Pokémon the Trading Card Game is about to finish 2025 in style with the highly anticipated expansion, Mega Evolution Phantasmal Flames, officially coming to the shelves on November 14th. This new expansion follows very closely the release of Mega Evolution in September and it is the second set of the new era in this TCG thus it is bound to have one of most heated release of the year. To raise the temperature even higher, this set includes also an amazing new Mega Charizard X ex card and its related evolution line but let's review Pokémon Phantasmal Flames in detail and what we know so far.
Phantasmal Flames set detail and product line-up
Phantasmal Flames will include cards from the Japanese set “Inferno X” and the Mega Gengar and Mega Diancie decks as well as the two promos from last year’s Starter Deck Generations Special Battle Set, Meowth and Paldean Wooper. In total, Pokémon Phantasmal Flames will then feature more than 120 cards including 6 new Mega EX forms and 4 Pokémon EX cards plus 13 Illustration Rares, 17 Ultra Rare Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, Trainer and Energy cards, and 5 Special illustration rare Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and Supporter cards
All the beautiful cards for this set can be obtained from the usual standard range of products you would expect from a main Pokemon TCG set. This includes, Booster Boxes with 36 Boosters Packs, Booster bundles (6 Packs), Build & Battle Boxes and 1-3 Booster Packs bundles with promos and coins.
However, this set will also feature the Mega Charizard X ex Ultra Premium Collection that will release the same release date as the main set. This Premium Collection will not only include two amazing Promo foil cards and 18 Booster Packs but also tons of amazing Accessories themed around the artwork of the Mega Charizard X ex promo card. A detailed review of this product is available on another blog content on Magic Madhouse if interested.
What are Pokémon Mega Evolutions and why this set is good for you?
In essence, Pokémon Mega Evolutions are the most powerful evolutions of any Pokémon. In the TCG, these cards have usually very powerful attacks and a very high HP value with Mega Venusaur being the toughest of them with its 380 HP. On the other hand, knocking out a Mega Pokémon is worth three prize cards and this is one of the first way to balance these incredibly powerful cards. In addition most of the Mega Pokémon ex can only be played as stage 2 evolutions forcing Players to carefully plan and time their strategy. Mega Pokémon were already introduced in Pokémon the Trading Card Game in the past but the new evolution mechanics and balancing aspects are much simpler than the past ones creating a more engaging gameplay.
Mega Evolution set already included a few Mega Pokémon cards and the upcoming Phantasmal Flames will add six new ones to the list: Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Gengar ex, Mega Lopunny ex, Mega Sharpedo ex, Mega Diance ex, and Mega Heracross ex. It’s clear that the theme of the Mega Evolutions 2 set is focused on Fire and Dark Pokémon with Mega Charizard X ex being the real main character of the set. Charizard is not one of the most iconic and loved Pokémon but its new Mega ex card is a true powerhouse with the ability to do 90 damages for every basic Fire energy discarded across all Player's Pokémon.
Mega Charizard X ex is also one of the coolest Pokémon ever and the artwork of the new cards makes justice to its powerful and daring nature. The Special Illustration Rare card in particular, showing the full evolution line of Charizard X, is likely the most spectacular one and it is destined to be a chase card for all collectors in the set. I would also expect the other Charizard X cards to be on high demand among collector including the Promo version that can only be acquired in the Mega Charizard X ex Ultra Premium Collection that releases in December, right after the main set.
In terms of gameplay, Players will be very pleased by the variety of interesting cards included in this set. Mega Gengar ex, and Mega Diance ex, for example, are very interesting as main attacker for their own deck or to support the Gardevoir ex engine respectively. In both cases, these cards are likely to see a lot of play in particular when the next set will release.
Among the non-mega cards to look for in the deck Zacian and Alcremie are destined to dominate the pre-release events. Zacian is a great attacker for a Basic Pokémon considering he can deal up to 140 damages while Alcremie can deliver a sweet punch of 120 damages (20 for each of the Player Pokémon in play). Toxtricity is another quite strong card in particular in a deck featuring Mega Gengar ex and Mega Sharpedo ex although it can synergize quite well with the Stage 2 Krookodile.
In this last case, Toxtricity can use its ability “Sinister Surge” to charge Krookodile “Hammer In” attach in order to deal 160 damages. Krookodile “Vengeful Fang” can also be a great way to pay back 220 damages to your opponent after they knock off one of your other Pokémon.
It’s highly likely that Krookodile will be included in the prerelease kit as primary attacker. And it’s not a bad option given it can potentially swing for 220 damage. However, as it is always the case in a fast format like prerelease events, it’s better to move quickly with basic Pokemon or stage 1 Pokemon than having to wait until Stage 2 Pokemon come around.
Last but not least, we are also getting some very solid Supporter cards in Pokémon Phantasmal Flames. Blowtorch, for example, will fit perfectly in your Charizard X ex deck as it requires the Player to discard a basic fire energy in order to discard a Pokemon Tool, Special Energy, or Stadium the opponent has in play. This Item is going to also nicely fit into any Ceruledge ex decks considering their engine also requires to discard energy cards.
Firebreather Trainer will also be a good addition to a Charizard Deck being able to get seven basic fire energies straight from the Deck.
Obviously, Phantasmal Flames also provides some interesting tech cards for non-fire type decks. Mega Gardevoir ex and in general Psychic Pokémon decks can put the Item “Wondrous Patch” for example to good use in order to attach an energy from the discard to any of their Pokémon while Dark type deck can use “Grimsley’s Move” to pull a Dark Pokémon from the top seven cards of their decks. Considering Phantasmal Flames adds tons of support to dark type Pokemon, this card is definitely going to see some play although it cannot be played on the first turn.
Phantasmal Flames Release and how to get it
Mega Evolution Phantasmal Flames is scheduled to release on the 14th of November. As usual, players will be able to visit their local game store for pre-release events starting on November 1st to acquire a copy of Phantasmal Flames Build & Battle Box. The pre-release version of these will include four very solid promo cards (Toxtricity, Flygon, Ceruledge and Zacian) with the pre-release logo on it. I am quite pleased by these cards being used in the Build & Battle Box as they are very good cards for all players to have from this set.
Players that are unable to join a pre-release event will still be able to get those cards in the standard Phantasmal Flames Build and Battle decks although they will not have the promo logo on them. In order to secure your copies of these and of any other Phantasmal Flames product, it is always recommended to keep an eye on the pre-order page of Magic Madhouse. Considering the combination of great cards and amazing artwork on this set (and of course the Charizards) it is also important to remind the “Notify me when available” option to make monitoring and ordering these products easier. It also worth checking the singles section of the website to get the latest cards for your deck or those you need to complete you set collection. Happy and fiery hunting to everyone!
