Rayquaza Spotlight - Every Card, Set and Rarity Explained

Rayquaza cards reign supreme among Pokemon TCG collectors. This ‘Sky High’ Pokemon has a legendary status and an incredible design, resulting in rare and valuable cards that are commonly the chases of their sets. With one of Rayquaza’s most recent cards – the Rayquaza VMAX alt art – becoming one of the most expensive cards of the modern Pokemon TCG era, it’s no wonder that collectors are looking to the Mega Rayquaza ex Special Illustration Rare (SIR) in the upcoming Delta Reign set with much excitement.

In this Spotlight article, we will guide you through everything you need to know to build a Rayquaza card collection. We’ll walk you through the history of Rayquaza cards through the different TCG eras and let you know which one is the rarest and most valuable. Here are all the different Rayquaza cards that exist and where you can buy Rayquaza cards in the UK.

Who is Rayquaza?

Rayquaza (Pokedex number 384) is part of Hoenn’s legendary trio, and the box mascot for Pokemon Emerald. He had a major role in the Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald games, awakening from his slumber atop Sky Pillar to stop Kyogre and Groudon from fighting during the story’s climax. After, players could make the tricky climb back to the top of Sky Pillar to catch this legendary Pokemon for themselves.

Debuting in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire in Japan in 2002, Rayquaza was designed by Hironobu Yoshida with inspiration appearing to come from the Mesoamerican god Quetzalcoatl’s serpent form. This also directly plays into Rayquaza’s role as ruler of the skies.

In 2014, Rayquaza was given a Mega Evolution in the games Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. This transformation into Mega Rayquaza is achieved by using the unique and iconic move Dragon Ascent. Alongside this, Rayquaza is best known for the moves Extreme Speed and Outrage.

The History of Rayquaza in the Pokemon TCG

What Was the First Rayquaza Card?

The first Rayquaza card in both the Japanese and English sets was the rare Rayquaza ex card from the EX Dragon set. This was released in 2003 in both English and Japan, with the Japanese set being called Rulers of the Heavens.

Rayquaza Cards During the Vintage and Mid Eras

After making his debut in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, and receiving his first card in 2003, Rayquaza went on to feature in many of the EX era TCG sets, including EX Deoxys, EX Emerald, and EX Dragon Frontiers.

His 2005 appearance in EX Deoxys was particularly memorable, as it gave Rayquaza one of the rarest and most iconic cards in the TCG – the Rayquaza gold star. The Rayquaza gold star showcased Rayquaza’s stunning black shiny form, and is a grail for many Rayquaza collectors today. This was the first appearance of shiny Rayquaza in the TCG, but it definitely wouldn’t be the last.

Although Rayquaza was a Hoenn Pokemon, which dominated the EX era, he continued to get cards and promo cards during the Diamond & Pearl, HeartGold & SoulSilver and Black & White eras of the TCG as well. Of particular note are the Rayquaza & Deoxys Legend cards from Undaunted in 2010, another shiny Rayquaza from Call of Legends in 2011, and a full art and a secret rare shiny Rayquaza from Dragons Exalted in 2012.

The XY era of the Pokemon TCG began in 2014, after the introduction of Mega Evolution in the Pokemon X & Y video games in 2013. Rayquaza was one of the lucky Pokemon to receive a Mega Evolution, which was first introduced into the TCG in the 2014 Roaring Skies set. This iconic set had six Rayquazas in it – three of which were Mega Rayquaza cards, including a stunning, ultra rare full art card.

When the Sun & Moon era rolled around in 2016, Rayquaza continued its streak of stunning, rare cards with Shining Rayquaza in the Shining Legends set in 2017, a full art and rainbow Rayquaza GX in Celestial Storm in 2018, and a full art promo card featuring a shiny Rayquaza GX. However, as sought after and revered as these cards were for collectors, they were merely the prelude to what awaited Rayquaza in the Sword & Shield era and beyond.

