This September will be the 30th anniversary of the release of the very first set of Pokémon Game Boy games. As part of this celebration, the Pokémon Company is bringing out a special 30th anniversary Pokémon TCG expansion. Very few details about this set are currently known, but today a few new precious scraps of information were revealed. Let's have a sneak peek at the anniversary ahead.
Packs full of pikachus
It has been announced that the set will contain 30 different art treatments of Pikachu, and that every booster is guaranteed to contain one of them, so there'll always be a Pikachu waiting in your pack.
New Full Art Cards
Several new illustration rares from the set have been shown off.
There's a sleepy Lapras taking a nap alongside a Spheal as the morning sun gently rises, a Drifloon floating away from a theme park, a Zorua leaping past the moon, and a Lycanroc squaring up for a fight.
This is just our first glimpse at what's sure to be a spectacular suite of full art cards.
Old Favourites Return
Maybe the single most exciting thing about the 30th Anniversary set is that it will contain a selection of reprints of iconic cards from the past, stamped with a new "30th anniversary" insignia.
Only two of these reprints have been revealed so far, but they're both pretty massive. You'll be able to grab Pikachu and Zekrom GX from the 2019 set Team Up, as well as Base Set Charizard, which is, perhaps, the single most famous card in the game.
Mew and Mewtwo
But it's not just old classics, you'll also be able to get your hands on some exciting new chase cards. Mew and Mewtwo ex are the two frontliners who've been shown off first, with artwork depicting them surrounded by the game's signature energy card symbols.
Mewtwo is the most famous Legendary Pokémon from generation one, and Mew was the first ever Mythical Pokémon, so they're both great choices to represent a set about celebrating the history of the series.
