The Pokémon TCG is preparing something big for its 30th anniversary

Posted by Magic Madhouse on 27th Feb 2026

February 27th, 2026, was, Pokémon Day, a special occasion to commemorate the anniversary of the series. Specifically, its 30th anniversary, as Pokémon Red and Green were released in Japan on the 27th of February 1996.

We saw a whole slew of Pokémon updates, including new features that will be included in the upcoming Pokémon Pokopia, the announcement of a Switch 2 port of Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness, and even the starter Pokémon from the upcoming generation 10 games.

It's not just digital Pokémon games that are getting new content, though. The Pokémon TCG launched in Japan in October 1996, making this year the 30th anniversary of the card game, as well as the mainline games. The Pokémon Company used the Pokémon Day livestream to tease a mysterious upcoming release.

Last Modified May-14-2026

In short: During Pokémon Day on 27 February 2026, The Pokémon Company teased a mysterious new Pokémon TCG release planned for a worldwide simultaneous launch later in 2026. The teaser marks the 30th anniversary of both the mainline Pokémon games (Red and Green, Japan 1996) and the Pokémon TCG (launched October 1996).

What was shown in the teaser:

  • Iconic cards flashed across the screen including Pikachu and Zekrom GX, Arceus VSTAR, and the Base Set Charizard.
  • Text in multiple languages, signalling the worldwide focus.
  • No title was revealed, only the closing line "the future awaits."

The Pokémon Day livestream also included updates for Pokémon Pokopia, a Switch 2 port of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and the starter Pokémon for the upcoming Generation 10 games.

The Pokémon Day trailer

Four Pokémon cards shown off on Pokémon Day.

The trailer for the, currently untitled, new TCG release lasted only for a handful of seconds. In that brief glimpse, it provided plenty to get excited about, though.

Several Pokémon charged across the screen before transforming into iconic cards featuring text in a variety of languages.

We saw Pikachu and Zekrom GX, Arceus V Star, and even Base Set Charizard. It seems like The Pokémon Company sought out the most hyped up cards that they could imagine and then slammed them all together in a massive nostalgic explosion.

The trailer concluded with the text: "the future awaits" splaying across the screen, without revealing the title of the product, or project, that it was advertising, adding a touch of the unknown to this dramatic announcement.

Whatever this new product is, the trailer announced it will be launching worldwide in a simultaneous release later on in 2026. This means that everyone will be able to get collecting at the same time.
