Top MTG Decks Dominating the 2025 Meta – A Strategic Breakdown

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 25th Sep 2025

The Standard format has had a pretty sizeable shake up with Abuelo's Awakening, Cori-Steel Cutter, Heartfire Hero, Hopeless Nightmare, Monstrous Rage, This Town Ain't Big Enough and Up the Beanstalk all biting the dust. With almost everyone one of the format’s former top decks getting hit, let’s take a look at the MTG top decks as we gear up for Edge of Eternities.

The Top Decks

05. Azorius Midrange

Azorious Midrange (or convoke) wants to overload the battlefield with cheap creatures like Spyglass Siren or Novice Inspector and generate tokens that can turn into threats thanks to Zoetic Glyph. Enduring Curiosity turns all the evasive creatures into draw engines to keep your hand stocked and the creatures coming down.

04. Jeskai Aggro

Jeskai Aggro relies on the same creatures as Azorius Midrange, but adding red to incorporate the likes of Gleeful Demolition to turn artifacts (such as the tokens created with Novice Inspector) into three bodies. Knight-Errant of Eos provides value in place of Enduring Curiosity while Imodane’s Recruiter adds tokens while also providing a strong finisher.

03. Boros Prowess

Boros Prowess makes the most of classic – almost iconic – burn spells in the form Lightning Helix and Boros Charm, adding extra power to Prowess creatures such as Monastery Swiftspear and Emberheart Challenger and providing finishers later in the game. Boros Charm does double duty in protecting your board, too.

02. Gruul Prowess

Gruul Prowess is really a mono red deck, but with a few splashes of green for the powerful Questing Druid and Pawpatch Recruit, adding more punch and card advantage. It also unlocks handy sideboard options in Snakeskin Veil to protect creatures and a nice catch all with Pawpatch Formation.

01. Dimir Midrange

Dimir is a clear best deck of the format, with cheap and evasive creatures and efficient removal like Anoint with Affliction, and card draw in Enduring Curiosity. Kaito, Bane of Nightmares, is a great payoff, too.

The Most Played and Successful Cards in 2025’s Top Decks

We’ve looked at the top decks of the format, now let’s take a look at the key cards.

Enduring Curiosity

Enduring Curiosity – inspired by its namesake Curiosity – is a hugely powerful draw engine when paid with the cheap and evasive creatures that Dimir Midrange loves. It’s highly resilient too, with flash allowing you to drop it and the end of your opponent’s turn when they aren’t expecting a hand-refilling combat step from you, plus even if it dies it’ll return as an enchantment. A 4/3 body packs a punch, too.

Mocking Bird

Mocking Bird’s power is in its versatility, appearing in both Azorios and Dimir decks. Copying the best thing on the board, but with flying, can be a gamechanger – either copy your best thing, or theirs! In Azorius, you can keep the value going by copying creatures like Novice Inspector while In Dimir it provides more control elements like Floodpits Drowner.

Sheltered by Ghosts

Utilised by Boros, Azorius and Jeskai decks, Sheltered by Ghosts does double duty, providing more power for your creatures while also removing your opponent’s problem permanents. Life link is a game changer against other aggro decks, especially red.

Monastery Swiftspear

A famous card from previous Standard formats, the power of this little monk is well known. Monastery Swiftspear is a star in Gruul Prowess and Boros Aggro, it’s a huge threat when powered up with cheap pump and burn spells, as well as combat tricks

Format-wide staples – cards to be aware of

While the above cards are the most played in the top decks, there are other staple cards of the format that can find their way into these lists, or other decks you may face.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is a power house featuring often in Dimir, as well as other Golgari and mono black decks. The bulky body, life gain, life drain, and death touch to take down anything, make her a potent addition to midrange and controlling strategies.

Go for the Throat / Cut Down

These cheap removal spells are everywhere, helping keep the aggressive decks in check. Both have restrictions, but take down most of what you need to, so you need to be ready for them. Keeping your creatures low cost and efficient is one way to do so, as is protection spells like Snakeskin Veil. And if you’re expecting endless Cut Downs, you could try outsizing it too with bigger threats like Sheoldred.

Sideboard staples – how to tackle the top decks

When thinking about how to combat the top decks, your sideboard will be vital. Let’s look at some of the top sideboard cards of the format, which players may bring in against you, but you too can use to your advantage.

Ghost Vacuum

Ghost Vacuum is the top graveyard hate deck, and being an artifact it can slot in anywhere. It also takes down resilient threats like Enduring Curiosity.

Torch the Tower

How far we’ve come from Shock. Yes, Torch the Tower cant hit players, but it’s a very powerful 2 damage removal spell for one mana, hitting Planeswalkers as well as creatures, scaling up to a Lightning Bolt if you bargain it. The exile clause is important too, again dealing with creatures like the Enduring cycle

Destroy Evil

Destroy Evil is a scalpel answer to deal with bigger creatures like Sheoldred and pesky enchantments like Sheltered by Ghosts.

Other Formats

As you’d expect, the meta’s for Modern and Commander are much more settled that Standard. Modern is still feeling the huge impact of Modern Horizon’s 3 with cards like Ocelot Pride, Ajani Nacatl Pariah and Plage, Titan of Fire’s fury pushing Boros Energy to the top. Domain Aggro, Blink, Amulet Titan, Energy, Dimir Frog and various Eldrazi decks all comprise the other tier 1 options. Commander remains wide open, with players playing anything and everything, however a trend we can see is the incorporation of fun and powerful new legend choices from Final Fantasy (such as Vivi Ornitier) and Universes Beyond releases, like Sonic the Hedgehog.

In summary

As you’ll see above, Standard right is all about efficiency and value – not many decks are going big or controlling, it’s all about keeping costs low and out valuing your opponent. Whatever MTG top decks you are looking to build Magic Madhouse has you covered, with great deals and fast shipping across both singles and sealed products.
