The Most Valuable Cards from Pokémon Surging Sparks

The Most Valuable Cards from Pokémon Surging Sparks

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 30th Nov 2024

With its 30th Anniversary coming up very quickly, The Pokémon Trading Card Game is experiencing an impressive surging in interest among both players and collectors. As you may have noticed, the most recent sets released in 2025 have been literally flying off the shelves and this does not seems to apply only to highly collectible set like Prismatic Evolutions. In fact, I just read that the demand for the next upcoming sets seem to have already exceeded the shop allocations.

In short: The most valuable cards from Pokémon TCG Surging Sparks (the eighth Scarlet & Violet expansion and one of the largest Pokémon sets ever released, with over 250 cards) are all Special Illustration Rare or Hyper Rare versions of popular Pokémon ex cards.

The top five most valuable cards:

  1. Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rare — the headline chase card, with rainbow stellar borders
  2. Latias ex — part of a two-card connected artwork with Latios ex (SSP 203)
  3. Milotic ex
  4. Pikachu ex Hyper Rare Gold — sits in fourth despite its rarer print run
  5. Hydreigon ex

The set's overall size, combined with 23 Illustration Rares, 11 Special Illustration Rares, and 6 Hyper Rare Gold cards on top of its 191-card core set, is the main driver of its collector appeal.

Disregarding the challenges in getting your hands on some of the newer Booster Packs and to complete our collections, it is definitely great to see so many people getting excited again for a game that has been around for so long. Looking back, I think Surging Sparks Pokémon TCG set was the one that re-ignited the flame in both players and collectors, and with good reasons. The last set of 2024 was in fact not only one of the largest set ever released for this Trading Card Game, but also an expansion filled with beautiful artwork and game-relevant cards. Even after 6 months, we can see a few cards from Surging Sparks among the most expensive Pokémon card in the secondary market, therefore we decided to take a second look to this set to update our list of the most valuable cards from Pokémon Surging Sparks.

Most valuable cards of the Surging Sparks

Latias ex Pokémon card featuring abilities and stats.

As mentioned above, the eighth expansion of Scarlet & Violet, Surging Sparks, is one of the largest sets ever released for this game with more than 250 cards. The full card list includes 23 Illustration Rare cards, 11 Special Illustration Rare and 6 Hyper Rare Gold cards on top of a core set of 191 cards. The overall size of the set and the quantity of the Illustration Rare cards is the main factor driving the collectible value of Surging Sparks. The presence of highly playable cards among the rarest cards of the set is also contributing to this as well as the gorgeous artwork of some of them.

Considering these factors, it does not surprise that the most valuable card of the set is the Special Illustration Rare Pikachu ex. As already pointed our, this version of Ash's partner is not only very rare but it also have a stunning gameplay value and an amazing artwork exalted by the rainbow stellar borders of the card. On top of that, Pikachu IS the most iconic character of the series and a widely loved character making it a chase cards for Players, collectors, and for everyone who loves Pokémon. At the time of writing, this card is still consistently selling around £250 if ungraded while many PSA10 versions of this card have been sold in the last two months in UK for £700-£800.   As you may have noticed, the value of this card dropped only by 20-25% over the last 6 months and there are high chances Pikachu ex SSP 238 value will hold on for quite some time.

The second most expensive card from Surging Sparks, Latias ex, is as playable and beautiful as Pikachu ex, although not as iconic. Latias ex, however, has the added bonus of being part of a 2-cards connected artwork with its sibling Latios ex (SSP 203) that definitely contributes to the value of this card. Once pulled together, the two cards re-create in fact the dance of the two legendary siblings soaring through the skies and that definitely explain why PSA-10 copies of this card have been easily sold for around £500 in March. Considering the extended artwork on this card, having also a copy of Latios ex should eventually help maximize the re-selling value of Latias and this may be a good time to purchase one if you haven't already.

Moving down on the list, Milotic ex, and Hydreigon ex are respectively the third and fifth most valuable cards of the set with the Hyper Rare Gold version of Pikachu ex sitting consistently in forth place. It is quite surprising to see a Gold card placing well behind its Illustration Rare version described above even if this card have the same gameplay value and it should be more difficult to pull. The difference among these two cards is largely the artwork, with one clearly being more appealing to the fans.

How to maximize your cards collectible value

As mentioned above, Surging Sparks, includes a lot of great cards with some of them solidly placed among the most valuable cards of the Scarlet & Violet series. However, considering the set released now more than 6 months ago, players and collectors are now mostly focused on the newer sets of 2025. As a result, this might actually be a very good time to look for any card you are still missing from the set as the price should have sensibly dropped for all of them, including the most valuable ones we mentioned above. In this case, I would like to remind that the higher demand seen recently on Pokemon products also increased the risk of scams and counterfeit product. Using trusted vendors like Magic Madhouse should always be the preferred option to avoid the risks and the disappointment of not getting the cards you were looking for.

When thinking of maximizing the value of your Surging Sparks collection, you should always consider two aspects. The first one, would be the collectible value of having a complete full set including all the cards of the set. A Master set would be even more valuable obviously as it features all 252 cards and all the reverse holos versions of them but the increased size of this set makes even a standard full set quite valuable.

The second aspect to consider is as usual the quality of your cards. We discussed multiple times how protecting your cards with the appropriate sleeves and products is important to ensure their value and we trust you are already doing it. For highly collectible sets like Surging Sparks, you can also consider to have some of the cards from the set graded to increase their value. Very high grades can substantially increase the value of your cards although not all companies are perceived the same way by buyers and choosing the right grading company is important to ensure the maximum reselling value. As I mentioned above, for example, a PSA 10 version of the most valuable cards in Surging Sparks can be sold at two or three times the value of an ungraded card. Most important, the number of graded cards available on the market will always be much lower than the number of non-graded ones.

Obviously, these considerations also apply to any Pokémon set including any of the upcoming ones. Whatever you are playing or collecting, pre-ordering the products you like is usually always the best option to ensure you do not miss out on them and you can benefit from early offers. Magic Madhouse, for example, always offers very competitive pre-ordering discounts and free shipments that are great way to get a good head start. However, once the set releases, keeping an eye on market prices of single cards is the best way to decide which cards you should focus more and how to ensure your collection has the best value in the long run.
