In short: MTG The Hobbit is a standalone Universes Beyond set releasing on 14 August 2026, with Prerelease Events running 7 to 13 August and a Gift Bundle following on 4 September. Unlike other Universes Beyond sets, The Hobbit will be Standard-legal. The headline chase card is a "Gleaming Gold" version of Smaug the Magnificent, with only around 500 copies printed, exclusively in English and only found in Collector Boosters.

Spoiled cards and mechanics so far:

  • Smaug the Magnificent: A 4/3 flying and haste dragon for four mana that creates a treasure token every turn and deals damage equal to the number of treasures you control when it attacks.
  • Bilbo, Luckweaver: A mono-blue Adventure card whose Burglar's Plot side swaps two nonland permanents.
  • Other characters: Thorin Mountain-king, plus the trolls Tom, Bert and William.
  • Riddles in the Dark: A Fact or Fiction-style card representing Bilbo and Gollum's riddle game.

Products include Play Booster Boxes, Collector Booster Boxes, the Draft Night Kit, the Gift Bundle, and Scene Boxes, but no Commander precons.

MTG The Hobbit spoiler Highlights: Chase Cards & Characters

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth gives us a good idea of what to expect in the set as a whole, as do the early spoilers of course.

All the iconic characters are going to feature, reimagined into the world of Magic: The Gathering for the set. The ‘headliner’ card of MTG The Hobbit has been revealed, and there was only one choice. It’s a ‘gleaming gold’ version of Smaug the Magnificent. There are approximately 500 gleaming gold Smaug, the Magnificent headliner cards printed, so they are ‘precious’ indeed! They will only be found in Collector Boosters of any language, but always in English.

As for the card itself, Smaug is a 4/3 flying and haste dragon for four mana that creates a treasure token every turn, and deals damage when it attacks to any target equal to the number of treasures you control. A brilliant option in any aggressive/midrange red deck, or those with treasure synergies, and a very fun mono-red commander option. I would have maybe expected Smaug to be a little bigger in terms of his stats, but hey, it’s clearly a very competitive card that will see a lot of play.

We’ve also seen a MTG The Hobbit Spoiler of the story’s hero, Bilbo Baggins, in Bilbo, Luckweaver. This version of Bilbo is mono blue with adventure. The adventure side – Burglar’s Plot – swaps two nonland permanents, and could reference either his trickery in taking the ring from Gollum or his concealment of the Arkenstone. As a creature, he can’t be blocked, and ‘loots’ when he deals combat damage to a player, showing how he’s able to conceal himself thanks to the ring and fulfill his role as a ‘burglar’.

As with Lord of the Rings, no doubt we’ll see multiple versions of these classic characters.

Other iconic characters from the story we’ve seen so far include the mono-red and equipment-loving Thorin, Mountain-king and Tom, Bert and William, the trolls that argue so long they end up turning to stone in the dawn sunlight!

In terms of mechanics, treasures appear to be a big part of the set, which makes a lot of sense given the emphasis in the story of the gold and other treasures that Smaug is hoarding. There’s an enormous amount of flavour too, with the card ‘Riddles in the Dark’ providing a ‘Fact or Fiction’ style game of bluff for your opponents that represents the game of riddles that Bilbo and Gollum play. We’re going to have a lot of fun bluffing with that one!
