MTG Double Strike Explained: Rules, Timing, and Damage Guide

Is there a scarier keyword in all of Magic: the Gathering than the keyword in MTG ‘double strike’? As someone that’s been on the end of more than their fair share of double-strike deaths, I can tell you it’s a seriously powerful mechanic that makes blocking a nightmare and death near inevitable. MTG Double Strike Explained: Timing, Damage, and Common Mistakes

Topline: MTG Double Strike is an evergreen keyword that enables two distinct combat damage-dealing instances per combat phase. Let’s double-down and delve into what it is and how best to use it.

What is MTG Double Strike? The Core Rules

Fans of the core rules know the explanation of Double Strike is rather long and complex – but in ‘real speak’, it’s pretty simple.

Double Strike is a riff on First Strike. First Strike enables a creature to deal its damage to the creature that it’s blocking, or is being blocked by, before the other creature. The creature literally strikes first, flavorfully usually because it’s especially gifted in combat (a knight, for example).

Double Strike is first strike, but then the creature ALSO deals normal combat damage too! It’s literally striking twice. Technically, this means it’s dealing damage during the first combat damage step AND the second. So, if a creature with the static ability of double strike is present, it creates a second combat step – one for first strike damage, the second for regular damage.

This means the creature has the chance to clear out the block before it receives damage itself, and, if unblocked entirely, it’ll hit the defending player twice. This gets outrageous when paired with ‘when this creature deals combat damage to a player’ synergies, especially with equipment like the Umezawa’s Jitte or the iconic ‘swords’ for example.

Timing the Combat Steps: First vs. Regular Damage

Most of us play Magic instinctively without really thinking about what’s happening in terms of the steps of a turn. Technically, however, first strike damage happens during the First Combat Step, and regular damage happens during the Second Combat Step. A creature with double strike deals its damage in both steps.

Complex Interactions: Trample, Lifelink, and Protection

  • Double Strike and Trample: If a creature has both double strike and trample, then any excess damage from the First Combat Step is carried over to the second, effectively meaning it's ‘unblocked’. (NB – if a blocker is removed in the first step but the double striker doesn’t have trample, it won’t deal any damage in the Second Combat Step)
  • Double Strike and Lifelink: Lifelink applies twice, so a double striking lifelinker gains double the life, how nice!
  • Multiple Blockers: If a double striker is blocked by multiple blockers, the damage is assigned sequentially. This means you can use the damage from the First Combat step to remove one of the blockers that won’t then deal damage in the second step

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Whiffing – if your double striker doesn’t have trample, then it can often ‘whiff’ with the second strike, if it doesn’t have trample. So if the blocker is killed, but your attacker doesn’t have trample, it does not deal damage to the defending player in the second step.
  • Weaker stats – bear in mind often double strikers can have weaker power/toughness stats as a result of striking twice. Pump spells can be incredibly effective, however!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does double strike stack?

No, multiple instances of double strike are redundant.

What happens if my creature loses double strike mid-combat?

If it loses the ability after the first step, it will not deal damage in the second step.

Is double strike the same as first strike?

No, first strike only deals damage once (in the first step). Double strike is basically dealing first strike damage AND regular damage (hence the ‘double’)
