Rarity Breakdown and Set Completion Tracker

As usual with Magic: The Gathering sets, MTG The Hobbit contains commons, uncommons, rares and mythic rares, but there are also many exciting treatments for collectors and fans of Middle-earth.

As well as borderless cards, there are showcase cards and premium treatments in the form of a ‘gleaming gold’ version of Smaug the Magnificent, foil classic artist cards, five very special cards that have been translated into dwarvish, and stunning book cover cards which, you guessed it, look like the covers of books! There are also 25 dragon hoard frame cards, inspired by the mighty Smaug.

And great news, The One Ring is being reprinted as part of Tales of Middle-earth borderless art reprints found in Collector packs.

To round off, as well as full-art middle-earth journey lands, there are also four special full-art season Hobbit basic lands, each showing a plains in a different season.

Chase Cards and Collector Highlights

There’s so much to get excited about with the MTG The Hobbit cards, with plenty of chase cards and collector highlights, based on the character popularity, rarity, artwork, treatment, and gameplay appeal.

Let’s take a look at which cards may become collector targets.

Table: Potential Chase Card Shortlist

Card

Why It Matters

Collector / Player Appeal

Smaug the Magnificent

Iconic. One of the most popular characters in the story, and most loved creature type in the game. Likely to be a player cross-format, namely Standard and Commander. Headliner treatment is THE card to open

Collector / Commander / Display / Standard

The Arkenstone

A key artifact in the story, and an all-star in Commander

Collector / Commander / Display

My Precious

While perhaps not as potent as The One Ring, it’s an icon of the story and powerful in both aristocrats decks and any Commander deck looking to protect the Commander creature

Collector / Commander / Display / Standard

mtg the hobbit set list - A hand holding a glowing orb with radiant energy.

Commander and Casual Play Standouts

What’s great about MTG The Hobbit is that there’s so many cards for all kinds of players and formats, whether you’re into Commander, Standard or kitchen table play. From mighty legends, to support for popular mechanics like treasures, or typal favourites like Dwarf or Dragon, even Smaug himself would be pleased with all these goodies.

  • Best for Commander – Loads of good options, but I’m going for Gleaming Splendor. It’s a treasure generator for whenever an opponent draws their second card, providing plenty of ramp, while also enabling you and an opponent to draw cards, giving you both a draw engine and a bargaining tool. Plus it looks awesome, which really is the most important aspect of a Commander card!
  • Best for Tolkien flavour decks – Two words: My Precious. Possibly the most iconic phrase from the books and the focal point of the entire story.
  • Best for Treasure strategies – I'm going for The Sackville-Bagginses, giving you a treasure on the way in but also a potential game-ending ‘aristocreats’ ability
  • Best for Dragon collectors – there’s only one option: Smaug!
  • Best for Dwarf decks – it’s hard to look beyond An Unexpected Party, providing both an ‘X’ spell for creating dwarves and a +2/+2 glorious anthem effect, all on one adventure card
