Posted by Magic Madhouse on 30th Jan 2026

Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is about to turn 30 in 2026 and I am pretty excited we are celebrating this anniversary right after the return of one of the game’s most iconic mechanics, Mega Evolution. The last set of this new era in particular, Phantasmal Flames, has been a massive hit and we decided we wanted to start the new year by looking through the Pokémon Phantasmal Flames card list focusing on the best and most impactful cards from the set.

Mega Evolution Phantasmal Flames CARD LIST

In short: The standout cards in Pokémon TCG Phantasmal Flames are the Supporter Dawn, Mega Lopunny ex, Mega Sharpedo ex (paired with Toxtricity), and Mega Gengar ex on the competitive side, with Mega Charizard X ex leading the chase cards and collector demand.

Top picks broken down:

  • Most competitive Supporter: Dawn, which searches a Basic, Stage 1, and Stage 2 in one play, purpose-built for Mega Evolution decks.
  • Biggest hitter: Mega Lopunny ex, delivering a 230-damage bench swing plus a 160-damage sustained attack on any energy.
  • Best combo: Mega Sharpedo ex with Toxtricity's Sinister Surge ability, reaching a 270-damage knockout.
  • Darkness-type engine: Mega Gengar ex's Shadowy Concealment paired with the Grimsley's Move Supporter.
  • Top chase card: Mega Charizard X ex, with a Gold rarity and a Special Illustration Rare illustrated by Danciao.

Phantasmal Flames has a 94-card core set plus 36 secret cards, the smallest Pokémon TCG expansion in years.

Would you try to guess which ones we picked?

What Makes Phantasmal Flames a Must-Watch Set?

Phantasmal Flames arrived on the shelves of all stores in UK right in the mid of November 2025 and it is the second of the Mega Evolution sets. As usual Pokémon Phantasmal Flames card list includes cards from multiple Japanese sets (Mega Gengar & Mega Diancie ex decks and Inferno X).

One of the first aspects that makes this set interesting is that this set only features 94 card in the core set plus 36 secret cards: it is the smallest expansion in years. Smaller sets are much easier to collect in particular if you are aiming for a master set. Most important, with a smaller card set the pull rate usually comes out to be better-than-average, making easier to obtain the set chase cards (Yes, I am looking at you Mega Charizard X ex). This aspect will definitely please players and collectors alike.

The other aspect that makes Phantasmal Flames a must-watch set is a very general artistic style of the set and the good amount of very playable cards featured in it. From a collectability point of view, the design of this set is extremely stylish mixing the fiery intensity of Fire Pokémon with the shadowy, and supernatural of Dark and Psychic Pokémon. Most of these cards, however, are not only beautiful but they have a meaningful impact on the gameplay opening the door to many new strategies and deck ideas.

The Most Competitive Cards in Phantasmal Flames

Right after the release, there have been a few cards from Phantasmal Flames that already started making waves in early deck building discussions. Among these Early Meta Definers, the one we all know very well is “Dawn” that is also one of the strongest cards in the set due to its amazing ability to search the deck for three Pokémon (a Basic, a Stage I and a stage II) to put back into hand: a perfect fit for the new Mega Evolution mechanics!

The second card that has already seen a lot of play is Mega Lopunny ex considering it can deliver a 230-damage hit as soon as it moves from the bench. Lopunny can then keep punching your opponent for 160 damages using any type of energy and therefore can be a nice addition to pretty much any Deck to keep pressure on your opponent while you set-up the pieces for your main strategy.

Looking to the rest of Pokémon Phantasmal Flames card list for cards with high Combo or engine Potential, the first combo that it is worth mentioning is “Mega Sharpedo ex” and “Toxicity”. Toxicity's “Sinister Surge” ability can set Mega Sharpedo ex to deliver 270 damages by searching a Basic Darkness Energy and attaching it to our loved shark together with 2 damage counters. The additional energy and the damage on it are the condition to make Mega Sharpedo ex a bloody predator that can knock-out pretty much any Pokémon in one hit. If you planning to use this combo, you may also want to consider Munkidori in your deck to move three damage counters per turn to any of your opponent’s Pokémon.

“Mega Gengar ex” and “Grimsley’s Move” can also be interesting additions to any Darkness-type deck due to the ability “Shadowy Concealment”, that reduces by one the number of Prize cards taken upon Knocking Out any Darkness-type Pokémon. If you are interested in this approach, Grimsley’s Move is a must have as it can put any Darkness-type Pokémon directly into play (unless of course you are already playing its Gengar's evolution line)

The Biggest Chase Cards & Collector Favourites

Not surprisingly, Charizard X ex is the most chased and expensive card of the set. The golden version of this card is the rarest of the set and it can fetch you around £300 at the time of writing. This price is mainly driven by the scarcity of this card together with the fact the Charizard is a highly beloved character and it also explains why the Special Illustration Rare version of Mega Charizard X ex is the most expensive card of the set selling just below £500. In this case, the price of the card is largely driven by stunning illustration by the artist Danciao that mixes the dark tones of the Mega evolution with the fiery tones of the pre-evolutions.

Among the other Special Illustration Rare cards, it is worth mentioning Dawn, Meowth and Piplup as three of the most beautiful cards of the set. In all cases, the card is beautifully illustrated with the main character taking the centre scene of a very immersive background scene. This is not a new approach but it seems there has been a strong focus to create very immersive scene for the full-art cards of this set. These three cards are also illustrated by some great artists that were really able to picture some of the most evocative scenes we have seen recently.

Personally, I think the Special Illustration Rare of Paldean Wooper also deserves a special mention. The illustration of this card seems to have been taken straight from one of the Pokémon video games and it reminds of travelling from place to place to discover new area while searching for the next Pokémon to catch.

Phantasmal Flames Set – closing thoughts

Looking through the card list of the set, we can easy realize that a number of established decks gained new tools and option in Phantasmal Flames. In some cases, these cards offer new alternatives or a way to boost consistency but in many other cases, the cards newly released are bringing new synergy to old or existing decks making them more interesting and fun to play. From a value perspective, Phantasmal Flames is an amazing set which offers a wide range of set of very good competitive staples and a very good potential for long-term collecting value. Ultimately, this is another set with a gorgeous Charizard card and its value is absolutely guaranteed.

Essentially, whether you are a competitive player, a collector, or both, Phantasmal Flames is a set worth exploring - and Magic Madhouse has everything you need to get started.
