Card Sleeves: What they are and why you want them

In essence, Card Sleeves (or Deck protector sleeves) are small sheaths of soft plastic large enough to fit your MTG cards. A good sleeve for Magic: The Gathering should have a thickness of 120 microns to provide the necessary level of protection while regular playing. Softer sleeves with a thickness between 40 and 90 microns will be OK to protect your cards in storage or for a short events (for example during a Draft tournament) or if you are looking to double sleeve your deck although they may break easily if you are playing intensively.

This of course will not avoid the cards to suffer from sun and temperature damages if you do not store your cards in a suitable space but it will offer the best opportunity to keep your cards as shiny as they were when you pulled them.

Most of the sleeves also have at least one clear side thus you should look out for products made suing Anti-Glare materials. These technologies are designed to elevate the gameplay and the display of your cards by making your cards extra brilliant even when there are exposed to a lot of direct light. This is often a common case when you attend tournaments when having good anti-glare sleeves can make a huge difference both for you and your opponent.

Last but not least, we should talk about the finishing touches on your sleeves. In general, mono-colour sleeves should be preferred when attending competitive events while those with an artwork on them can be perfect for casual events. The main factor to consider is that sleeves can and are likely to suffer some damages while you are playing creating “marks” on them. The marks can be more visible on sleeves with decorations or a complex artwork and they can thus be considered as a way to cheat during the game. In essence, a judge may think you are using “marks” on the sleeves to spot certain cards and forecast when they will pop up. For the same reason, you typically want to ensure your sleeves are fully opaque and you cannot see through them.

The quality of the sleeves and the finish they have will also impact on how easy is to shuffle them. This is actually quite an important aspect to consider in particular knowing how many times your deck will need to be shuffled while playing Magic: The Gathering. Sticky cards will not only affect your gameplay (as the cards you pull will not be really randomized) but they may also lead to accidental cards damages as your shuffling is a bit stuck. Matte and hyper matte sleeves are usually preferable as they results into a smoother shuffling, while glossy sleeves have a tendency to stick together more. Glossy sleeves also accumulate marks faster thus should usually be avoided.

Together with considering all the aspects we mentioned above, you should also consider the importance of a well known brands and to buy from a trusted vendor. In both cases, what you should look for is quality and reliability as these two aspects can provide you a lot of added value. For example, Dragon Shield, Ultra Pro and KMC are very well known brands that offer a large variety of products and a very high quality. Among them, Dragon Shield products are likely the most known ones and the easier to find together with being always my first choice when it comes to TCGs. Dragon Shield Matte products are usually excellent options for any Magic: The Gathering events although some of the colours may be a bit see-through and they should be checked before using them during competitive events.  

KMC can be a great alternative in particular if you are planning to double sleeve your decks as their perfect sleeves are definitely of superior quality. These may be particular interesting to consider in the Commander format as they offer a much higher level of protection to your extremely rare and valuable cards. Having a large double sleeved Commander deck can be however quite challenging due to the increased thickness of the two layers but both KMC and Ultra Pro should provide some good options to obtain the right balance between protection and size of the deck.
