Let's take a look at the five biggest chase cards that have emerged from the darkness of the Pokémon TCG's most haunting expansion yet...
Mega Darkrai ex is the mastermind of all of the chaos unfolding in the Pitch Black expansion. Darkrai's Special Illustration Rare variant is the biggest chase card in the set, and it's easy to see why. The masterfully menacing artwork by AKIRA EGAWA conveys the terrifying presence of the nightmare inducing mythical Pokémon. This eldritch artwork seems like it was ripped straight from a horror movie, and is unusually morbid for a Pokémon card.
Morpeko ex proves that just because you're angry it doesn't mean that you can't be adorable at the same time. Morpeko, the two sided Pokémon, is seen here in 'hangry mode'. It's furiously charging forwards to get its hands on some food that will fill it up and revert it into its calmer 'full belly mode'. There are other Morpeko cards out there that show off its happier side, but if you're looking for pure pint-sized fury, it's hard to beat this angry Special Illustration Rare rodent.
Mega Zeraora ex is a mythical Pokémon initially introduced during the Sun and Moon Era. Its Special Illustration Rare artwork fully embraces an anime aesthetic. You can see it dramatically powering up, as bolts of electricity pulse and crackle around it. Zeraora's shocking display here demonstrates the power of an electric type Pokémon going all out.
Gwynn is a powerful ghost type trainer and a member of the Fist of Justice from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Her Special Illustration Rare artwork depicts her pointing right out of the frame of her card. Just what is she pointing at? A rare Pokémon, a battle unfolding in the distance, the player themself? It's not entierly clear, what is clear though is that Gwynn is one of the most popular cards from Pitch Black, and her Chandelure hat serves as a reminder that Chandelure ex is also a card in this set.
Slowbro has been around ever since the first generation of Pokémon games back in 1996. This relaxed water and psychic type takes life as it comes, and never strains itself too much. Unlike a lot of Illustration Rare cards that attempt to make the Pokémon they depict look either awe-inspiringly strong or incredibly huggable and cute, this Slowbro artwork deliberately attempts to look a little bit goofy. This is an unusual approach, but it definitely fits in with Slowbro's unburdened and unbothered personality.
