Whispers in the Well Disney Lorcana Set: Card List, Themes & Highlights

Following on from Disney Lorcana’s monumental Fabled set is no easy task, but Whispers in the Well looks like it may well be up to the job. How do you top the set that introduced set rotation and gave us everything from powerful reprints to the gawrsh-darn Goof Troop? By getting a little bit spooky.

What is Whispers in the Well?

After the glittery storybook vibes of Fabled, this set is taking things in a much more mysterious direction, with a set that combines spooky gothic horror with many of Disney’s most popular characters donning their deer-stalkers and become master sleuths.

On top of a cracking theme, Whispers in the Well is also introducing a brand new type of card, plenty of new alternate arts across the Epic, Enchanted, and Iconic rarities, and the arrival of some hugely requested characters to Lorcana for the very first time.

Theme and Set Overview

As mentioned, this set is much darker in tone than what we’ve seen before. This is definitely no Fabled or Shimmering Skies, as our intrepid detectives face off against some of Disney’s most fearsome faces.

This set marks the debut of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Black Cauldron to Lorcana. While the Headless Horseman and the Horned King terrorise the set, they’re opposed by the likes of Ichabod Crane, Eilonwy, Taran, and more than a few Gurgis to help even things out.

Also joining the fight are perhaps the biggest headliners for Whispers in the Well, the Gargoyles. The whole clan are the latest Disney Channel cartoon to join the game alongside Tailspin and Ducktales, with cards like Elisa Maza, Intrepid Investigator; Bronx, Ferocious Beast; and Goliath; Guardian of Castle Wyvern.

Of course the arrival of the Gargoyles, Black Cauldron, and Sleepy Hollow to Lorcana is exciting, but they’re nothing compared to the other new thing debuting with this set: Whispers.

Whispers are a brand new type of card, representing partially-formed versions of the Glimmers we’ve been playing with up to now. Whispy and ethereal, they feature a new parchment-esque card frame and some of the most stunning art we’ve seen in Lorcana to date. I particularly love Robin Hood, Ephemeral Archer’s almost glitchy appearance, something we’ve never seen before.

Whispers make use of the new boost mechanic, which is an ability you can pay to put a card facedown under the Whisper. It’s quite similar to Xyz summoning in Yu-Gi-Oh!, in that those cards then become resources for your Whispers to use. For instance, Fairy Godmother, Magical Benefactor can banish characters every time you boost, helping you keep the board under control.

Key Cards and Standout Pulls

While the set is full of surprises and powerhouses, there are a few cards that are a whisper above the rest.

Rapunzel, Ready for Adventure proves Rapunzel is still an absolute terror, with her ability to protect characters she supports until your next turn. Use her on your big lore generators, and they can sit safe from any kind of challenge or damage, ready to go again next turn.

Another princess is also making a big splash on the game, with Cinderella, Dream Come True proving to be one of the best cards in the set. It helps pull together Princess decks in a huge way, giving you ramp to your inkwell and card draw simply for plaiyng more Princesses.

Also granting a wild amount of card draw is Hades, Looking for a Deal. This presents a tough choice for your opponent - lose a kye piece by putting it on the bottom of their deck, or let you draw two cards? Either option could be devastating.

Why Are Lorcana Fans Excited?

The arrival of Whispers in Lorcana is already exciting enough, as they offer one of the biggest expansions of the game’s lore we’ve seen since launch. But players are excited for other reasons, too.

For starters, this is the first expansion to launch after the very first set rotation with Fabled. The meta is in a whole new place following that, and it’s anybody’s guess how Whispers in the Well is going to fit in.

The return of Epic and Iconic rares from Fabled is also a big draw. Enchanted rares are great, but the Iconic rares are ridiculouly big pulls worth cracking a few packs for. I didn’t get any in mine, unfortunately, but one day my time will come.

Product Lineup And Release Details

Whispers in the Well is available now, with a full range of boosters, starter decks, and accessories released alongside the set on November 14.

The first, of course, are booster packs. These are the regular way of pulling cards, and you can find just about every card in the set in them if you’re lucky. Alternatively, if you want to just get shuffling up, you could take a look at one of the set’s two starter decks: Sapphire & Steel with Judy Hopps and Robin Hood, or Amber & Emerald with Simba and Magera.

As with other, recent sets, the accessories for Whispers in the Well feature iconic art from older sets. This time around are two playmats - Mickey Mouse, Brave Little Prince from Fabled, and Jasmine, Steady Strategist from Reign of Jafar.

Once one of the most feared cards of all time, and today a favourite among Commander and Cube players, Bitterblossom has cemented itself in Magic’s competitive and casual history. While nothing can top the original dreamy art by Rebecca Guay, this full art version by Lena Richards comes close. The drop came with just one copy of Bitterblossom, but with four unique faerie tokens that form a full art panorama.

Eldraine Wonderland

“Snow falls softly on the enchanting plane of Eldraine. Blanketed in white, this world of tales and adventure feels just a little more magical than before.”

While I’m not the biggest fan of how Secret Lairs currently handle the sale of basic lands-based drops (what are you meant to do with just one copy per basic land type?!), these Eldraine snow-covered lands are stunning, making the fairy tale inspired plane even more enchanting. Take a look at that forest. I only wish they would give you more than just one of every basic – Wizards, please?
