First born in the Nine Worlds long before the gods, Ymir is the ancestor of the giants. His brutality led the gods to throw him into the Ginnungagap Gulf from which life had sprouted. With his blood, the gods drowned the giants and created the oceans; from his body they made the land of men, Midgard.
