The Four Star Trek Commander Decks
While we don’t yet know much about the MTG Star Trek commander decks, we do know deck names, colours, and topline themes. The new decks are Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, We Are the Borg, and each comes in a Standard edition, and a Collector’s Edition version. Now let's look at what we know about each deck.
Federation Fleet
Federation Fleet is a Blue, Red, White deck that tells us it's about ‘seeking out card draw’ and ‘charging up space craft’. With captain Jean-Luc Picard on the box, it’s fair to say that this is a ‘good guy’ Federation deck, loaded with space craft. As well as the card draw theme, I’d expect to see an artifact theme here too. If you like artifacts, controlling strategy and drawing cards, this is likely one for you.
Landing Party
Landing Party is a Green, White, Blue deck that it seems clear is building on the ‘lander’ mechanic from Edge of Eternities. The deck says ‘strange new worlds’ and ‘trigger landfall’, so it’s clearly ‘lands matter’, led by Spock. So expect lots of ramp, landfall triggers, and big splashy spells.
Klingon Fury
I could have guessed the Klingons would be Mardu, and so it is! This Black, White, Red deck is clearly the aggressive option, with the deck saying ‘hit the whole battlefield’, clearly allowing you to amplify damage across players somehow. There’s a Klingon on the cover who leads the deck, I’d guess Worf!
We Are the Borg
The deck that intrigues me the most, We Are the Borg is an Esper deck (Blue, White, Black) that says ‘grow your ranks’ and ‘assimilate your enemy’. I’d imagine this focuses both on token making, but also likely making tokens of your opponents’ creatures, bringing in the flavour of the borg taking people over. It’s led by the Borg Queen.
