Liliana Vess may have lost her spark during the war against the Phyrexians in March of the Machine, but she was still one of the very first Planeswalkers in the game, introduced in the set Lorwyn way back in 2007. Liliana has always proven that even characters who use dark magic can still be moral people, and her monowhite counterpart has taken up the healing arts rather than necromancy.

For only a single white mana, Liliana the Faultless provides a point of life gain whenever her controller plays a creature or a planeswalker. Not only that, but she can also provide a protection effect, by discarding a card, paying one mana, and tapping Liliana down, she can make one of her controller's creatures untargetable by opponents until the end of the turn, saving them from removal.

Then, for one black mana and one mana of any colour, there's Liliana the Repentant, who's able to raise the dead in classic Liliana fashion. This card combines a milling effect, whenever any creature or planeswalkers get played, with an activated ability that brings any creature or planeswalker in the graveyard straight into play. These abilities synergise together beautifully, with the first loading up the graveyard with powerful tools, and the second retrieving them and bringing them right onto the battlefield.

Garruk is the greatest hunter in the MTG multiverse, who travels from plane to plane both summoning and battling beasts. He spent several years under a curse inflicted upon him by a sinister artifact called the Chain Veil, but not his alternative universe counterpart, who is instead the master of the veil rather than its victim.

Garruk Veiled Butcher exiles other players' creatures when they die, preventing them from going to the graveyard where they might be reanimated later. The card's +2 ability reduces the stats of a creature by -4/-1. Its -2 ability forces every player to sacrifice a creature, but compensates its controller by creating a 4/4 green beast token if they ended up sacrificing one of their own. Finally, Garruk's -3 forces each opponent to discard two cards, and then generates some card advantage if they don't discard nonland cards. Garruk Veiled Butcher can be a targeted debuff, a sacrifice effect, and a discard effect all in one card.

Unlike the Veiled Butcher, who tears the opponent down, Garruk, Curse Breaker instead builds his controller up. His static ability draws a card whenever his controller plays a creature with power 4 or greater, this is a subtle homage to the effect of the enchantment Garruk's Uprising, which draws cards under the same circumstances. Garruk can also untap lands, create 4/4 beast tokens, and provide an overrun effect, giving a green player all the tools that they need to go on the offensive.

Chandra spent her early life as a rebel, living in defiance of the Consulate, the tyrannical government of the plane of Kaladesh where she grew up. Rather than resisting the Consulate, her Echoverse counterpart instead sided with them and became one of their top enforcers, and makes use of chilling ice magic rather than the roaring flames of her prime timeline counterpart.

Chandra, Torch of Defiance is actually a reprint of one of the most powerful versions of Chandra in the history of MTG. First printed in the set Kaladesh back in 2016, Chandra, Torch of Defiance later became the central card of Signature Spellbook Chandra. Chandra, Chill of Compliance seems to have been deliberately constructed as a direct parallel to her counterpart from a decade ago.

The first +1 ability of both cards provides conditional card advantage. Torch of Defiance exiles a card from the top of the deck, and allows it to be cast for a single turn, while Chill of Compliance surveils a card, and then adds it from the graveyard to the hand if it's a noncreature spell. Both then have a second +1 ability which generates mana of their colour.

Chandra, Torch of Defiance possesses a burn effect for her -3 that deals four damage to a creature. Since direct damage spells aren't in blue's slice of the colour pie, and since Chandra, Chill of Compliance is an ice mage and not a fire mage, she instead possesses a -x ability that stuns x target creatures or artifacts, thematically freezing them in place. Finally, both of them have an ultimate ability that provides a colour appropriate pay off for slinging spells, Chandra, Torch of Defiance deals 5 damage every time her controller casts a spell, while Chill of Defiance draws them a card.

Whether you get the rebellious version of Chandra or her law enforcing counterpart, they're both certain to shake up the board state through the power of either fire or ice.

But what about Jace himself? As the mastermind behind all of all of this reality bending chaos, Jace doesn't have an Echoverse counterpart (or at least not one that has currently been revealed). There's just the lone card, The Theorist, Jace Beleren. 

Being by himself won't slow Jace down, though, as he's an absolute card advantage machine. The strongest aspect of this card is its static ability, which ensures that so long as Jace is alive, his controller draws a card during each opponent's draw step.

Because of the power of this effect, you'll want to ensure that you keep Jace safe, so that you can continue drawing cards turn after turn. Fortunately, Jace's other abilities all help achieve this objective. Jace's +1 ability creates a 1/1 Illusion creature token that can dive into the path of creatures attempting to attack its creator. Jace's -2 returns an artifact or creature under each opponent's control to their hand, preventing them from using those creatures to attack him. Finally, Jace's ultimate draws three cards, and then places a number of +1/+1 counters on every creature under his owner's control equal to the number of cards in their hand. If you've had Jace in play for long enough to get this ultimate off, then you're effectively guaranteed to have a pretty full hand, and thus to be able to buff up the stats of your creatures to some pretty incredible heights.

This card demonstrates why Jace is going to be such a formidable antagonist during Reality Fracture.

Reality Fracture releases in October, but it's available to pre-order right now. We've only seen a glimpse of it so far, so who knows how many other ways it will warp the characters of Magic: the Gathering by the time it comes out.