New Heights for Modern Rayquaza Cards

The Sword & Shield era in 2020 brought the VMAX mechanic to the TCG, which saw Pokemon taking on gigantic forms and larger-than-life artwork in alternate art cards. Although, for a while, Rayquaza’s only card was the amazing rare from 2020’s Vivid Voltage, this all changed with the release of one of the most beloved and iconic sets of the modern TCG.

Evolving Skies launched in August 2021, and gave us six new Rayquaza cards, including one of the top chases of the set. This was quite the achievement, considering most of the other alt art cards in the set were the ever-popular Eeveelutions, but one look at the Rayquaza VMAX alt art card and it’s not hard to see why. The stunning artwork, illustrated by Anesaki Dynamic, depicts a giant Rayquaza snaking his way through mountains topped with trees and ancient ruins.

Evolving Skies also had a beautiful Rayquaza V alt art card showcasing the legendary dragon alongside trainer Zinnia and her Whismur from the Pokemon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire games. Zinnia also made an appearance in the Rayquaza VMAX trainer gallery card from Silver Tempest in 2022.

With no new Rayquaza cards introduced in the Scarlet & Violet era, and only one Rayquaza card having been released so far in the Mega Evolution era (a regular rare from Ascended Heroes in 2026), we are long overdue for some new Rayquaza cards. And, fortunately, we won’t have to wait long.

A new Mega Evolution set called Delta Reign is due to launch in November 2026, and from what we’ve seen from the Japanese version, Storm Emeralda, we know that a Mega Rayquaza SIR and gold card are coming. The Mega Rayquaza ex SIR is illustrated by Kazuki Minami, and is sure to be the chase card of the set after the extreme popularity of the Rayquaza VMAX alt art from Evolving Skies.

With Delta Reign on the horizon, the future of Rayquaza cards is looking bright. We still don’t know what new mechanic the upcoming Pokemon Wind and Waves will bring to the TCG, but with Rayquaza being so popular and commanding so many sought after cards by collectors, we’ll likely see this sky dragon reappearing in future sets as well.

All Rayquaza Cards by Set

Rayquaza currently has 70 unique cards if you include all the sets, secret rares and promo cards, including those that will be released in Delta Reign.

Below is a list of all the different Rayquaza cards that have been released as of November 2026.

Rayquaza Promo Cards

Top 5 Rarest and Most Iconic Rayquaza Cards

1. Rayquaza EX Pokemon Game Show Promo

The rarest Rayquaza card is the Pokemon Game Show Promo. There are only 8 copies of this card in existence, and they were given out during the Pokemon Game Show Mystery Card Battle in 2013 in Japan.

This Mystery Card Battle saw players compete using a 60 card deck with two cards replaced with ‘mystery’ cards from a pack they were given. There were two leagues: one for elementary school aged children and younger, and one for everyone else. Players who achieved three consecutive wins proceeded to the Premier Stage, and then the winners of this stage competed in the Climax Stage. Those who placed 1st to 4th in this stage received a special promo card. For those competing on 17th August, Keldeo was the prize. Those completing on 18th August received the Rayquaza.

Illustrated by Eske Yoshinob, this card has the same artwork as the English Rayquaza EX BW47 promo card, but with the addition of a gold stamp to the bottom right of the artwork that says ‘Pokemon GAME SHOW’. Three of the cards have been PSA graded and exist in their database, but there’s no way of knowing what happened to the other five copies of this card!

2. Rayquaza Gold Star

It’s no surprise to see this card on here. Pokemon Gold Star cards are some of the most expensive and sought-after cards in the TCG, and Rayquaza Gold Star is definitely one of the more popular ones.

Released in 2005 in EX Deoxys, this was one of Rayquaza’s earliest cards, and set quite a high standard for the cards that followed. It was the first of Rayquaza’s cards to feature its striking, black shiny form, and has been followed by six other shiny Rayquazas over the years. With its dynamic art and a high rarity, this card will be the jewel of any Rayquaza fan’s collection.

