Overview of Scarlet & Violet - Shrouded Fable Set
The newest set from the ever expanding Scarlet & Violet series is an exploration into some of the characters and Pokémon that have not been seen too much before. Pecharunt and the Loyal Three (Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti) are getting their first ex cards, or in Pecharunt’s case, its first ever card!
The initial release information from The Pokémon Company told us that Shrouded Fable will include over 95 cards, including 3 brand new ACE SPEC trainers, 15 Illustration Rare Pokémon, 10 Ultra Rare Pokémon ex, Tera Pokémon ex and Supporter cards, 5 Special Illustration Rare Pokémon and Supporters and 5 Hyper Rare Gold etched cards. That’s a pretty substantial list for a small, half set, which means it’s going to be jam packed with great hits!
As this is a special set, there won’t be any booster boxes, so keep an eye out for Elite Trainer Boxes, all sorts of fantastic collection boxes (we’ll take a look at these shortly), as well as blister packs, mini tins and booster bundles.
Significance of the Ukiyo-e Woodblock Art Style
One of the most exciting things about Shrouded Fable is the Ukiyo-e (often known as Woodblock) art style which some lucky cards are being treated to. Ukiyo-e is a specific art style which originated in Japan and was popularised between the 17th and 19th century. It has a strong cultural significance and it is brilliant to see it being recognised in the Pokémon TCG. There is a good chance that you have seen the Ukiyo-e art style before but just not known what it was called. One of the most famous pieces is called The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and has been depicted with a Gyarados emerging from the wave. I’m sure you will have seen this before. There was also a Japanese exclusive stamp box, which featured cards of Pikachu and Cramorant in this art style and they were a huge hit with collectors and have become very valuable pieces.
There are several lucky promo cards which are getting the Ukiyo-e art style in this set, including Greninja ex, Kingdra ex and Kingambit. Each of these will be available in collection boxes, alongside additional promos and several booster packs. That is going to be the only way to get these cards and they really are the standout cards from this set.
Highlighted Cards and Their Features
Greninja is a huge fan favourite and is getting a special promo card in the set which you can find in the ex Special Collection Boxes. It features the wonderful Ukiyo-e art style and is certain to be a massive hit. Greninja ex is a powerful, 300HP, Stage 2 Pokémon with 2 great attacks for taking down your opponents. Its first attack does 40 damage to 1 of your opponents Pokémon for a single colourless energy. This is excellent for sniping the bench and maybe finishing off something that your opponent has tried to hide in the safety of the bench. Or it can be useful for setting up Greninja’s second attack, Torrential Slash, which does 120 damage for 2 water energy, plus 120 more if the defending Pokémon has any damage counters on them already. So that works out at 240 damage if they have counters on them, maybe even plus the 40 we did in the last turn with Greninja ex, so maybe that’s 280 damage, which is enough to knock out plenty of things in the game!
Greninja ex isn’t the only one getting the special art treatment. Kingdra ex is also lucky enough to have its own special collection box and a card featuring the Ukiyo-e art style. Kingdra is a Stage 2 water type Pokémon with a massive 310HP and it has some pretty phenomenal attacks. For 1 water energy, King's Order allows you to put 3 water type Pokémon from your discard pile onto your bench. That is crazy good! You could get Stage 2’s or Basics or anything that you want, as long as it’s a water type Pokémon. Kingdra’s second attack does 50 damage for each water energy attached to it, which in theory means it can do unlimited damage! Especially if you have a Baxcalibur in play, which will allow you to accelerate as much water energy into play as you have in your hand. I feel that Kingdra ex is going to make a big splash in the competitive scene!
Collector's Appeal and Market Impact
Most of the special sets in Pokémon do not make a huge impact on the game but they do hit well with collectors and I don’t think this one will be too much different. The new Ukiyo-e art cards featuring Greninja, Kingdra and Kingambit will be very popular and I expect they will have great appeal with collectors. I expect the collection boxes to sell out quickly as people try to get their hands on those promo cards. It will also be a great opportunity for fans of the video games to get their first look at Pecharunt in its card form, as well as our first look at Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti with their ex cards. It is a relatively small set as well, which should enhance its collectability as people try to get the master set.
Release Date and Availability
You can get your hands on Scarlet & Violet Shrouded Fable very soon! The first wave of products will be released on 2nd August 2024. This includes the amazing Elite Trainer Boxes, all sorts of different collection boxes, triple blisters and the mini tins. The booster bundles will be released a month later on 6th September 2024. As this set is to be released a couple of weeks before the World Championships, it will of course be legal for Pokémon’s biggest tournament. Is there some secret sauce hidden in this set which is going to break the format and take down World’s? We’ll have to wait and see, won’t we Kingdra!
