The 3-inch mortars of a battalion's mortar platoon gave them immediate artillery support. The mortars were excellent for softening up the enemy before an assault or for knocking out enemy machine-gun nests. The SBML (smooth-bore muzzleloading) 2-inch mortar conducted overhead fire, throwing a 1kg (2lb) high-explosive bomb in an arcing trajectory down onto the heads of the enemy, making it excellent at knocking out dug-in enemy troops.