3. M Rayquaza EX Gold Card

Not to be confused with the upcoming Mega Rayquaza ex gold card from Delta Reign, the M Rayquaza EX gold card is from the XY Ancient Origins set released in 2015. This card was part of a golden trio with Primal Groudon EX and Primal Kyogre EX, and depicts Mega Rayquaza in a stunning full art card with the attack ‘Emerald Break’ written across the art in Japanese.

Only the borders of this card are gold, as was the style in the XY era of the TCG. The art was done by 5ban Graphics, and Rayquaza’s green colour is completed with bursts of yellow and pink.

4. Rayquaza Pokemon Center Skytree Promo

Fun fact: this is the only Pokemon TCG card to feature two Rayquazas on it: one in the card art, and one in the Skytree Pokemon Center logo stamp. This Japanese exclusive promo card was given away to commemorate the opening of the Pokemon Center Skytree, where Rayquaza is the mascot. If customers bought at least five booster packs at any Pokemon Center or the online store in July 2016, they received this card as a freebie. With both a shiny and regular Rayquaza on this card, it’s truly a must have for any Rayquaza collector.

5. Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art

One of the top chase cards from the top set of the modern era, the Rayquaza VMAX alt art from 2021’s Evolving Skies is probably Rayquaza’s most recognisable and iconic card. If not for the legendary Umbreon VMAX alt art, it would probably be considered the best card in the set.

The odds of pulling a VMAX alt art card from Evolving Skies are estimated to be about 1 in 400 packs, and considering there are six different alt art VMAX cards in the set, the odds of specifically pulling Rayquaza are extremely high! With stunning artwork that is only improved by the card’s texturing, it’s no wonder that this card sits as a modern grail on many a collector’s wishlist.

Bonus: Rayquaza Poncho Pikachus

Although not technically a Rayquaza card, we have to give an honorary mention to the two Poncho Pikachu Promos that feature Pikachu dressed as Rayquaza and shiny Rayquaza. Everyone loves the Poncho Pikachu Promos, and the shiny Rayquaza and Rayquaza versions are the third and fourth most expensive, right behind Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y. These stunning cards are illustrated by Kouki Saitou, and are sure to be the bane of Rayquaza fans who want to add all of Rayquaza’s cameo cards to their collection as well.

Is Rayquaza Good in the Current TCG Meta?

Currently, the only English Rayquaza card that is usable in the standard Pokemon TCG scene is the Rayquaza from Ascended Heroes, and this card does not see much competitive play. Although this card has powerful attacks, with only 60 cards per deck, every card must serve a purpose, and Rayquaza’s attacks alone aren’t enough for him to earn a place.

However, players are already abuzz with how the new Mega Rayquaza ex from Delta Reign will shake up the meta. Even now, so soon after his release in Japan, he has jumped into the top two meta decks and is giving long-time favourite Dragapult ex a run for his money.

Mega Rayquaza ex’s ability, which triggers when you play it from your hand to your bench, allows you to look at the top four cards of your deck and attach an energy from among these cards. This is excellent for energy acceleration – always a powerful tool in the TCG – and also helps with the varied energy cost of Mega Rayquaza ex’s attack. For one fire, one lightning and one colourless energy, his attack does 50 damage for each fire and lightning energy attached to all of your Pokemon.

This attack has the potential to do some insane damage, especially when paired with Pokemon like Ethan’s Ho-oh ex, who allows you to attach two fire energy to it with its ability ‘Golden Flame’, and Iono’s Bellibolt ex, who allows you to attach as many lightning energy cards to it as you like with its ‘Electric Streamer’ ability. With the potential to do as much damage as it needs to get a one-hit-ko on your opponent’s Pokemon, the only limiting factor will be how many energy cards you can get into your hand!

Not only is Mega Rayquaza ex an excellent and powerful card, it’s probably the best shot the TCG has had at introducing a new dominant meta deck for quite some time!

