If you’re looking to start collecting some cards, but you can’t tell which of the three would appeal to you most, have no fear. Today, we’re going to break down the differences between the three, so you can figure out which is the right fit for you.
Magic: the Gathering
Magic: the Gathering (or “MTG”) is the world’s very first trading card game. Invented by mathematics professor Richard Garfield back in 1993, MTG is a fantasy game of elves, goblins, zombies, and more battling it out.
Magic is defined by its central mechanic, the “colour pie”. The five colours are the building blocks of Magic, five separate ideologies that inform the game on both a thematic and mechanical level. Some cards are multicoloured, some have no colours at all, but every card is shaped by the colour pie in some way. You might build an aggressive red deck, filled with low cost creatures and fireballs, or you might build a green deck that spends the game ramping up to play massive behemoths during the endgame. Whatever colour or colours you go for, you’ll need to consider their strengths and limitations when constructing your strategy.
Magic is also notable for being a great social game. One of the most popular MTG formats is known as Commander, where groups of players build 100 card decks based around legendary creatures. Commander games have a wild party atmosphere encouraging unconventional strategies and wild swingy plays.
You’ll enjoy Magic: the Gathering if…
- You enjoy building carefully considered decks, with lots of options and possibilities open to you.
- You want a social experience where you can have some fun with a group of friends, building unusual decks and watching them go off.
- You’re a fan of the different franchises that Magic regularly crosses over with, such as Marvel, Avatar: the Last Airbender, The Lord of the Rings, and Final Fantasy.
Pokémon TCG
The Pokémon TCG started back in 1996, but its popularity has exploded in recent years. It’s most popular among collectors thanks to the wide variety of beautifully illustrated full art cards that are available. If you want to build a binder full of unique cards drawn in a variety of different art styles, then you may just want to catch yourself some Pokémon cards.
There’s also a competitive Pokémon scene for players who want to be the very best. In fact, Pokémon is one of the cheapest TCGs to build a tournament viable deck for. Buying the basic art treatments for your cards ensures that you can get them for lower prices, and have a budget friendly, yet viable, strategy ready to roll out.
You’ll enjoy Pokémon if…
- You want to build competitive decks at a low cost for an uncomplicated game.
- You want to collect illustrated full art cards with stylised pictures of colourful monster mascots.
- You’re a fan of the Pokémon anime or the Pokémon video games.
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Yu-Gi-Oh! is the newest of the big three TCGs, releasing internationally in 2002. The game has changed a lot over the course of its life, incrementally adding new mechanics and methods of summoning monsters.
It’s no secret that Yu-Gi-Oh! is a complex game, with a steep learning curve, but if you’re able to break through that threshold and emerge on the other side, you’ll also discover that it’s also incredibly rewarding.
Yu-Gi-Oh! decks are archetype based, and explore an incredibly diverse range of different genres. There are the mecha anime inspired Sky Strikers, the comic book inspired HERO cards, and the Arthurian Noble Knight cards, and that’s all just scratching the surface.
Yu-Gi-Oh! has had several years’ worth of anime adaptations that have encouraged players to Link, Pendulum, XYZ, Synchro, Fusion, and Ritual Summon their monsters. If you’re able to master these different summoning methods and support them with a suite of powerful spell and trap cards, then you’ll be able to cook up some really exciting strategies and compete to become the next King of Games.
You’ll enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh! if…
- You want to play a game with a high skill ceiling that rewards mastery of its intricate systems.
- You’re a fan of archetype based deck building that draws upon larger than life concepts.
- You used to watch the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime when you were younger, and you want to see how the game has grown and developed in the years since.
