What to Expect from the Pokémon Mega Evolution Set

The very recent release of Black Bolt & White Flare set marked the end of the Scarlet and Violet era in Pokémon, the Trading Card Game. After enjoying set after set filled with Terrastallized, Ancient/Future and ex Pokémon, it is now time to look forward to a new era. The first set of this cycle, however, will be a bit of a blast from the past as it will bring back the Mega Evolution Pokémons.
Revealed a few months ago during the Japan's Champions League Tournament, Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia sets were released in Japan on the 1st of August and are designed to promote the upcoming new video game of the series, “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” (which launches the 16th of October 2025). The first English set based on the two Japanese ones will instead be released in just a month on the 26th of September and it will be named “Mega Evolution”. Although the name can be confusing at first, this set is expected to be a very exciting start of a new adventure in our beloved TCG and we thought it would be a good idea to summarize what we know so far and what we can expect from the set.
What are the Mega Evolution Pokémon?
As the name suggests, Pokémon Mega Evolution will bring back the possibility for your Pokémons to Mega evolve. This type of form change was first introduced in Pokémon X and Y video games, and is set to reappear in Pokémon Legends: Z-A hence the reason for bringing it back into the TCG too. The last time we actually had this type of card was in 2016 during the XY era.
However, there will be a slight difference on how the new mega evolutions will work. In the past, basic Pokémon were able to mega-evolve directly mirroring the video game where a Pokémon can be infused with Mega Energy in order to transform. To make an example, the basic Venusaur ex was able to mega-evolve into Mega Venusaur ex directly. In the new Mega Evolution set, however, it seems that Pokémons will need to go through their whole evolution line in order to Mega evolve. For example, you will need to progressively go from Ralts to Kirlia and then to Mega Gardevoir ex, instead of going straight from Gardevoir ex to its mega-form. In addition, each Mega Pokémon will reward the opponents with three prizes when knocked off with respect to the two they would have back in 2016.
It is obviously a bit early to define the impact that these changes to the “old” mega-evolution process will have on the game but the new mechanics seem quite interesting. I am also very curious to see which Abilities, Item and Supporter cards will become available in future sets and how they will influence the overall gameplay.
Overview of Mega Evolution set
As mentioned, Pokémon Mega Evolution will be the first core set for the Mega Evolution Series in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and is scheduled to release on the 26th of September. Most of the cards in this set are expected to come from the Japanese “Mega Brave” and “Mega Symphonia” expansions that were released on the 1st of August.
Based on the most recent information, the core set will include 132 cards while the overall set will have 180 cards in total (not including Secret Rares). The set will feature 10 Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, more than 15 Trainer cards, 22 Illustration Rare Pokémon cards, 22 Special Illustration Full art cards, and 10 special illustration rare Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and Supporter cards. For the first time in this expansion Item, Pokémon Tool, and Stadium cards will also be featured as full-art ultra rare cards with “Rare Candy” and “Night Stretcher” being the first two that were revealed for the set.
A few other visual changes were also introduced in this set with the mega-evolution Pokémon inheriting the black-and-yellow “ex” style used previously in XY sets and the full art Mega- Pokémon ex featuring the silhouette of the standard form behind the evolved form.
In addition, the golden rarity on this set has been completely updated to create the “Mega Ultra Rare”. Previously, the golden rarity cards were less valuable than their Special Illustration rare version mostly because they shared the same artwork. Starting from this set, the MUR cards will still be golden but they will now have their very own artwork making them completely unique cards. This change combined with their rarity, contributed in making these cards the most valuable ones in the Japanese sets and we can expect to see the same trend in the Mega Evolutions English set.
Among the products that will be available for the set we will have the usual Booster Packs & Blisters (including a checklane version), Booster Bundles, Build & Battle Box and Elite Trainer Boxes featuring Riolu or Alakazam promo cards. Booster Boxes will also be available in both a standard and an enhanced version featuring a Bulbasaur-stamped box topper promo.
To please the Collectors, 4 and 9-Pocket Portfolios and “Mega Heroes” Mini Tins will also be available. These last ones will be displaying the amazing artwork of the set and will come with two Booster Packs, one Collectible Coin and one Art Card.
Notable Pokémon and chase cards
Even if Pokémon Mega Evolutions has not been released yet, we can have a glimpse on which cards will be the ones to look for in the set by looking at the market trends for Japan's Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia.
The two more expensive cards from these sets are, not surprisingly, Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex with this last one topping the charts among them. The value of these cards is driven first by them being the very first two "Mega Ultra Rare" (MUR) gold cards based on very iconic Pokémons. However, in this case both cards are also quite interesting from a gameplay point of view.
As expected, Mega Lucario ex is a Fighting type that excels in attacking. Its first attack “Aura Jab”, deals 130 damage for just one energy and allows the Player to bring up to three Basic Fighting Energy from their discard and attach them to their Benched Pokémon. Mega Lucario can then attack next round for 270 damage using “Mega Brave” and eventually retreat leaving any of the now-fully charged benched Pokémon taking the lead of the attack.
On the other hand, Mega Gardevoir ex excels in dealing Psychic damages. Similar to Mega Lucario, its first attack “Overflowing Wishes” allows the player to attach a Basic Psychic Energy from the deck to each of their Benched Pokémon. This setup enables your Mega Pokémon to unleash its devastating “Mega Symphonia” attack that deals 50 damages for each Psychic Energy attached to a Player's Pokémon.
Among the Special Illustration Rare, Lillie's Determination is definitely one of the best cards you can pull. Lillie can find its space in any competitive deck as a powerful card Draw engine as she allows the Player to shuffle their hand into the deck in order to draw 6 cards. In the early phase of the game, and if the player still has 6 Prize cards remaining, playing Lillie will actually allow them to draw 8 cards instead, refreshing a bad initial hand and also providing a strong card advantage. Determination functions as an early game draw engine. Lillie is also a strong and popular female character and she is represented here in a style that brings back memories from her Sun&Moon era.
What to expect from the new Mega Evolution set
With Scarlet&Violet era now officially ending, there is clearly a lot of excitement and expectation for the very first set of the next phase in Pokémon TCG. Together with bringing new mechanics to the game, Mega Evolution will also bring a lot of interesting changes to the collectability of the Pokémon cards with the introduction of the Mega Ultra Rare rarity tier and full art Item cards. As such we should expect this set to hold its value among both collectors and players alike and to be in high demand.
As usual, our personal recommendation is to keep an eye on the pre-order page on Magic Madhouse to make sure you can benefit from the early offers and the free shipments but if you missed out, make sure you enrol to be notified when this set is back in stock. Another aspect to consider is to look for singles cards on the website, in particular if you are looking to finalize your deck on time for any event. Magic Madhouse not only offers a large selection of singles but it also guarantees a quick and very safe shipment. This last aspect is not negligible considering there is nothing more disappointing than getting your cards lost in the mail or for them to arrive damaged.