Where to Buy Rayquaza Cards in the UK

Rayquaza has never had a common or uncommon card in TCG sets. They have always been non-holo and holo rares or rarer, and most of these cards are found in vintage and mid-era sets. Because of this, non-modern Rayquaza cards can be difficult to find and expensive to purchase. With Delta Reign on the horizon, these prices are likely to only increase as more collectors turn their attention to this legendary sky dragon.

If you want to pull your own Rayquaza cards by opening packs, you’re looking at some expensive sets: Ascended Heroes, Crown Zenith, Silver Tempest, Evolving Skies, Vivid Voltage. Whether you want to try your luck and open sealed Pokemon TCG packs and products from these sets, or just buy the singles for a good price, always ensure you get your Pokemon cards from a trusted seller like Magic Madhouse.

Expensive and popular sets come with the risk of being resealed if you buy from sellers that don’t have a trusted platform. With Magic Madhouse, you won’t need to worry about being sold resealed products, and they are always adding to their selection of single cards available for purchase.

If you’re hoping to get some Delta Reign products when the set is released, Magic Madhouse uses random allocation to fairly sell new sealed products. So make sure you’re signed up to their newsletter, and maybe you’ll get the chance to pull the new Mega Rayquaza ex SIR from a pack yourself!

Recap of Frequently Asked Questions about Rayquaza Cards

How many Rayquaza cards are there in total?

Around 70 if you’re only counting unique artwork.

What was the first Rayquaza card ever released?

The Rayquaza ex card from the English EX Dragon set and the Japanese Rulers of the Heaven set, released in 2003.

What is the rarest Rayquaza card?

The Rayquaza EX Pokemon Game Show Promo, which only has 8 copies in existence!

How can I tell if my Rayquaza card is real?

As a popular, legendary Pokemon with rare and valuable cards, Rayquaza is unfortunately a Pokemon who rarely receives fake cards – especially the Rayquaza VMAX alt art from Evolving Skies.

When buying cards, ensure you always check its texture, colour and font. If the card is an SIR, it should have texture lines shaped to the artwork. Take a look at the back border to make sure it’s the right shade of dark blue, and examine the font of the card for irregularities and spelling errors too.

And, most of all, consider the price you’re paying for the card and who you’re buying it from. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is! Try to buy expensive cards from reputable sellers with good reputations online and within the Pokemon community, like Magic Madhouse.

Are there any Rayquaza promo cards?

Yes, around 15 of them. Take a look at the table above for a list of Rayquaza promo cards.

What’s the difference between Rayquaza EX, V and VMAX cards?

The EX, V and VMAX variations on Pokemon cards usually reflect new mechanics introduced by the most recent games in the TCG. Dynamaxing from Pokemon Sword and Shield was represented by V and VMAX cards, with Rayquaza receiving a gigantic form when VMAXing. EX cards are not linked directly to a specific mechanic, but this usually suggests that a card is more rare and powerful than others within the TCG. As a powerful, legendary Pokemon, Rayquaza has received many EX cards throughout his time in the TCG, and a fair few V and VMAX cards too.

With Delta Reign coming soon and Mega Rayquaza ex poised to take the competitive meta by storm, it’s never been such an exciting time to be a Rayquaza collector. Unfortunately, with the potential interest of both TCG players and collectors, it’s likely that when those new Mega Rayquaza ex cards are released, they will be expensive. However, if Mega Rayquaza ex does indeed become a staple in the meta, then when we get our next speciality set in 2027, there’s a high chance that we’ll see some new Mega Rayquaza ex SIR artwork, just as we got for so many cards in Ascended Heroes this year.

Whether you plan to pull the new Rayquaza cards yourself, or decide to look back at old Rayquaza cards while everyone obsesses over the new, we hope this article will be useful in guiding you through your collecting journey. Open sealed product if you like, but you’re likely to have a cheaper and more successful time collecting Rayquaza if you buy the singles you want. Always make sure you do your research before you buy an expensive Rayquaza card, and trust your gut when an offer seems too good to be true. However you choose to collect, Magic Madhouse is here to share the latest Pokemon TCG news and deliver the newest cards and sets. Good luck with your Delta Reign pre-orders!
