First look at the new Secrets of Strixhaven Commander Decks
Posted by Magic Madhouse on 29th Jan 2026
Strixhaven University is the greatest school for spellcasters in the entire Magic: the Gathering multiverse. We took our first semester of lessons there back in 2021, with the set Strixhaven: School of Mages. Now class is back in session, with the set Secrets of Strixhaven, which is scheduled to release in April of 2026.
Secrets of Strixhaven will feature a selection of five commander decks, one for each of the university's different magical colleges. Here's a breakdown of what we know about each of the decks so far, along with some analysis of what each of the five colleges stands for.

Secrets of Strixhaven will feature a selection of five commander decks, one for each of the university's different magical colleges. Here's a breakdown of what we know about each of the decks so far, along with some analysis of what each of the five colleges stands for.
Lorehold is the college of history, and it's aligned with the colours red and white.
To demonstrate that Lorehold students are dedicated to unearthing the past, the Lorehold Spirit deck is focused on the graveyard. You'll be moving cards into and out of the graveyard to access a variety of beneficial effects.
The deck also cares about spirits . You'll be creating 3/2 spirit tokens and using effects to power them up.
Both of these themes come together in the form of the deck's commander, Quintorius, History Chaser. As the only planeswalker commander in this set, Quintorius offers a suite of useful abilities.
Quintorius has a static ability that generates a 3/2 spirit token each time a creature leaves your graveyard. He can also load up your graveyard using his first loyalty ability, which allows you to discard a card in order to draw and then mill. His second loyalty ability grants all of your spirits double strike and vigilance, making their 3/2 stat lines significantly more threatening.
If you want to try out an unconventional red and white graveyard focussed strategy, then sign up for Lorehold.
Prismari is the college of theatre and the arts. It features both red and blue cards.
In classic red/blue style, the Prismari commander deck has a spellslinger focus. Specifically, it cares about big spells. A prismari student wants to make an explosive impact using the most powerful instants and sorceries out there.
You can see this focus on going big in the form of the Prismari Artistry commander Rootha, Mastering the Moment. At the beginning of combat on your turn, Rootha creates an elemental with flying and haste that has power and toughness equal to the greatest mana value among instants or sorceries that you've cast on that turn.
So if you're looking to cast massive spells and make huge elementals, then Prismari could be the college for you.
Quandrix is the blue and green college of mathematical magic.
True to its numerical nature, the Quandrix Unlimited commander deck cares about both +1/+1 counters and X spells.
You'll be building up a board of pumped up creaturs coated in counters, and pouring all of the mana that your green ramp cards will help you generate into getting as much power out of your X spells as possible.
The commander, Zimone, Infinite Analyst, welds both of these themes together. She makes all of your X spells one mana cheaper for each +1/+1 counter on her, and she gains two +1/+1 counters each time you cast an X spell.
If you want to build decks based around managing resources and collecting counters, then sign yourself up for Quandrix College.
Witherbloom is the college of natural sciences, mixing together botany and biology in a deadly combination. It's a green and black college, emphasising the cycle of life and death in the natural world.
The Witherbloom Pestilence commander deck is a sacrifice deck that also wants to gain life. This continues a theme established during our first trip to Strixhaven through the college's mascot, Pest tokens. 1/1 bugs that grant their controller 1 life whenever they die, making them ideal sacrifice fodder.
Dina, Essence Brewer, the commander of Witherbloom Pestilence, allows you to draw a card the first time that you sacrifice a creature each turn, and can be tapped down to sacrifice a creature in order to gain life and +1/+1 counters equal to the power of the creature you sacrificed.
Witherbloom is the college for any players who are willing to sacrifice their creatures in pursuit of power.
Silverquill mages are the literature students of Strixhaven. and they employ both black and white magic, demonstrating that words have the power both to harm and to heal.
Silverquill Influence is the most political of the five Secrets of Strixhaven Commander decks. You'll be manipulating your opponents into attacking one another, rather than coming after you.
The deck also has an enchantment theme, encouraging you to slot a collection of powerful auras onto your creatures in order to draw out their full potential.
Killian, Decisive Mentor taps your opponents' creatures down and "goads" them whenever you cast an enchantment, forcing them to attack but preventing them from attacking you.
Killian also draws you a card whenever you attack with one or more creatures enchanted by auras.
If you want to control the game by tactically applying auras and forcing your opponents into attacking one another, go with SIlverquill Influence.
