MTG Foundations Commander Decks are launching on October 2nd, the same day that the new expansion Reality Fracture releases. These decks are designed to serve as an entry point to the game's Commander format for new players looking to get into the most popular way of experiencing Magic: the Gathering.

Each of the decks is playable right out of the box, and features a pre planned strategy to work towards. There are five decks, and each of them incorporates one of Magic's five colours, showing off all of the tools which that colour can draw upon to seize victory.

Let's explore the five Foundations Commander decks, and see what they each have to offer.

Calling All Angels features a heavenly host of angels, commanded by the celestial hero Giada, Font of Hopes. It's what's known as a 'typal deck', meaning that it's about putting together as many creatures of a single type as possible and using the synergistic strategies binding them together to secure a win.

Expect to fill the sky with fliers, while also gaining a lot of life and placing plenty of +1/+1 counters on your creatures thanks to Giada's effect.

Key Cards

Starnheim Aspirant - The strongest creatures in this deck like Reya Dawnbringer and Herald of Eternal Dawn cost quite a bit of mana. Starnheim Aspirant plays a vital role in discounting them, so you can secure the power that you'll need to end the game several turns earlier.

Vanquisher's Banner - Since this is a typal deck, you'll need cards that reward you as you begin to assemble your army of angels. Vanquisher's Banner grants each of your angels +1/+1 and draws you a card whenever you play one. This has the advantage of suring up your ability to secure card advantage, which is typically one of white's weaknesses.

Swords to Plowshares - The best creature removal spell in the game, bar none. Every Commander deck with white in its colour identity benefits from running a copy of Swords To Plowshares, since it can exile any creature for only one mana. Wizards of the Coast made the right call including this staple here.

Keen Engineering succeeds at the two things that blue does best: generating artifacts and drawing cards. The Commander, Sai, Master Thopterist creates 1/1 flying thopter artifact creature tokens whenever you cast an artifact, and can also sacrifice artifacts in order to draw cards.

Keen Engineering allows you to set up an engine and then draw your way to victory. You'll eventually overpower your opponents, either with formidable artifact creatures, or by crushing them beneath the weight of the card advantage that you can generate.

Key Cards

Vedalken Archmage - This card is simple, but undeniably powerful. It draws you a card whenever you cast an artifact spell. Since the majority of spells in this deck are artifacts, you'll be getting a lot of value out of this efficient blue wizard.

Misleading Signpost - Mana rocks are artifacts that can be tapped down to help you cast other cards. The best mana rocks also provide some extra utility to set them apart from their peers. In the cast of Misleading Signpost, you can redirect an attack coming towards you so that it slams into an opponent instead. This can take a potentially lethal situation and make it into another player's problem instead.

Forsaken Monument - The package of bonuses provided by Forsaken Monument demonstrate why it's a card worth revering. Not only does it provide lifegain whenever you cast a colourless spell (and in an artifact deck you have plenty of colourless cards available), but it also grants all of your colourless creatures +2/+2 and makes all of your sources of colourless mana generate twice as much. Sol Ring is already great, and a Sol Ring that generates four mana is even better.

Wretched Ranks is a zombie typal deck that will have you constantly reanimating dead creatures from your graveyard to serve you once again. Ghoulcaller Gisa is the commander, and she can break down any creature that you control into a host of 2/2 zombie tokens.

Wretched Ranks offers a versatile game plan that should appeal to any aspiring necromancer. You can build up an overwhelming army of the undead, or you can sacrifice your mindless zombi thralls to other card effects in the pursuit of greater power.

Key Cards

Graveborn Muse - Graveborn Muse is a card advantage machine that takes the form of a zombified spirit. At the cost of a sliver of life, you'll draw X cards each turn, where X is the number of zombies you control, and given how rapidly this deck can churn out undead, that will add up quickly. Games are often decided by who can draw the most cards, so this muse will lead you onwards towards victory.

Endless Ranks of the Dead - Zombies don't travel solo or in pairs, they wander the land in massive hordes. Endless Ranks of the Dead helps you build up your own zombie army, creating a number of zombie tokens every single turn equal to half the number of zombies that you already control. This means that your board will grow exponentially until another play is forced to step in to stop you.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Gray Merchant of Asphodel or 'Gary' is one of the most famous black creatures in the game. It causes every opponent to lose life equal to the number of black mana pips on permanents that you control, and for you to gain that much life. Once you've built up a big enough board, you can play Gary to close out the game.

Dragons are perhaps the most famous creatures in all of fantasy fiction. With the Reign of Dragons Foundations Commander Deck, you can show your opponents how these flying firebreathers earned their fearsome reputation. Lathliss, Dragon Queen allows you to double up on dragons by creating 5/5 dragon tokens whenever you cast a dragon spell, letting you command quantity as well as quality.

Reign of Dragons not only features a ferocious selection of dragons, but also plenty of powerful burn spells to wipe out the opposition as any good red deck should.

Key Cards

Utvara Hellkite - Utvara Hellkite may just be the strongest dragon in a deck that's fully loaded with scaly, flamespewing powerhouses. Whenever a dragon you control attacks, Utvara Hellkite puts a 6/6 flying dragon token onto the battlefield. These tokens can then attack as well, triggering Utvara Hellkite's ability and spawning even more dragons until the sky is clouded with ash, flame, and smoke.

Dragon Tempest - Not only does Dragon Tempest give all your dragons haste, enabling them to attack as soon as they enter play, but it also causes them to deal a burst of damage as soon as they come onto the battlefield. Red is good at accelerating games, and cards like Dragon Tempest are exactly why.

Herald's Horn - Announce the coming of your dragons by blowing into this massive horn. Not only does Herald's Horn make every dragon that you cast one mana cheaper, but it also lets you add dragons on top of your deck to your hand, ensuring that you have a constant cavalcade of them at the ready.

Tramplesaurus Rex is an archetypal green stompy deck that shows off the mightiest threats that are available in Magic: the Gathering's most creature focussed color. The commander, Ghalta, Primal Hunger, has a huge 12/12 statline and can be cast at an incredible discount if you've got any high power creatures in play.

This deck will have you trampling over the opposition, as you dominate every combat phase with the biggest creatures on the table.

Key Cards

Surrak and Goreclaw - This dynamic team up between a bear and a khan offers plenty of power, and also pumps up every future creature that you play. The effect of Surrak and Goreclaw grants every creature that you control trample, haste, and places a +1/+1 counter on them. That Gigantosaurus, buried deep in your deck, will come out even stronger with support from Surrak and his bear pal.

Birds of Paradise - A deck can't be composed purely of massive creatures, you need some early game plays to help build up to them. Ramp creatures like Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Birds of Paradise help pave the way for your big threats by pitching in a bit of mana when you tap them down.

Ezuri's Predation - You won't find many board wipes in green. Effects that destroy creatures en masse like Wrath of God, and The Meathook Massacre typically appear in other colours. Ezuri's Predation is the exception that proves the rule. It Generates a horde of 4/4 beasts, and smashes them into each of your opponents' creatures. This is a very green way of controlling the board.

The Foundations of Things To Come

If you're a new player, then these Foundations Commander decks offer a fantastic entry point into the Commander format, and the social side of Magic: the Gathering. If you're an invested player, then they've also got plenty to offer, with a selection of powerful staples tucked inside. Either way, you can pick them up to try out some slick monocolour gameplay.
