Marvel Super Heroes is releasing next Friday. We'll be getting a cavalcade of super powerful new Commanders, as well as a selection of explosive new instants, sorceries, and artifacts that will bring the frantic energy of comic books into the Magic: the Gathering multiverse.
Some cards wear their comic book inspiration a bit more closely on their sleeve than others, though, and when you're tearing through a pack, you may well come across a Marvel Source Material card.
These cards are reprints of classic Magic staples with artwork taken directly from iconic panels in Marvel comic books. They show up in both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, so you may just see one during your next draft.
Here's a selection of five of the most powerful of these comic book inspired cards.
Spells that grant additional Combat Phases are a great way of pushing through extra damage. Seize the Day can grant you multiple extra combat phases in a single turn thanks to its flashback ability. This opens up all sorts of possibilities for cunning players to repeat powerful effects that activate when creatures attack or deal damage, and there are plenty of legendary creatures that can take advantage of this effect.
Storm, Force of Nature grants the next spell that you cast Storm, which means that it will repeat for every spell you've cast prior to it during the turn. Combining this with Seize the Day will grant you a huge number of additional combat phases.
Every time Narset, Enlightened Master attacks, she allows you to cast noncreature spells from among the top cards of your deck for free. The extra combat phases granted by Seize the Day allow Narset another opportunity to dig into your deck for spells.
Finally, Thor Odinson has two instances of prowess, so he'll gain +4/+4 if you cast Seize the Day and flash it back on the same turn. He also has vigilance, meaning he'll still be able to attack even if you use this card's effect to untap another creature.
If you're building a lifegain deck, Archangel of Thune is an incredibly powerful payoff that buffs up your board with +1/+1 counters every time you heal yourself.
It's very easy to use cards like Soul Warden and Aunt May to provide a reliable, recurring source of life gain. By plugging Archangel of Thune into this engine, you'll be increasing its power dramatically and loading your board of small creatures up with +1/+1 counters so that they can grow into powerful threats.
There's a lot of overlap between angel typal and life gain strategies, so you can use Archangel of Thune in a celestial Commander deck led by Lyra Dawnbringer or Giada Font of Hope.
If one of your opponents is comboing off in a Commander game and you need to evacuate to safety, Teferi's Protection is the ultimate eject button.
This card phases every permanent that you control out of play, rendering them untargetable, but preserving their counters and any auras you've attached to them . Teferi's Protection also prevents your life total from changing and grants you protection from everything.
The Marvel variant of this card changes that flavor so that it's the Black Panther T'Challa keeping you safe rather than the time mage Teferi. Yet whichever of the two it is looking out for you, your opponents won't be able to push any damage through.
Heroic Intervention is a recurring bonus sheet staple. It showed up in Spider-Man, it was there for Avatar: the Last Airbender, and now it's returning for Marvel Super Heroes. It even has three different art treatments in this set, showing off a seleciton of different Avengers.
It's easy to see why Heroic Intervention keeps showing up time and again. Green has a lot of single target protection effects, but few spells that can guard their entire board. Heroic Intervention changes all of that, though, and keeps all of your creatures safe by making them both indestructible and hexproof.
If you're playing a green deck, and an opponent attempts to cast a board wipe, Heroic Intervention will make them quickly regret that decision, as your creatures emerge unscathed from the Wrath of God exploding around them.
One of the challenges of bonus sheet reprints is attempting to match up iconic characters from outside of Magic with in-universe characters that can represent them. Cloud Strife, from Final Fantasy, became Najeela, the Blade-Blossom, since they're both powerful sword fighters. The Chameleon from Spider-Man has his artwork splashed over the card Clever Impersonator to show that he's a Master of Disguise. Dauthi Voidwalker has been used here to represent Black Widow. Is it a good match?
Well, the Shadow ability means that Black Widow can't be blocked except by other creatures with Shadow, which demonstrates her covert nature well. She also exiles any cards that would go to the opponent's graveyard, thematically denying them information and resources, which seems appropriate for a spy.
Finally, you're able to sacrifice her in order to play one of the cards that she's exiled, enabling her to steal a threat from an opponent's deck and put it into play under your own control. With the mission done and a key threat stolen, Black Widow vanishes into the shadows.
Dauthi Voidwalker is a powerful card, and in this case, also a flavor homerun.
Cards Straight from the Comics
Of course, these five cards are far from then only notable reprints on the source material sheet. Aggro players will be pleased to see Warleader's Call and Monstrous Rage showing up, while control players will gain access to an Iron Man themed Counterspell.
Once June 26th rolls around, you'll be able to get your hands on these stylised comic book cards, as well as a selection of other comic book heroes and villains to power up your deck with a burst of Marvel flair.
