We are in March and that means that Konami will soon release a new set of "Maze" set series. The 2025, “Maze of the Master”, will be the third set of the series that started in 2023 with Maze of Memories and it focuses once again on themes and cards strongly driven by the anime series. It also includes never-seen-before original card and revised themed from past cards that make this sets very interesting from both a nostalgia and collector point of view.

What makes this year Yu-Gi-Oh Maze of the Master quite a unique set is the addition of Quarter-Century Secret Rare cards to its line-up. This not only changes the overall rarity-distribution of this set but it will also likely offer the last chance to get these super rare cards before the celebrations are over. In addition to this, the new Maze set will feature a very interesting range of Archetypes including Trickstars, Galaxy-Eyes and Performage. There will also be a new Egyptian and Trap Monster cards inspired by Odion's Battle City Deck as well Collector's Rare version of nostalgic cards from the same anime series like Yugi's “Silent Magician LV8”. Overall, plenty of interesting cards for both collectors and players but let's have a deeper look at what we know so far.
Overview of Yu-Gi-Oh! Maze of the Master Set
Maze of the Master is set to release on the 14th of March and it will include cards featured in the OCG booster sets “Animation Chronicle 2024” and “Duelist Pack: Duelists of Brilliance” for a total of 112 cards. In terms of rarity-distribution, there will be 2 Quarter Century Secret Rares, 6 Secret Rares, 13 Ultra Rares, 21 Super Rares, and 70 Rares. In addition, 16 of cards will also be available as Collector’s Rares. Each Booster Pack will contain 7 cards of which six will be Rare cards and 1 will be a Foil card of higher rarity.
As shown on the official Konami website, the set will include:
10 new Egyptian and Trap Monster-themed cards inspired by Odion’s Battle City Deck!
7 new cards inspired by Mizar’s “Galaxy”/”Tachyon” Deck from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL!
7 new cards inspired by Kaiba’s X-Y-Z monsters from Battle City, and used again by Chazz in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX!
7 new “Trickstar” cards inspired by Blue Angel’s Deck from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS!
7 new “Performage” monsters from Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V!
Key Cards and New Themes in Maze of the Master
The first new set of cards of Maze of the Master is Odion's Battle City deck. This deck comprises 10 new cards not yet released in the OCG and therefore they will all be World Premieres for this set. If you have seen Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle City arc you may remember the match between Joey and Odion which started with the Rare Hunter activating the "Temple of the Kings". This card's ability reduced the number of magic cards Joey was able to play every turn while allowing Odion's Trap cards to be activated the turn they were played.
“The structure behind me is the ancient Temple of the Kings. Within this five-thousand year old sanctuary lies the greatest treasures of the Kings of Egypt!”. Considering these premises, it makes sense this new theme includes some amazing Egyptian-themed artwork like “Embodiment of Apophis”, “Mystical Beast of Serket” and, of course, “Temple of the Kings”. There is also a quite-impressive giant Anubis artwork on the website and I cannot wait to see the related cards. As per the anime, Odion's new deck will likely offer a strong synergy with Trap Monsters and related Archetypes thus it is quite possible it may offer some good strategies using some recently released cards.
The second interesting theme featured in this set will be Trickstars. This Archetype did quite well last year on the competitive scene and it is quite interesting as we will see more support coming in Maze of the Master. Among the new cards, it is worth mentioning “Trickstar Aqua Angel”, a 0 ATK/0 DEF Effect Monster that can be special summoned from hand or Graveyard if you control another Trickstar Monster and that allows a player to look at the opponent's hand and set cards when it is sent to the graveyard as a Link Material. The effect of the new “Trickstar Hoody” also triggers when it is used as Link Material but this time it will help the player to fish out either “Trickstar Fusion” or the new “Trickstar Diffusion” from the deck. There are also two new Link Monsters, “Trickstar Noble Angel” and “Trickstar Colchica” that will prove quite handy to boost Trickstars Extra Deck and improve the efficacy of this Archetype.
“Performage” is the third most interesting Archetype we spotted in the set so far. This Archetype was quite relevant a few years back when Pendulum Monsters were dominant in the Yu-Gi-Oh! metagame. Maze of the Master features seven new Performage monsters that is not only quite a boost for this Archetype but it also brings some very interesting cards to the line-up. Among them, it is worth pointing out “Performage Fire Dancer” that is a good starter for your combos as it can find other Performages directly from the deck, and “Performage Water Dancer” that looks for a “Polymerization” card in the Deck or the Graveyard if it is Pendulum Summoned.
The set also features the very convenient Quick-Play Spell Card “Rank-Up-Magic Magical Force” that can be used together with a Lv4 Spellcaster Xyz Monster from the GY to Xyz Summon a Lv5 Spellcaster Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck. And of course there are two new Xyz Monsters, “Performage Trapeze High Magician” and “Performage Shadow Maker”, that can be very good targets for this Spell card.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Maze of the Master – Collectible and Competitive value
Although we only know a very small portion of the cards featured in Maze of the Master, I think this set will prove to be a surprisingly interesting mix of anime-original cards and new support cards to existing Archetypes. It is hard to judge the competitive value of the set as for now but the new support for Trickstars and Performance among the other themes seems a good sign this set will be more than just Nostalgia-driven cards. I am also quite interested to see if Odion's cards will be as strong as the Egyptian monsters from the Ishizu's deck released in the “Magnificent Mavens” set in 2022 or they will just be very thematic.
On the other hand, the anime-themed cards look quite fun to play and they will likely be interesting for collectors and fans of the original series. I would expect the collectible value of the set to also be good considering Maze of the Master is likely the last remaining chance to get Quarter Century Secret Rares and it will includes the World Premiere theme focuses around Odion that may be worth to have as least for collectible purposes.
Overall, I think keeping an eye out for this set will be quite important and I would suggest to consider pre-ordering Maze of the Master. Magic Madhouse is as usual a good option to consider for sourcing your Booster boxes due to the 30% discount on RRP and the free shipping on release day. On the other hand, if you are completely sure this set is right for you or if you mainly looking to get the cards you need for your decks, you should always check the web site for singles as Magic Madhouse usually has a good range of them right on release. And, most important, they will always be genuine cards, so you will not risk to be struck by lighting as Odion when he played the fake “Winged Dragon of Ra” sneaked by Marik into his deck during the quarter finals.....
