill and being a central figure in Team Avatar.

We now also know what the mechanics are:

Airbending – of course, all of the different ‘bendings’ feature as mechanics. Airbending allows you to exile permanents (sometimes just yours, sometimes your opponent’s) which remain exiled, however you can pay two mana to cast them again. A really interesting ‘blink’ alternative to help remove your opponents board, protect your own permanents, or gain additional enter the battlefield triggers

Waterbending – some spells and abilities have ‘waterbending’ which has an additional effect, which can be paid for both with generic mana and also tapping untapped artifacts and creatures you control

Earthbending – predictably, earthbending is all about lands, turning them into 0/0 creatures with haste and putting +1/+1 counters on them. What’s neat is that if they die or are exiled, they come back as lands, so you're not hurting your mana resources

Firebending – I’m surprised, but this isn’t about dealing damage! Well, in a direct sense at least. Firebending adds red mana to your mana pool when attacking which then doesn’t go away at end of combat, giving you more resources for playing spells and ultimately… doing damage!
