Pokémon Announces New LEGO Partnership

In recent years, Pokemon fans have been spoiled with the amount of amazing partnerships and crossovers the Pokemon Company have launched with other brands. We’ve seen everything – from designer Fendi handbags, Fossil watches and Levi’s jeans, to Van Gogh exhibits, McDonald’s Happy Meal toys, Oreo cookies, Hershey’s Kisses, and even a project with Wallace & Gromit creators Aardman for 2027.

However, on 18th March 2025, an announcement was made that trumps them all, because it’s one Pokemon fans have wanted for a long time, but thought would never happen. Pokemon and Lego are finally teaming up to bring us Pokemon Lego sets. Gotta build em all!

Not much has been revealed yet, but here’s everything we know from the official press releases:

What Has Been Revealed So Far

An official line-up of sets and an exact launch date have not yet been revealed. However, we do know for sure that:

• This partnership will last for multiple years, so we can hopefully expect numerous Lego sets.
• The first set should be launched some time in 2026.

Lego’s press release was also accompanied by a video, in which Lego bricks assemble into a Pikachu’s tail. Electric sparks begin to fly, illuminating the Pokemon and Lego logos side-by-side, before the off-screen Lego Pikachu runs away.

The Pokemon license moving to Lego also means that we won’t be seeing any new Mega sets from competitor Mattel, who confirmed that it will no longer be supplying Pokemon products from December 2025.

Why This Collaboration Is Exciting for Fans

The news of this collaboration is particularly exciting because, as stated before, it was a partnership fans never expected to see. Brands like Mega and Nanoblocks were already creating brick sets of Pokemon characters, so it seemed unlikely that Pokemon would allow their competitors to use the license as well.

Although we got some excellent sets from Mega – the Pokedex and moving Pikachu, to name a few – Lego are hands down the leading brand for brick-building sets, and fans couldn’t help but wonder what we’d get if they were the ones producing the products instead.

We won’t have to wonder for long! Lego have proved time and time again that they’re the champions of creativity and innovation, and always work in some elements of what makes a gaming franchise unique. They made their main line of Super Mario sets interactive, encouraging fans to move the Mario character through the environment in a similar way to the games. The Animal Crossing sets are modular and have interchangeable features – paying homage to the customisable options that are so prominent in the games.

For the upcoming Pokemon sets, who knows what Lego will work in to make them different from the Mega sets. We don’t want a replica of the same sets with different bricks, after all!

Regardless of what the first Pokemon Lego set is, the likelihood that fans of one brand are already a fan of the other, and the fact that both brands are extremely collectible, means it’s sure to fly off the shelves.

What Kinds of Products Could Be Coming?

Now that we know we’ll be getting Lego Pokemon sets, the next question on everyone’s mind is what types of sets can we expect? Will we be building life-size Pokemon out of bricks? Re-creating in-game locations like Pokemon Centers or Pokemon Gyms? Decorating our shelves with Lego replicas of items, like Pokeballs, potions and berries?

Considering Mega has already created sets based on some of these ideas, it will be interesting to see what route Lego decides to go down, and what unique element they will bring to their sets.

The official press release on the Pokemon Company website states:

“This new partnership will bring the world of Pokémon to life in entirely new ways, allowing fans to build beloved Pokémon in LEGO brick form.”

From this, it sounds like we might be building classic Pokemon like Pikachu and Eevee out of Lego bricks. However, these sets would need to be far more detailed than their Mega counterparts to avoid disappointment from fans.

Lego and Pokemon also have fans of all ages, so detailed builds for older fans are unlikely to be all we get. Recently, Lego has created multiple sets for Disney characters like Simba and 101 Dalmatians puppies – a cheaper, simple set for younger fans, and a more expensive, complex set for older fans. Perhaps they will approach Pokemon characters in the same way?

We also shouldn’t rule out the possibility of them creating blind-box, collectible sets, like they did for Super Mario and F1. Pokemon has over 1,000 unique characters, so this would be the perfect way to give fans as many as their favourites as possible, while also honouring the spirit of Pokemon TCG cards with the mystery of not knowing which Pokemon you’ll get.

Whatever we get, thanks to the Pikachu tail in the teaser trailer, I think we’d all be shocked if a Lego Pikachu set didn’t appear somewhere down the line!

Gaku Susai, Chief Product and Experience Officer at The Pokémon Company International added: “Working with the best-in-class team at the LEGO Group and seeing their dedication and passion for the project has culminated in an innovative and groundbreaking collaboration that will surprise and delight fans.”

The statements end by highlighting, “The LEGO Group and The Pokémon Company International both have a long history of pushing the boundaries of social play, which is at the core of this partnership. For the first time, the LEGO Group will be bringing the most loved Pokémon to life in a brand-new way, with play experiences that will delight new and existing fans alike.”

With phrases like ‘surprise and delight fans’ and ‘pushing the boundaries of social play, which is at the core of this partnership’,this certainly sounds like we’ll have sets that go beyond just being decorative Pokemon replicas coming our way.
