MTG's New Reality Fracture Expansion Lets Players Empower and Customise a Planeswalker

Preview season for Reality Fracture has officially begun. Magic: the Gathering's newest expansion features the mind mage Jace Beleren undertaking a quest to shatter and rebuild the multiverse according to his own twisted design. We've already seen the parallel Universe Versions of Planeswalkers that he created to achieve his goals, and the reimagined version of Strixhaven that he's using to stage his invasion. Today, we saw something brand new: a mechanic allowing MTG players to empower and customise their Planeswalker. Let's take a look...

Empower Jace

The card Protege's Awakening and a token Jace Planeswalker Card from Reality Fracture

The new 'Empower Jace' ability is the headline mechanic of Reality Fracture, and it taps into previously unexplored design space to enable players to interact with planeswalker cards like never before.

When a card 'empowers Jace X', it creates a token Jace Planeswalker, and then places X loyalty counters on it. If a Jace token is already in play, then it simply places the counters on that token.

For example, the card Protege's Awakening Empowers Jace 4, meaning that it puts 4 loyalty counters on a Jace Planeswalker token when it gets cast.

Those Jace tokens start with two effects. At the cost of one loyalty, they enable their controller to surveil 1, and for three loyalty, they allow their controller to draw a card. Be warned, though, that this is far from the limit of Jace's power...

Customising Jace

The 2 MTG Reality Fracture Cards Way of the Pyromancer and Way of the Cryomancer.

Reality Fracture contains a cycle of enchantments that further enhance Jace. Each of these enchantments corresponds to one of the first five Planeswalkers introduced to the game back in Lorwyn in 2007, or to one of their parallel universe counterparts.

Not only do these enchantments empower Jace when they enter play, but they also grant all Planeswalkers that you control an additional ability.

Currently, two cards from this cycle have been revealed. Way of the Pyromancer grants all of your Planeswalkers the ability to generate red mana, while Way of the Cryomancer allows your Planeswalkers to duplicate the next spell that you cast.

These cards not only power up any Jace tokens that you control, but also all of your other Planeswalkers, providing massive benefits to 'superfriends decks' that are loaded up with plane travelling pals.

We've also seen a selection of other cards that synergise with Jace, and other multiversal travellers...

Breaking Limits

Three Cards that interact with the Empower Jace mechanic from the upcoming MTG Reality Fracture set.

The latest wave of Reality Fracture spoilers contains several key cards that will ignite the spark of any avid planeswalker player.

Loyal Tutor is a one mana spell that can grab any planeswalker from your library and place them on top of your deck. Many other card types have tutor effects like this, so it's only fair that Planeswalkers finally got their turn.

Jace's Machinations allows the loyalty ability of Jace planeswalkers that you control to be activated during other player's turns and Empowers Jace 8. In other words, your opponents aren't going to be safe from your planeswalkers no matter what.

Finally, Avatar of Burgeoning Echoes empowers Jace twice whenever you play a land, and grants a powerful ultimate ability to all of your planeswalkers. By paying 10 loyalty counters, you can give a creature a number of +1/+1 counters equal to the number of lands that you control.
