Maze of Muertos - What Is It?

Back in 2025, the Yu-Gi-Oh! set Maze of the Master was released, with a focus on the cards used by the character Odion in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. A year later, and we’re returning to the labyrinth with Maze of Muertos, a zombie themed expansion filled with undead abominations, and cards used by the character Bonz.

The expansion will also feature a sinister new form of Kuriboh, a new Dark Magician fusion monster, a return to the Waking the Dragon arc with a new Timeus card, and a selection of other new cards drawn from a variety of other popular anime archetypes. There will also be a selection of relevant reprints from recent sets.

Maze of Muertos is currently available to order, having been released on the 19th of February. Let’s break this expansion down and talk about what we know so far.

What’s Inside - Early Content & Themes

Much of the information that we currently have on the set comes from the official product announcement. This announcement takes the form of a dialogue between a “brave duelist” and Pumpking the King of Ghosts, the mascot of the set, who is finally getting a retrain after his release in the set Metal Raiders in the early 2000s.

While the announcement doesn’t formally reveal any cards, it shows off their artwork and describes their effects. They are all themed around synergising with the classic graveyard revival card Call of the Haunted.

The currently unnamed Pumpking retrain is a level 6 zombie monster. It can be discarded to set a copy of Call of the Haunted from the deck, and enable it to activate immediately. It also special summons another level 6 zombie from the deck when it is special summoned to play.

The combo here is to discard Pumpking, then to revive him with the copy of Call of the Haunted that he fetches. You are then able to XYZ summon with him using the level 6 zombie that he brings out. This will allow you to play…

Pumpking’s new, also currently unnamed, upgraded XYZ form. This card both protects zombies on the field from destruction and grabs either a Call of the Haunted or any card that mentions it from the deck, letting a duellist using this card assemble their gameplan.

There’s also a new archetypal field spell that grabs three copies of Call of the Haunted from the deck when it is played, and allows Call of the Haunted to remove opposing monsters, as well as reviving the controller’s own when it’s activated. This cryptic cavern, like many archetypal field spells, holds the strategy of the other cards it works with together and provides a power up to Call of the Haunted, the central card of this deck.

Finally, there’s Ectoplasmic Fortification, which both increases the attack points of zombie monsters, and draws a card for every copy of Call of the Haunted on its controller’s side of the field. This promises to be a useful support piece that will keep the archetype supplied with fresh cards.

Nostalgia focused sets that shine the spotlight on old favourites are always a great way of revitalising the game, in this case quite literally given the focus on zombies. Call of the Haunted and Pumpking are classic cards from the game’s early days that are now going to have another shot at being competitively viable again.

As well as all of these pumpkin zombie cards, we’re also getting some new cards that have currently only been released in Japan. These include Darkuriboh, Chronicle Sorceress, and Uzuhime the Manifested Mikanko.

The card Illusion Gate will also be coming out. This was the signature spell of the character Camula in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime. Camula ran a vampire deck, showing that zombies won’t be the only creatures of the night featured in Maze of Muertos.

What to Watch Out For – Information about Maze of Muertos packs

Maze of Muertos cards can be purchased as two different sealed products.

Every Maze of Muertos pack contains 7 cards. Of these six are rares, and one is a foil card that can come in a variety of different shiny treatments. Picking up one of these is the most affordable way of engaging with the set and grabbing yourself some zombie pumpkin cards.

A maze of Muertos booster box contains 24 packs. This means that you’ll get a total of 168 cards once you’ve opened up everything the box has to offer. That’s a wide selection of different cards that will fill your collection with the power of the undead.

Once the set releases, singles from it will also be available to order from Magic Madhouse.

Conclusion - Maze of Muertos brings a spooky Halloween surprise

From Pumpking, to Darkuriboh, to the focus on Call of the Haunted, Maze of Muertos is unearthing an awful lot of ghoulish gameplans and spooky strategies. With its mid-February release still looming like a spectre on the horizon, this is one set that you won’t want to miss if you’re a fan of zombies, or you’d just like to see some beloved old archetypes given a second chance at life.
