While Cynthia and its beloved Garchomp partner hold a special place in every Pokémon players, we wanted to take some time to review The Mewtwo ex Box considering it includes an alternative art of Mewtwo ex, the most valuable chase card from the Destined Rivals set just released at the end of May.
What’s Included in the Box?
The design of Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex Box is very similar to the Hop's Zacian ex Box and it includes:
- 1 foil promo card featuring Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex (alternative art of Destined rivals 081 card);
- 1 oversize foil card featuring the same Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex alternative art;
- 1 foil cards featuring Team Rocket's Meowth (Destined Rivals 149, common);
- 1 Team Rocket's Giovanni (Destined Rivals 174, uncommon);
- 1 Polaroid-style photo sticker featuring Mew-two and Giovanni;
- 4 Pokemon TCG booster packs (2 Destined Rivals packs and 2 Older packs including Surging Sparks and Temporal forces);
- A code card to reclaim the same product in Pokemon TCG Live.
Why you need Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex box?
Mewtwo is not only one of the most prominent Gen I Pokémon but it is also the most iconic Team Rocket ally when it comes to Giovanni and Team Rocket. Stemming from this it has to be said that no other Character would have captured the evil spirit of Destined Rivals like Mewtwo so it does not surprise the choice to celebrate him with a alternative art promo card and a special collector box. Unfortunately, the collectible value of this version of Mewtwo is very far from that one of the Special Illustration Rare Mewtwo featured in the main set at least at the time of writing. The two foil cards from the box also do not hold a lot of collectible value but that is overall quite expected considering the Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex box itself was priced just above £20 on Magic Madhouse and that is pretty much the value of the four booster packs (including the two Destined Rivals ones).
From a gameplay point of view, however, Mewtwo is actually a really interesting card, in particular in a Team Rocket-themed deck. “In pursuit of ultimate power and world domination”, Team Rocket is unleashing their more terrifying Pokémons in battle and what is more spectacular than a version of Mewtwo with 280 HP that can use “Erasure Ball” to deal a maximum of 280 damages in a single mighty blow. Both its Health and its attack power are unprecedented for a basic Pokémon although
Mewtwo can only attack if there are at least three other Team Rocket’s Pokémon in play. Moreover, its basic attack only deals 160 damages unless the Player discards 2 Energy cards from any of their other benched Pokémons so that it is important to set-up Mewtwo properly to use its full potential.
Luckily, there are plenty of useful Team Rocket's Pokémons in Destined Rivals that can team-up with Mewtwo. Moreover, there are also a few interesting items and support cards that synergize with this strategy. For example, The Supporter card “Team Rocket's Proton” allows the Player to draw three cards while Team Rocket's Ariana can be used to stock your hand up to 8 cards as far as you only have Team Rocket's Pokémon in play. The uncommon Special Energy “Team Rocket's Energy” will also help to reduce the number of Energies you need to charge-up your Pokémons as it counts as two Dark or Spirit Energies. Last but not least, the stage I evolution of Tarountula, “Team Rocket's Spidops” can use its ability to attach an Energy card to a Pokémon directly from the discard pile. Spicy!
How to get your Mewtwo Ex Box
As mentioned, Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex box released in retail on the 13th of June, alongside the Cynthia's Garchomp ex Premium Collection. Considering its very affordable retail price and the products featured in it, the box pretty much went sold out at most of the retails including Magic Madhouse. If you have not benefited from the pre-order guarantee product order at Magic Madhouse, I strongly recommend to sign-up to be notified when the box becomes available again. Considering we are just around mid of the year it is very likely more stock will be made available and you would not want to miss out on the opportunity to get this amazing box. Perhaps you can also consider to pre-order two copies of the box as you can avoid the shipment costs due to Magic Madhouse promotions while also having a better opportunity to pull the Special Illustration Rare version of Mewtwo from the four packs you can get from these boxes. Obviously chances are pretty low but how cool would it be?
