When the heavy guns of the Red Army artillery batteries were otherwise occupied, it was useful for the infantry to have their own indirect-fire weapons. The 82mm and 120mm Mortars could be just as good as the larger guns at digging infantry out of cover. Soviet mortars had built-in wheels, so they could move quickly to keep up with the infantry they were supporting.
