The November 13th release of the Magic: the Gathering Star Trek set is approaching at warp speed. Like every new set, Star Trek features unique new art treatments for cards, showing off the unique style of the iconic science fiction show.
Here's a breakdown of the wide variety of different artistic offerings presented by the upcoming Star Trek expansion.
Stardates cards are reprints of powerful Magic: the Gathering cards like Bristly Bill, Spine Sower, Phyrexian Tower, and Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain. These Stardates cards are borderless and flavoured as alternative versions of classic Star Trek characters, such as those from the rebooted films.
Stardates cards appear in both play and collector boosters.
The Library Computer Access and Retrieval System, or 'LCARS', is the operating system used by Federation Starships. The retro futuristic UI of the LCARS system has now made its way onto Magic cards. Not only can you get instants, sorceries, enchantments, artifacts, and creatures with frames that look like you're researching them on an LCARS computer, but you can also get full art LCARS shock lands to take your Stomping Grounds and Sacred Foundries into space.
LCARS cards can be found in both play and collector boosters.
A good Starfleet captain needs to know their ship inside and out. With these schematic cards, you'll be able to see the inner workings of eight iconic Star Trek ships like never before.
Schematics cards appear exclusively in Star Trek Beam Up Bundles.
Classic Enterprise Cards
Classic Enterprise cards are designed to pay homage to a line of vintage Star Trek posters from the 1960s. Every Classic Enterprise card features a spell, artifact, or creature from the Star Trek set with a nostalgic two tone colour scheme.
Classic Enterprise cards appear in both play and collector boosters.
Scene cards are now a regular feature of just about every Magic: the Gathering expansion. These artistic cards form a panorama when you line them up together.
The Star Trek set contains four different scenes that you can create with your cards...
Deep Space Find is a nine card arrangement showing a chaotic day unfolding on the Deep Space Nine station, with art drawn by Marija Tiurina.
Showdown at Sector 001 contains four cards showing a Next Generation face off between Data and Locutus of the Borg.
Mirror Mirror features six cards depicting a famous moment from the original Star Trek series where the crew of the Starship Enterprise face off against their villainous counterparts from the mirror universe.
Unimatrix Zero is a uniquely arranged scene, featuring two columns of three cards each arranged side by side. This foreboding scene is named after an iconic two part episode in Star Trek: Voyager where Captain Kathryn Janeway and her crew face off against the Borg.
Scene cards can be found in both play and collector boosters.
The Klingon language from Star Trek is more than just a work of fiction. It's a fully constructed fictional language that is spoken by a small selection of ardent adherants around the world. Because of this, the designers at Wizards of the Coast have decided to print a run of cards written in the language of this proud warrior people.
Two varieties of Klingon cards are available: Klingon Frame cards, and Klingon Script cards. The former have a warlike red frame displaying the insignia of the Klingon Empire. The latter have the same red frame, but all of their text is written in the Klingon language. Klingon Frame cards are available in both play and collector boosters, while Klingon Script cards are exclusive to collector boosters.
Land Treatments
As well as the LCARS lands, mentioned above, three different land treatments are available for players cracking open Star Trek packs. Many of the new lands introduced in the set have borderless variants available for players looking to ensure that their decks are full of cards that can cross the final frontier with no borders in sight.
Basic lands, meanwhile, are available with both Holodeck and Away Team treatments. Both of these art variants are full art, the former shows lands representing different eras of history conjured using a Starfleet holodeck, while the later present wild and beautiful worlds ready to be explored.
Each of these land variants can be found in both play and collector boosters.
Signed Headliner Cards
Signed Headliner cards are the rarest offering in galaxy, with fewer than 250 copies of each card out there. These headliner cards have all been signed by the actors who played the characters shown in the card's artwork. If you've ever wanted to get William Shatner, or LeVar Burton's signature, then these cards make that possible.
Signed Headliner cards are exclusive to Collector Boosters, and there are only a small number of them to be found.
Truly Cosmic Art
The universe is a vast and beautiful tapestry featuring artwork of all kinds. MTG's Star Trek set presents several interstellar art styles unlike anything that has featured in the game before.
