MTG Lorwyn: Eclipsed - A Full Product Overview for Fans & Drafters

MTG Lorwyn: Eclipsed - A Full Product Overview for Fans & Drafters

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 5th Mar 2026

Lorwyn: Eclipsed is a new standard-legal Magic: The Gathering set release based on the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor (think of it like a light/dark side of the same world). The setting is classic high fantasy, a magical world reminiscent of European folklore of faeries and elves, and other beloved creature types (including changelings, who are a bit of everything!).

What is Lorwyn: Eclipsed?

Lorwyn: Eclipsed is a new standard-legal Magic: The Gathering set release based on the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor (think of it like a light/dark side of the same world). The setting is classic high fantasy, a magical world reminiscent of European folklore of faeries and elves, and other beloved creature types (including changelings, who are a bit of everything!).

The Standard-legal set releases with Play Boosters, Commander decks and Collector Boosters. There are also two 60-card Standard-legal ‘theme’ decks. If you’re keen for a self-contained draft experience, there’s the Draft Night box which has everything you need for a Pick-Two draft experience (including a Collector Booster prize). And, as usual, there are Bungles, and Pre-release Packs at launch.

The set released on 23 January 2026.

This set is very much a return to Lorwyn; all those beloved creatures are here, with flavourful mechanics and call-backs. Let’s take a deeper look at the mechanics and flavour.

Mechanics, Flavour & Set Identity

We’ve two mechanics to look at first:

  • Blight – Shadowmoor’s gloom has been previously shown via -1/-1 counters, which are returning here as part of the keyword ‘Blight’ which instructs you to put a certain number of them on a creature you control for an effect
  • Vivid – a call back to the vivid lands, ‘Vivid’ ability cares about the number of colours among permanents you control

Then the returning mechanics:

  • Transforming double-faced cards – as Lorwyn-Shadowmoor is a plane all about transformation, it makes sense to have double faced cards representing both sides
  • Evoke – returning to the plane where we first saw it, ‘Evoke’ is back. Featured on elemental creatures, it lets you cast the spell for a (usually) cheaper cost, but then the creature is sacrificed
  • Changling – another from the original Lorwyn, a creature or kindred card with changeling is all creature types
  • Kindred – a returning mechanic (previously known as tribal), Kindred gives creature types to non-creature spells
  • Convoke – Considering this is a creature focused set, it makes perfect sense to have convoke here, which enables you to tap untapped creatures to pay mana costs
  • Behold – a returning mechanic from Tarkir Dragonstorm, ‘Behold’ invites you to reveal a permanent of a certain type from your hand, or one you have in play, for an effect. A natural fit with kindred

As for the flavour, the ‘booster fun’ treatments are doing a fantastic job of showing the two sides of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor. Artist Rebecca Guay created some of the most iconic pieces of the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, and so it's fitting she’s the artist for the serialized version of Bitterbloom Bearer. Individually numbered, this is going to be highly collectable. It appears only in Lorwyn Eclipsed Collector Boosters.

Beloved MTG artists from the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks are returning with select borderless cards, available in both non-foil and traditional foil in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.

And there’s a unique twist on the shock lands in the set: they are doubled faced; one side is Lorwyn, one side is Shadowmoor. Mechanically, they are identical to their counterparts in the usual Magic frame, and appear in both non-foil and traditional foil in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.

Card Gallery

MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed Spoilers are now fully out, and there are so many fairy-tastic cards revealed for Limited, Standard, Commander and beyond, let’s have a look.

  • Bitterblossom Bearer – Bitterblossom on a stick! Bitterblossom was one of the most dominant cards in Standard and Limited when it was legal, and even today it’s beloved in Cube and Commander. Bitterblossom Bearer has the same ability stapled onto a 1/1 faerie. It also has flash, which I love, meaning not only can you hold up counter-magic, but it’s likely you’ll manage at least one token out of it even if they have removal
  • Hallowed Fountain and the other shock lands – aside from the original dual lands (which are on The Reserved List, and so never to be printed again), the so called ‘shock lands’ are the best of the bunch, searchable with fetchlands and able to come in untapped with no loss of tempo. I love the doubled-faced treatments too
  • Ajani, Outland Chaperone – a ruthlessly efficient planewalker that thanks to a Temple Garden and Llanowar Elf can come down on turn two in Standard. It creates tokens, removes threats and provides card advantage – what’s not to love?
  • Vibrance – I love all the hybrid mana evoke elementals, but I’ve picked Vibrance here as removal plus the ability to tutor any land is potent. We should see this cycle in all kinds of formats
  • Doran, Besieged by Time – the original Doran is one of my favourite creatures so I’ve a soft spot for this new take on the legendary treefolk. This one still has a preference for toughness, but now rewards power/toughness differences generally
  • Mutable Explorer – a callback to Mutavault, this little-guy makes its own Mutavault when it enters. A great ramp option that works especially well with landfall and flicker effects

What This Means for Drafters, Players & Collectors

Draft & Standard Players - What to Watch

With the set still in its early days, we’re still finding out what the best strategies are. What we do know, however, is that the set is based around five two-colour pairs. While not impossible to draft the other five pairs, you’ll certainly have your work cut out.

Thankfully, the five pairs are built around five creature types, so are easy to spot. They are: White/Blue Merfolk, Black/Red Goblins, Green/White Kithkin, Blue/Red Elementals and Black/Green Elves. Each has its own flavour and strategy, so once you’re locked into one of the creatures keep a look out for support cards.

Another element to consider – pun intended – is the inclusion of hybrid mana, making colour splashing a little less punishing.

Lastly, remember all the treatments will impact value, so you could make some amazing pulls when drafting…. and may want to pick accordingly!

Collectors & Long-Term Value Seekers

We’ve already looked at the variants, from the serialised headliner to reversible shock lands and all other kinds of ‘Booster Fun’ variants, which will have huge interest for collectors. Considering this set is also about the beloved plane of Lorwyn, then it may be worth investing in sealed product now before prices potentially increase after its release.

With the full set now live, it’s the perfect time to get ordering – just remember that prices can go down as well as up. If you’re sure you want the card, go for it, but if not, it may be worth holding off for a little longer to see how the meta shakes out. Prices may go up, but then at least you know you’re investing in something that’s seeing play. That said, there are bargains to be had now!

Conclusion

MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed looks like a GREAT set, and this early moment in a set’s release is a great time where we can try out all kinds of fun possibilities. If you’re going to a pre-release, remember to stick to one of the five creature-type-based colour pairs, and have extra sleeves ready for any valuable pulls. It’s also worth keeping an eye on card prices, in case it's worth selling-on any chase cards you’re not going to use.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the new cards and see if faeries in particular are anything like they were the first time around. What are you looking forward to?
