Top Meta Pokémon Cards Removed in the 2025 Rotation

Top Meta Pokémon Cards Removed in the 2025 Rotation

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 12th Jun 2025

Pokémon TCG Rotation is a yearly event that brings both excitement and apprehension to all players. Removing older expansions from the Standard format helps in keeping Pokémon competitive environment healthy and pushes the players to create new decks and new strategies using the most recent releases preventing dominant decks to become to overpowering. On the other hand, the rotation may force players to move away from the decks they love together with the need to purchase more cards among the most recent releases.

As the most recent set rotation came into effect on the 11th of April 2025, we thought it would be of help to all players to have a look to some of the key cards that rotated out. As going through a comprehensive list would take quite a while, we decided to focus this review only on those that had a strong impact on the metagame.

Overview of the 2025 Pokémon TCG Rotation

Starting from the Sword and Shield series, all Pokémon cards show a single letter “regulation marks” on their bottom left corner. This addition makes extremely easy to identify which cards can be legally used in official events and which cards rotated out. In the 2025 Organized Play season, the cards marked with “G” and “H” are the only cards allowed in official events after the 11th of April. This year is even easier to identify the cards that cannot be used as all cards using the regulation mark G were also the first ones printed using the new silver border instead of the classic yellow border.

In detail, the sets leaving the Standard format will include Brilliant Stars, Astral Radiance, Pokemon GO, Lost Origin, Silver Tempest, and Crown Zenith. SWSH Black Star Promos also rotated out while SVP Black Star Promos and 2023 McDonald's Collection cards can still be used.

Key Meta Cards Leaving the Standard Format and their impact

As a result of Pokémon TCG Rotation, we have pretty much seen the end of the V and VSTAR Pokémons including the meta-relevant Lumineon V and Rotom V. Our beloved Radiant Greninja and Radiant Charizard also had to leave our decks together with some other key support cards like PokéStop and Forest Seal Stone.

Among the cards named above, Radiant Greninja is likely the card that will be missed the most in the Standard format. This version of our skilled ninja Pokémon was quite solid offering a consistent way to draw additional cards and providing a good way to attack two opponent Pokémons at the same time. Radiant Greninja has been extremely useful in particular against evolution decks that were forced to include Manaphy to prevent damages to benched Pokémon. Among the decks that used to include Greninja, the one based on Raging Bolt will not be as impacted by the rotation as for example the one featuring Kingdra. Both these decks should likely consider Revavroom “Rumbling Engine” card drawing ability and Mamoswine ex ability to attack benched Pokémons as good substitutes for Greninja, at least for now, although none of them are as versatile as our water ninja Pokémon.

Radiant Charizard is another Radiant Pokémon that we saw a lot last year, in particular as part of Charizard ex Decks. The value of this cards mostly came the fact that Charizard is “a single prize” Pokémon while having 160HP and very strong attacks. This Deck also suffered from the loss of all the V tech cards although in this last case the addition of Pidgeot ex can fill these gaps and allows the Player to find any card they need from the deck. I would also personally expect more support to Charizard decks to come soon as part of the new Partner Pokémon mechanics.

Among the VSTAR Pokémon there will be a few players that will surely miss Lumineon V and Lugia VSTAR. Lumineon V, has been a staple in a variety of decks to improve consistency due to its special ability, “Luminous Sign”, that allows a player to search for any Supporter card once Lumineon is played. Considering Lumineon V itself is also very searchable, the removal of this card will impact a few decks, in particular those using Arven and Forest Seal Stone.

Decks focused around Lugia VSTAR, on the other hand, have been among the biggest contenders in the metagame since the release of Silver Tempest, in particular those that included Archeops and a few Special Energy cards. While “Legacy Energy” released in Twilight Masquerade did not rotate out, removing both Lugia and Archeops will surely limit a lot its use in competitive decks.

Best decks to emerge after 2025 Pokémon Rotation

With respect to previous ones, the Pokémon TCG Rotation in 2025 had much less impact on the meta-game, in particular on Raging Bolt ex and Dragapult ex, two of the three more prominent decks of this season. This is mostly due to the adaptability of these decks and to the presence of a few good alternatives for the cards that have been rotated out.

Raging Bolt ex Deck for example, will not be able to include any more PokéStop and Radiant Greninja but players should be able to compensate by adding Area Zero Underdepths, Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and the new Noctowl evolution line. Ogrepon in particular should be a must in this deck as it synergizes perfectly with Noctowl triggering its ability to search for two Trainer cards and the stadium ability that expands the bench to include 8 Pokémon.

Dragapult ex is another deck that lost a few pieces of its engine including Lumineon V, Rotom V, Forest Seal Stone and Lance, although in this case players have a good set of alternatives that can be included to fill the gaps. The deck can still include for example Arven to help finding key items like Sparkling Crystal, Rescue Board or Technical Machine: Evolution and cards like Budew, Reverse Catcher and Iono to control the game. This deck can also benefit from the new Iono’s Bellibolt ex just released in the “Journey Together” set and its ability “Electro Streamer” to attach any number of electric energy cards from the player's hand to Iono’s Pokémon. This ability matches perfectly with Iono’s Voltorb’s attack, which does 20 damage plus 20 more for each electric energy attached to this Iono’s Pokémon, and the Levincia Trainer-stadium card to move 2 electric energy from the discard pile back to the player's hand. Considering how many cards can exploit the new Partner Pokémon mechanics I would expect this deck to evolve quickly into a “Iono” focused Deck...
