MTG Secret Lair: The PlayStation Superdrop - Last of Us & Uncharted

The latest Secret Lair MTG crossover with Playstation features three drops, all with new-to-Magic unique cards based on beloved Playstation IPs The Last of Us and Uncharted. All three are available on Magic Madhouse.

Secret Lair x The Last of Us Part 1

As the name implies, The Last of Us Part 1 is about the first game – the incredible journey that Ellie and Joel take together, with the two protagonists reimagined as legendary Magic: The Gathering creatures. There are also two reprints with new The Last of Us art (Cabal Ritual as ‘Cordyceps Excision’ and Haunted One), and a Cordyceps Infected Token.

Let’s look at the cards in more detail:

• Ellie, Brick Master – Ellie is a new-to-Magic legendary creature, which means she’s also a new Commander option. She wants to attack, and also makes creature tokens, meaning she works well with token-synergies and sacrifice. I love the flavour here – just like in the game, she throws a brick to create a noise and draws one of the infected close-by! She also has ‘partner’, meaning in the Commander format she can team with our next card in a Jund (Black, Red, Green) deck
• Joel, Resolute Survivor – another new Magic card, Joel wants creature tokens to die, both making him stronger and drawing a card (although limited to one per turn). It’s clear Joel and Ellie are meant to come as a pair – she provides the tokens, he wants them to die. All that’s needed is a few token sacrifice cards and you’ve got a deck! We’ll come onto this later, but they can also pair with the Part II drops too
• Haunted One and Cordyceps Excision (Cabal Ritual) both feature as reprints, with Haunted One really synergising well with Ellie and Joel wanting to attack, and being a great flavour choice alluding to Joel’s past. Cordyceps Excision on the other hand focuses on one the game’s most iconic scenes
• Bonus card – Wild Growth. Secret Lair’s tend to have secret bonus cards, and this is no exception. The Secret Lair MTG drop features a reskinned Wild Growth depicting Ellie and Joel feeding a giraffe, a beloved scene from the game

The PlayStation Superdrop Secret Lair – The Last of Us Part I is available in Non-Foil and Rainbow Foil editions, with the foil version being the perfect choice for collectors.

Secret Lair x The Last of Us Part I contains Ellie, Brick Master and Joel, Resolute Survivor — two new-to-Magic legendary creatures with Partner, available in Non-Foil and Rainbow Foil from Magic Madhouse.

Secret Lair x The Last of Us Part II

I thought The Last of Us Part II was a masterpiece of a game, and the cards featured within this drop do a great job of reflecting the conflict between Abby (a new character) and Ellie, and the death of a character I won’t name here. They also continue the Jund theme, meaning you can interchange them as partner commanders as you like.

• Abby, Merciless Soldier – Merciless indeed! Abby has a really interesting design, helping to create zombie tokens, but also letting an opponent take control of her, which, just like the game, reflects the conflict between the characters. A token is also included in the drop
• Ellie, Vengeful Hunter – Ellie has changed, adding black mana to her colour identity. Again she plays into the token/sacrifice theme, and also can give herself indestructible to show her resilience. The partner mechanic means you can run both Ellies together if you like, showing the same character but in different stages of their journey
• Ellie’s Rage (Dictate of Erebos) and Cordyceps Rat King (Mycoloth) again are reprints included that continue the Jund aristocrats theme but with The Last of Us flavour
• Bonus card – Unleash Fury, reskinned with Abby surrounded by flames.

The drop is available in Non-Foil and Rainbow Foil editions, and pairs perfectly with the Part 1 drop thanks to the partner mechanic.

Secret Lair x The Last of Us Part II features Abby, Merciless Soldier and Ellie, Vengeful Hunter — both new-to-Magic with Partner — plus reskinned versions of Dictate of Erebos and Mycoloth, available from Magic Madhouse.

Secret Lair x Uncharted

Uncharted is all about the adventures of the wisecracking treasure hunter Nathan Drake, now a legendary creature you can run as your Commander. Let’s see what’s in this drop

• Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter – Nathan is a real thief, exiling cards from each player's libraries (as if he’s going in search of treasure) and allowing you to spend mana as if it were any colour in order to cast them. A very fun and flavorful new Grixis legend to try out
• Kings Bay Clock Tower (Midnight Clock) – one of my favourite cards, Midnight Clock is a fantastic mana rock for blue decks, which later draws a load of cards
• El Dorado Sarcophagus (Whip of Erebos) – a huge player in Standard in its day, the whip is a fantastic reanimation engine that works especially well when bringing back creatures with ‘enters’ effects.
• Chain Reaction – a solid reprint, and a solid red ‘wrath’, reskinned to feature Nathan
• Passionate Archaeologist – another reskin, featuring Chloe Frazer, which synergies nicely with Nathan’s ‘play from exile’ ability

This is a really popular Secret Lair MTG, even causing a price spike in Thieving Varmint which is a perfect ramp card for Nathan. Uncharted fans, this just goes to show what a cool MTG card Nathan Drake is!

Are the PlayStation Superdrop Secret Lair cards legal in Commander?

Yes, all new-to-Magic cards from the PlayStation Superdrop (Ellie, Joel, Abby, Nathan Drake) are legal in Commander (EDH) and all Eternal formats. They are printed with a Magic back and are tournament-legal.

What is the difference between Non-Foil and Rainbow Foil Secret Lair editions?

Non-Foil editions feature the full alternate art without any foil treatment. Rainbow Foil editions use Wizards of the Coast's prismatic holographic foiling across the full card art, the premium collector's choice. Both contain identical cards.

Can I use The Last of Us Part I and Part II cards together?

Yes, and that's the point! The Partner mechanic on both drops means any two Partner-bearing cards can serve as co-commanders. Joel (Part I) can partner with Abby (Part II), and Ellie, Brick Master (Part I) can partner with Ellie, Vengeful Hunter (Part II). You can have all of them in your deck and mix up which two you want as your commanders.

What is a Secret Lair drop?
